PDF Editor FAQ
How late is too late to have children?
So, how old is too old to start having children? Here is the answer…Falling fertility: A woman’s ability to get pregnant begins to decrease slightly at age 27, and then decreases significantly after the age of 37. The average healthy couple under the age of 30 has about 95% of conceiving within a year. Once you’re over 30, the chance of getting pregnant decreases by about 3% each year. After 40, the chance of conception drops to 5-10%, and by age 45, the chance plummets to less than 5%. Of course, these are the general statistics – there are always outliers. In the last week, I met with a 25-year-old struggling with infertility and a 46-year-old who found herself unexpectedly pregnant despite contraception.Rising risk: As age increases, so does the risk of miscarriage and pregnancy complications. While the rate of early pregnancy loss is around 15-20% for women under 30, it begins to increase at the age of 35, and by age 40, the miscarriage rate is 40-50%. The risk of a baby having Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities is also directly related to the level of “maturity” of the mother. The risk rises gradually with age, until age 35, and then the risk increases more rapidly. At age 35, the risk of Down syndrome is 1/350 – but by 45, the risk approaches 1/35. We also see a slight increased incidence of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, C-section, and stillbirth in moms over the age 40, so additional ultrasounds and testing are often ordered in older moms. How much does being healthy help? My patients often assume that if they are super healthy, that will counteract the effects of aging. Sadly, your ovaries do not care if you are a vegan, gluten-free marathoner. Each woman is born with a finite number of eggs – and with age, both the number and quality of these eggs decreases. Obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes can further impede your ability to get pregnant, increase the risk of miscarriage and cause complications during the pregnancy itself. Staying healthy is important to maximize your chances of conceiving and help you have a healthier pregnancy, but diet and exercise alone cannot fully overcome the effects of aging on the ovary. You may be wondering – if these numbers are all doom and gloom, why does it seem like there are so many fabulous forty-somethings with babies at the playground? While a ten percent chance per year of conceiving seems low, there is a significant portion of the population in their forties, so there are still a lot of women getting pregnant and having normal healthy pregnancies in their forties. Another consideration is that a majority of women undergoing fertility treatments over the age of 40 use eggs from a younger ovary (egg donors). All the fertility and complication rates I painfully quoted before were tied to the age of the eggs, so if younger eggs were used then odds of healthy pregnancy go up significantly. This is performed through in vitro fertilization (IVF), which can be an expensive and exhausting process.Medically, the perfect time to have a baby is between ages 20-24. But emotionally, financially, and relationship-wise, for many of us, the perfect time is likely much later in life. Dr. Christopher Montville, Practice Director of the Tennessee Fertility Institute, says, “Ideally, a couple should plan on starting their family before the female partner reaches the age of 37. That helps improve their chances that they will have at least one healthy baby before age-related changes in fertility makes starting a family more difficult” – but sometimes that doesn’t happen. When looking for alternate options, if you find yourself at 35 with no “Mr. Right” in the picture, he recommends considering freezing your eggs to improve your chances of future fertility. If you are trying to conceive over the age of 35, you should seek medical attention if not pregnant in 6 months of actively trying. While many women in their late 30′s and early 40′s have normal healthy pregnancies, many others experience struggles, heartbreak, and loss. Having a baby in your mid 40’s is possible, but often requires expensive fertility treatments and is not without risks. As you plan your future, know that there is no perfect time to get pregnant, but if having a baby is important to you, than the earlier you start your family the better. Thanks for reading. And please, remember to follow me.
What are common scams in India?
Writing anonymously for obvious reasons. According to me, IVF clinics spread all over Delhi and NCR (In Gurgaon, they are present at every corner) are biggest scammers. Believe me, none is best as against the frequent claim they make to play with emotions of childless couples. Having a child purely depends on your luck and if the god has written your destiny that you will get your child by IVF then blindly go to any clinic and you will get the success. If not, then not even the clinic which claims 90% success can make it happen. Let me share my experience and the scam here: We (me and my wife) were childless for almost 8 years. Though my wife got conceived 3 times but every time she couldn’t carry beyond first scan. We met several doctors in the due course and after doing all sorts of tests,(more)
What is the best IVF clinic center in India?
