For us Indian kids born in the 1980s and 90s, the above image of the 'Nirma girl' was a regular feature on our TV sets. The associated ad had a humble simplicity in its appeal; it was different from the idea of a post-1991 India that could be captured in the promotions of Surf Excel or Henko or Ariel. It was the result of an Indian dream that had come true after years of hard work.Karsanbhai Patel hailed from a family of farmers in North Gujarat, and had completed his bachelors in Chemistry. For most of his contemporaries, the job of a lab technician with the state govt. was a good deal. But Karsanbhai had dreamt big, the start of which happened with the sale of detergent powder that was manufactured and packaged in his backyard. This was an after-office business; he was running a one-man company on a bicycle, hawking neighborhoods and selling handmade detergent packets door to door. Priced at a nominal Rs. 3 per kg, which was about one third the price of leading detergents, the venture was an instant success. Karsanbhai branded his detergent soap, Nirma, after the name of his daughter. The man had created an entirely new customer segment in the detergent market.Today, the Nirma group has a consolidated revenue in excess of USD 1 billion, and employs over 15000 people. In 2004, Nirma's detergent approached 800,000 tonnes – one of the largest volumes sold in the world under a single brand. Here’s a little story about disappointment. About betrayal. About anger.This company wasn’t just any tiny company. It was a big hit. They received $120 million in startup investments from companies like Alphabet Inc (The company that owns Google). And they ended in a utter failure.Sounding familiar yet?Here I present the story of - Juicero.Juicer was based on one main idea - the idea of squeezing packets of fruits and vegetables. I’m honestly not sure why anyone would invest into something like this, but ok.The first issue was that their “Juicing” machine sold for $700.Yes, $700.You put a bag into the machine and push a button, and in a couple of minutes you have a cup of fresh-squeezed juice.$700 for this???They later reduced the price to $400, but by that time the company was a dead meme already.Secondly, their juice packets sold for $5–$7. For just one pack of juice. And the expiry date was 8 days.Even worse, each pack had a QR code on it. That you needed to scan and verify with the Internet-connected juicer before it could be used.Not only is this stupidly inconvenient, but this also meant that you couldn’t drink your juice without internet connectivity. Really?The idea is that every week, you’d go buy some packets, and use the machine to make some fresh juice whenever you wanted.That’s not really what happened.Instead, what happened was that some people tried squeezing the juice packets with there hands, and well - the result was identical.Squeezing the bags with your hands works about as well as doing it with the $700 machine.Why’d you even need a machine to squeeze juice in the first place?And then, a breakdown of the machine resulted in the already-obvious. This was a stupidly complicated, $700, piece of absolute rubbish.Shortly after, the company closed, suspending sales of juice packets and the juicer.And there we have it. A company that designed a machine to squeeze juice, that required internet connectivity, costed $700 and was needlessly complicated.
