I did Girl Scouts for five years.One of my best friends is in tenth grade and still doing it—that’s more than half of her life she’s spent in the program.In light of recent news regarding the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts have also come a bit into the spotlight.Now, a brief note. I really, really, really try not to call other people out on their answers. Most of the time they’re expressing opinions, and it’s not my place nor is it necessary to argue with them.Today I stumbled upon an answer written by a relatively popular Quoran regarding Girl Scouts.A core claim they made was that Boy Scouts taught life-lessons, Girl Scouts is just a lazy hangout.I’m sorry. What?I can speak from my own experience and that of countless friends all attending different schools.Girl Scouts might have been laid back, but it generally is an amazing program.In five years, I wrote skits. I planted trees. I volunteered. I looked at history. I camped out. I learned survival skills. I spent time with friends laughing and swimming and hiking. I solved challenges. I sold cookies. I wrote stories. I attended workshops.Girl Scouts is not meant to be Boy Scouts, but that doesn’t make it any less valid.Later on in the answer, it roughly said that in Boy Scouts you do a project which has a lasting impact on the community. For Girl Scouts, you do three Journeys to get your Gold Award. Two pertain to how women are oppressed. The third regarded organic food.A good friend of mine spent hours organizing a tutoring program for a less privileged school. She interviewed people. She wrote up a plan. She would spend her after school evenings helping kids with their homework.I asked a few people and did a brief Google search for verification.As it would turn out, most of the Journeys have nothing to do with what was mentioned.A common misconception about Girl Scouts is that it focuses primarily on things that are traditionally feminine.Tell me these badges don’t seem like great things for young girls to strive for.Girl Scouts are not Boy Scouts. They were never intended to be.They are their own unique program with their own unique flaws.

As a Girl Scout, let me tell you right now:Being a Girl Scout is a hit or miss.If you can’t find a troop that has the same interests? Sucks. Guess you can’t be a Girl Scout.Did the troop leader step down, and nobody wanted to take her place (and, let’s be honest, who would blame them. Tiger moms make the life a living Hell)? That stinks. But what can you do? Guess the troop is disbanding.Did everyone in your troop lose interest to do anything, so you are left doing nothing along with them? Really, really sucks. Go find something else to do.In Boy Scouts there’s a regime. There’s a drive to do things. There’s motivation for the children and parents alike.You can’t find that in Girl Scouts. It sucks, but you can’t.In Girl Scouts you need to do “Journeys” to get your Gold Award, and two out of the three of those Journeys are about feminism and how oppressed women are. The last one is about organic food.In Boy Scouts you do a project that has a lasting impact on the community.One teaches life lessons.One is just lazy get-together most of the time.It sucks that this is the truth, but it is. I can’t blame a girl for wanting to be a Boy Scout instead.If Girl Scouts wanted girls to go to their program instead, maybe they should actually make a functional program.But until then, let the girl choose.I know what my choice would be.

I was 12 years old when my brother was born, in December 1954. Dad woke me up at 6:30 AM, saying, “your Mother had the baby last night. It’s a boy and we’re naming him R_______. Make me breakfast.”Dad was European-born and very old-fashioned. Cooking was women’s work, but the only woman in the house was my 9 year old sister. Perhaps he thought that since I was a Boy Scout, somehow I knew how to cook.Well, the oatmeal was burned and the coffee like colored water, but he ate and drank and left. Not a half-hour later my Grandma was there, to take care of all of us until Mom came home with the baby. My aunts also came by with casseroles and other food for us.And during that week, after we came home from school and did our homework, she gave us our first lessons in cooking. That was a looooooong time ago, but we both are pretty fair cooks by now.That was the common pattern. Families lived closer to each other (I could walk to all my aunts and uncles’ homes) and we all pitched in to help each other.