Believe me, none is best. It all depends on your luck. If the god has written your destiny that you will get your child by IVF then blindly go to any clinic and you will get the success. If not, then not even the clinic which claims 90% success can make it happen. Let me share my experience here:We (me and my wife) were childless for almost 8 years. Though my wife got conceived 3 times but every time she couldn’t carry beyond first scan. We met several doctors in the due course and after doing all sorts of tests, the doctors concluded it as a case of unexplained infertility. Finally we decided to go for IVF and again did a lot of research about the doctors. Finally we zeroed down on Dr Kaberi in GK Delhi. She appeared very kind and caring at the start and gave us all sorts of assurance that chances are quite high since my wife has perfect readings (from tests conducted before IVF) required to carry baby. The initial cost which she quoted was around 1.3 to 1.4 lakhs and seemed very well in our budget. Hence we started our journey. Following chain of events will tell you that how cost escalates and how you end up behaving like a robot.Even before the cycle was started, we had spend 20K in tests, then based on doctor’s insistence she gave a medication (some IVG drip) to my wife which costed another 20K. Finally the cycle started and we ended up paying almost 60K+ for the injections. The cost of actual IVF procedure was 90K and she gave us a good news that total 9 grade A embroys have conceived and out of which she has implanted 4, so it would be good if we get other 5 freezed for 6 months which will cost 20k. We did that without even thinking. Then there was hell lot of medication and injections which my wife had to take on daily basis for next 14 days which was probably another 15K. Finally after waiting anxiously for 14 days we got the HCG test done which came out positive and we were on could nine. The doctor called us on 3rd/4th day and again asked for IVG drip costing another 20K. The medications kept as it is. However unfortunately after 3/4 days my wife observed some spotting. Worried we called the doctor who didn’t bothered to respond. Probably she got the hint that the case was over. Next day in the afternoon my wife observed the spotting again and this time I called the doctor who somehow picked the call and told me that she can’t deal with such cases over phone, so she asked me to get my wife admitted in a hospital near Nehru Place. There was no choice but to follow instructions. To my surprise neither she or her assistant bothered to visit and see my wife till evening. My wife was observing blood everytime and we were getting anxious that why we are kept as hostages when there is actually no treatment possible. Finally the doctor turned up in the evening and when I blasted all sorts of questions on her, she became impatient and replied very rudely that it is true that patient have choice to select a doctor, but at the same time doctors also have choice to select their patient. So I should not question her expertise. She further suggested that it is too early to go for a ultrasound scan, so let’s wait for atleast a week and till that time my wife could be in hospital on rest. This was absolute non sense and I asked for a middle ground as I can’t see my 10K bleeding everyday as hospital expense. She then suggested that lets do HCG test after 24 hours interval and in case the count is increasing then we should be hopeful. Finally they took first sample in the morning next day and followed by another the day after. All this while there was no medical help provided to her.Much to our dismay the results showed decreasing trend and I requested for discharge immediately. I ended up paying another 30K as the hospital fees where we hardly got any treatment. We still went to meet the doctor who shamelessly asked us to go for another cycle with freezed embroys after a couple of months. So in all I flushed 3 lakhs down the drain and not to mention the huge trauma which my wife underwent and it took her 3/4 months to recover from the incident.Lessons learnt:IVF should be opted only when the couple can’t conceive naturally e.g. extremely low sperm count or blocked tubes, else don’t opt for it.Never trust the doctor and the rosy pictures they show. Be prepared for the worst.Instead of opting for a high end doctor, opt for a doctor who charges reasonable feeNever plan your budget based on initial cost, plan for atleast 50% hike during the course.Doctor will be nice to you only till the things will go smooth, they will show their true colours soon your case goes haywire.Money can’t buy you happiness, it is your destiny.Hope my experience help people who are planning for IVF in future.PS: My wife conceived naturally approx 1 year after the incidence and as of today we are a proud parent of 18 month old lovely and healthy son.
