PDF Editor FAQ

How do you feel when you are turning into someone you are not in this life?

I feel like I’m being picked up and shaken like a sock. This video is by Joe Walsh. It’s one I hold a great value in. From the 1:30 mark it illustrates to me for the next few minutes so much about this life that I find glorious, and sad, and awesome, like my dad. He reminds me of him, Joe Walsh. He always looked like him and his sense of humor was apparent. Today is his memorial in Wichita. I will not be present. If I had a few moments to stand up and say something I’d probably have a hard time holding my emotions in check. His mom died when he was 7. His dad remarried and died when he was 14. His step mom told him he should go. He went out on his own at 14 and became a hellion in a leather jacket and a motorcycle. He told me several versions of a story that basically ended in jail or the service. He chose the Marines. I heard a version of a story where he collected ears on a string he hung from his belt in the jungles of Laos. It was never confirmed or proven false. He was only 16 but lied and said he was 17 and his sister signed the paper to let him enlist. He was already discharged at 19 where he met my mom. Both underage and in a bar.My dad turned 20 years old one month and one week before I was born. Mom was also 20. As I grew up it was always easy to know how old they were. You just add 20. Then when I was 20 and had already been divorced, I understood how young he and mom were. I was put through something after that. Since living on this planet, I’ve always been obsessed with counting back to what dad was doing when I was 25 or 30 or 35 or 40. My dad reached greater heights and was twice the man I ever have been before he was 35. At least as far as the social ladders I saw growing up, he made it to the top for awhile.By 25 my parents had moved to Roseville and were the Kentucky Fried Chicken co-owners/builders/managers of the newest KFC franchise. It was 1967.By the time I was 8, they were 28 and we moved from the apartments we had watched the moon landing from to a house on a dead end street on a new neighborhood of middle class families. In 1970, middle class actually meant something different than it does today. People were able to live well and even save money being in the middle class. We lived in the only two story house on the street. Dad drove the latest new cool car to come out. In those years I remember a 65 Chevrolet Impala we moved here in. Dad said it was the fastest car he ever owned. It was stolen one day (he leaves keys in things) and thrashed. I remember a Mustang and a 442 while still in the apartments. A large Ford truck and a cab-over camper the apartments people let us park in a corner. When we moved to the house it was across the street from the Oldsmobile guy. So, each year dad got a new Olds.I recall a Toronado around 72 (after the 442), It had a personal license plate MARX 4. It was a little stab at his boss Pete Harman who had a MARK lV Cadillac. We always got a new truck every few years, and a newer camper after a while. Our house was the second from the end and beyond the dead end and beyond our back fence was fields and woods and trails and hills that stretched to the foothills in some directions.I was not surprised when I came home from school to find our back fence torn down and saw a big tractor had dug out a swimming pool. We had parties in those days that would be talked about for years. All of the hob-nobs attended. The owner of the phone company was there. My parents had Roseville Telephone stock they had to divide when they divorced later, as well as Harmans/KFC stocks.Wen dad was 34 he owned this Jaguar parked in our drivewayHe saw it sitting out in a field one day. It had the sun roof open, windows down, and had been sitting for years. Bought it and had it towed home. He completely refurbished it himself. Had all the interior leather replaced. Repainted. It was the nicest car I ever sat in. This picture is around 1976 right before we moved away to buy two more KFC’s that fell through.Dad lost his ass with that deal by trying to do business with a man on a handshake. My parents never really recovered as a couple from that but dad started making the best money he ever would make when I was 16. He was 36. They bought a house out by the lake. Our next door neighbor had a tennis court in his back yard. We were about a city block from the boat ramp and they bought a boat. He owned a warehouse in town and his outgoing bills were over $100k when he was 38.I graduated from high school when he was 37 and our state champion basketball team that year got to go around to all of these clubs to have a luncheon and some recognition. We went to the Lion’s Club for lunch and the meeting was chaired by my dad who was the Lion’s Club president that year. Here he is as Year of the Chicken… He was always ‘The