What are some of the deficiencies in the top socialist economies that have universal healthcare and education? In comparison to the USA?

The "disadvantage" of socialized Healthcare in Germany vs the privatized USA healthcare system is a savings of 940 billion US dollars. The USA private sector implementation of healthcare is deeply flawed with cost overruns and structural inefficiencies. Inflated medical costs are the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the USA but are rare elsewhere in the 1st world.NerdWallet Health Finds Medical Bankruptcy Accounts for Majority of Personal Bankruptcies - NerdWalletThe USA cannot afford the growing inefficiencies of the private sector managing the USA healthcare system as the USA spends and wastes the most money of any other 1st world country by far. Some form of Universal health care is implemented in most 1st world countries for precisely this reason. It is out of a fiscal and moral necessity. The Universal health care movement started in 1883 in Germany. These ideas and functional programs are not new as they have been continuously refined and improved for well over 100 years. The USA private healthcare industry is solely responsible for the endless Fear, uncertainty and doubt to protect their profits by promoting private sector waste and corruption. Universal health care is not new, not risky and is far more efficient than what we have today in the USA.Today Healthcare in Germany scales well providing efficient healthcare services to over 100M people. Every system whether private or public has intrinsic inefficiencies. Healthcare in Germany consumes 11.6% of gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2010. Health care in the United States is far more inefficient and expensive as the USA spends more on health care as percentage of its GDP(17.2%), than any other nation in 2011.If the USA could duplicate the Universal health care in Germany, the USA would save well over (16.77 trillion * (17.2% - 11.6%) = ) 940 billion dollars per year with improve outcomes and access.Health Costs: How the U.S. Compares With Other Countries

What is the general state of women in Kerala? Are women empowered in the society? Can they reach any position of real power? Do they have a strong voice? How safe are women? Are there suggestions to improve the situation?

I have read the other answers, and they have covered a lot of points. I am just adding my first hand perspective; take it with a bowl of salt. :)Before I start with answering, I would like to present some facts about Kerala, w.r.t. to women. The sex ratio in Kerala is the highest. Kerala Population Sex Ratio in Kerala Literacy rate data.Sex Ratio in Kerala is 1084 i.e. for each 1000 male, which is below national average of 940 as per census 2011. In 2001, the sex ratio of female was 1058 per 1000 males in Kerala.Literacy rate in Kerala is 93.91, with males having 96.02 and females having 91.98. Literacy Rate 20113. The state's female employment rate of 22.9 per cent sharply contradicts its hyped records in gender empowerment, according to the 'Economic Review 2009,' released by the state planning board recently. In contrast to 55.9 per cent of rural males and 54.7 per cent urban males employed in Kerala in 2004-05, work participation rate of rural and urban female counterparts were only 25.6 per cent and 20.0 per cent in the same period, it said.Source: Jobs: Kerala lags in women's participation\4. Matriarchal lineage:It is one of the many states which used to have matriarchal lineage, i.e. children bore the name and property of their mothers, as opposed to other cultures, where patriarchal system was prevalent. This was not applicable to all sub communities, but the Nair followed it to a long time. This answer is not about the choicest privileged few who are studying in big institutes, but the toiling women, of a normal household. The general state of women is Kerala is, in one word, satisfactory. There is no discrimination against boy child and girl child, they are let to study and given equal nutrition. <This is not a thing which you can take for granted, in my visits to rural areas, when there was not enough food, the richer products, like milk, etc. were given only to the boy child.> Girls are let to study, till Graduation, or sometimes post graduation, and then married off, either during their course, or just after their completion.1) Are women empowered in the society? Can they reach any position of real power? Do they have a strong voice?Yes and No both. They are empowered, and they are holding positions in a lot of firms. But the number is limited. As can be seen in the data, not many women prefer working. Even if they do, not many in-laws favour working. So much that it is a no-no for marriage. Many people shun working women. This coming from a society where females were given so much respect and freedom in the history is alarming. That being said, in many parts women are empowered. They have formed several self-help groups, known as "Kudumbashree | ", which organizes groups of women, and provide them with small scale industrial opportunities, along with giving back to the society.Even now, there are many families, where women are not supposed to come to the front side of the home/living space, which we call ‘ummaram’, when men are talking. So much for having a voice. They are usually not decision makers, and the families which consult women on important matters were looked down upon.2) The infrastructure and government help for women. E.g.: Health, education etc. Their involvement in the work-force.Government has included various plans and schemes to bring women to the mainstream. Check out Kerala State Women's Development Corporation Ltd. Their involvement in workforce has already been discussed.3) How safe are women. The freedom women enjoy to pursue their dreams. The outlook of men on women.Women are relatively safe, as there is not much life after the night fall. (I am not talking about metros like Kochi or Trivandrum). If women are seen out after night, or hanging out with guys, the society eyes them with contempt. Now men, don't hate me for this, but this is what I have seen and observed, and I am presenting a frank, unbiased view. These are not blanket statements, and I know many people are good and open, but this is the general view.Freedom is there to study, to take up a course. But the career choices of women are mostly B.A/B Sc, coupled with a B. Ed, or likewise, i.e. the women who pursue professional courses are very less. Qualification is high, but people working (due to factors discussed above) are less. Also, the men of the older generation, have this inbuilt thought that women, if they achieve a job and position, will become arrogant, and will ruin the household. They view women as house-wives, and nothing more. If she is allowed to wok, that is to be seen as a privilege, and nothing more. It is very difficult for a girl to pursue what she wants, truly. The families are overprotective. I don’t know many girls who have gone to far off places to study, or make a living, it is just not possible for them. The society hinders the freedom of women, once they complete their course, they are married off. And the dowry issue, don't even get me started on it. Even before completion, they are ricocheted with proposals. I just turned 21 now, and the only sin I have done is I have completed my course. Dang, here comes the swarm of proposals, which I have to evade through, whenever I visit Kerala. The society is very sexually repressed. And add to it a lot of sick men. I have travelled a lot in public transport, and I have experienced, or have seen gropes, or just simple poking. Like really, what do you get out of poking? My grandma is 70+, even she wasn’t spared. The situation is so sad that woman have to carry safety pins, in their hand, always. And Oh, the stares. To summarise, Kerala is a relatively better place for women. There are prejudices, like every society, which is changing, thanks to the developing Techno Park and other cities. There are creeps, but they don’t outnumber the good men. Society has to become more tolerant, and less rigid, and have a broader outlook, which am sure will happen soon.EDIT: Check this out : When education is of no help at all by Arun Chembilath on Women in IndiaThanks for the A2A. :)

