What incidents in India have brought true national shame?

First let’s understand this dance tradition, an art form which has been nurtured for more than a millennium. One which occupies almost all the sculptures of the South Indian Temples. One which is considered the mother of all Indian classical dances, The Bharatanatyam. The dance has traditionally been a form of an interpretive narration of mythical legends usually from the ancient vedic scriptures. With body language, postures, musical notes, the tones of the vocalist, aesthetics combined with spectacular footwork and a sophisticated vocabulary of sign language based on gestures of hands(the Mudras), eyes, and face muscles(the Navarasa) the artist gives life to the underlying narrative(the Abhinaya). The art is elegant, sophisticated and it takes years of training to master. If time permits watch this elegant performance. Now the context has been set lets jump into the answer. On March 2017, Aishwarya R Dhanush, daughter of actor Super Star Rajinikanth and UN ambassador for gender equality in India, performed Bharatanatyam at the UN on the occasion of International Women’s Day representing India. Let me repeat it, at the United Nations representing India. It created a lot of hype among the media as she was the first ever person to perform Bharatanatyam at the UN headquarters.Even if the time does not permit watch her performance:(This was the only video I could find on actual performance so ignore the thumbnail)The performance was very bad, even famous dancers like Anita Ratnam, in fact, called her performance the ‘pathetic state of Bharatanatyam at the UN’. There was no footwork, no Mudras, not even one from the Navarasa. She was just jumping on the floor by wavering her handsPost the performance the internet was flooded with trolls and memes, the whole world was laughing. It was a national shame to India. A big humiliation and a direct insult to this prestigious art and to the artists not only in India but all around the globe.India could have recognized any of the renowned artists to perform at this honorable event instead it was Aishwarya Dhanush who took the stage. This also reflects on the effort taken by the government in the department of arts and its respect towards its own culture. India is a land of culture and if Aishwarya Dhanush had respected that she would have stepped down. Instead she did … this.Sources:Bharatanatyam - WikipediaAishwarya Dhanush performs Bharatanatyam at the UN, but not all are impressed