Chicken Man’. Next to him, Rudy on the left was the Oldsmobile guy I mentioned, his best friend and neighbor. Rudy was 6′5″. Dad was 6′-2″. Dad always seemed tall to me, but by the team’s Lion’s Club luncheon I was almost 6′-4″ already. Little did I realize I was part of the first generation not to make more money than their parents. When dad and mom split he had an empire, nearly. He’d been going to LA mostly every week and was the number two guy in the company he signed on with when the KFC handshake debacle went down. I was there when he was offered the job…over a handshake. He became the Northern Cal sales rep for QFS Quick Frying Systems. He sold KFC their pressure cookers and started up programs for grocers all over who started to sell their own KFC type of chicken. He did really well, until the secretary there who ran the company and him decided they could run their own company and keep all the money. It may have worked out too if they both didn’t love cocaine so much.Mom was devastated. He had made the decision when she had been back in Utah getting her face scraped. She came home as a surprise to show my dad with scabs all over her face. She’d lost tons of weight before that, too. He asked for a divorce. They were 44 years old. My dad had a really good run up to that point. It’s from this point, looking back, that he began falling. The Lion’s Club friends all turned their back on him except for his closest friends. They all were friends with both of my parents and mom was well-loved. Dad had broken a rule unwritten somewhere. His friend Rudy had lots of money and bought up the warehouse to split and 2 rentals they owned across town and eventually my mom sold the house out at the lake.Dad rented a cool house for very cheap and another excellent office space for his new venture with the secretary. 2 years later that secretary would drive out of town in my dad’s van, towing his boat, and had $15k in cash. Dad tried for several years to rebound on his own. During that time he let his drinking and drugs take him for a long ride. He had no one to tell him he couldn’t. He had no one to be faithful to and no one wanted to play. He became deeper enmeshed in drugs and would eventually marry again to a hooker from Reno, Nevada. Both the secretary and the hooker were my age. The secretary was a few months older and the new step mom was a few month younger. I declined her pleading and begging. I think I was the only person my dad knew who didn’t get his penis into at least her mouth. I liked her though. We were friends, and she was the one who introduced my dad to crank (meth). But, he still liked his coke, and his Zanex, his Valium, his Vicodin, his weed of course, but his drug of choice was Budweiser. When I went to Europe I turned 30. Which means dad had turned 50. By the time I came home after 11 months the step mom had already gone with a lot. He’d had a sexual romp with his best friends daughter and the next day she told him (her dad-Rudy) to make him mad. It did. Dad got a raised rent notice on both his home and office and had to vacate to a whole new town where he would start seeing flying saucers and little green men. He started hearing voices and before long he was full on insane and had lost everything. He was 56. The age I am now.His last 20 years were spent on disability in Wichita, Kansas. His sister had a free room in her basement until his other sister who worked for the Social Security Department was able to expedite his paperwork and he received enough to buy a trailer to live in. He took medication for his voices and found the doctors gave him a pill that put him, “Right where I want to be”. It was a 20 year long vacation and reflection time for him to rethink of where he had fallen from. We talked every Sunday for a while. I saw him last year. It was hard when we talked about my next visit. He was in a home and unable to walk anymore. I’m not sure why. He figured he was good for maybe another 20 years. It was easier, and less tearful, than to act like we’d never see each other again. There was a period in my 20s that he was the best friend I had. He was the best dad anyone could ever hope to have. All of my friends thought I was so lucky because my dad smoked pot and drank with us. He took us out on the boat while we skipped school. He was a parent who was one of us. He was always, to me, one of us. Whoever we are. Lot’s of cemeteries and old rehab places, and prisons full of us. I’d like to hope I get 20 more years, too.He died April 5th, 2019. He was one month and one week from turning 77. He always kissed me on the lips hello and goodbye. Up to the last time I would say goodbye we kissed. He always told me how much he loved me. Plenty of love and affection from both of them. He also gave me a proclivity to compulsive addiction. As have I given it to my daughter. It’s the gift that just keeps on taking.RIP dad.