India: Do parents really kill baby girls in India?

I am sorry. This is not a lie. Female foeticide, the practice of aborting a child after determining the sex of the baby (illegal in India) does happen and also infanticide, the practice of starving the child to death, or poisoning, or crushing the child with a stone, or some other such means. Is it common? I don't know. Some will say it is under-reported and some will say it is over-represented. If you look at the gender ratio details from 1951 to 2011 for specific states, you may see some stereotypes be corrected and you may have certain ideas reinforced. Here is a link if you'd like to explore further and this is the goddamn census btw, nothing to do with favorable or unfavorable statistics.http://socialjustice.nic.in/pdf/tab27.pdfWhat does emerge is that if India has a skewed gender ratio problem, this has been the case right from the 1950s. In 1951, the gender ratio for females to males was 946: 1000 and in 2011, it was 940:1000. In 1991, possibly when sex determination really started to catch on, the ratio dipped to 927:1000 and in subsequent decades, it went back up, again possibly because the government started to take measures to curb the menace. I say possibly, because it is one explanation for the change. It may be something else entirely, for all we know. Inaccurate census data is also a possibility.Rajasthan has gone from 921 girls per 1000 boys in 1951 to 888 in 2011. Bihar has gone from 990 girls per 1000 boys to 916. Goa, which I haven't heard mentioned in the offenders list (correct me if I'm wrong) has gone from 1128 to 920. Daman and Diu have gone from 1129 to...wait for it...618. SIX HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN. What the hell is going on there I wonder. On the other side, Kerala has gone from 1028 to 1058, Assam from 868 to 958, West Bengal from 865 to 949, and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from 986 to 992.One of the assumed worst offenders (please note that I say assumed), Haryana, has stayed pretty consistent starting very badly at 871 and staying that way at 879.What IS interesting is that the gender ratios (not so much the trends) correlate reasonably with popular perception of how women in these states are treated.I think it is fair to say that instances of female foeticide and infanticide have been recorded because people have been prosecuted and jailed for these offences. Why would the government spend good money on trying to prevent something that doesn't happen? What the influence of this is on gender ratios is, you'd best interpret for yourself from the statistics above. Don't rely on the the extracts; go straight to the source and make up your own mind. Here is a documentary that talks about the practice of female infanticide in South India, which BTW is not infamous for this practice, unlike some North Indian states which are frequently pilloried for this. Please note that if you start screaming at me for saying bad things about Tamil Nadu, I will consider you intellectually challenged and move on. This is just one state in India. Similar things happen in other states as well and I cannot post a video for every state to ensure that everyone gets equally offended. Also note that if you get all prickly and accuse me of making India sound bad, I will point out that you ought to be far more offended that such things happen in India than that such a thing is being discussed. It is GOOD to discuss what's wrong with your society. No acceptance means no change.Tangentially speaking, I frequently see this ridiculous argument that when we discuss India in front of non-Indians, we should avoid bringing up poverty or dowry or female foeticide or anything that makes us look bad. There's even a term for it. Is it poverty tourism? But I ask you, is THAT our priority? How we look to someone outside? Who gives a damn? Worry about what is happening here and how we can fix it.To summarize, are we killing girl children in India as a form of discrimination against the female gender? Yes, we are. Is it prevalent? We don't know. Is it very rare? We don't know. The data is there. Decide for yourself.
