I have written about it before and here’s the story. It’s surreal and beautiful.I met him in Prague. He was doing his PhD in history and true to his subject was very old school.When we met, he bowed down to me and kissed the back of my wrist. Naturally, the first reaction inside me was to be wary! Nonetheless, I decided to trust.We met on the Charles Bridge in the night, after dinner. He brought a bottle of wine to share. The usual part of me, took the wine bottle to see that it was not opened and carefully noted that he opened it in front of me. I waited till he took the first sip, all the while hoping that he didn’t notice my behaviour given that in all likelihood, he was a nice guy.We enjoyed our wine and started walking around the city. We walked on the river trail and I loved the silence and fresh air.After a while, we sat on the bank of Vltava river and spoke about our different lives. He was full of stories about all the places that we had walked around, given that his passion (and subject of PhD) was history.He was curious to know about the history of India, my life as a lawyer here and traveling alone.When it started getting cold, he had an extra jacket. When it started raining a bit, he had an umbrella! The man came all prepared!We spoke about relationships, love, cultural differences, kindness, reading, books, languages and our mutual love for classical music. We also spoke a lot about Prague, a city he loved and wished to move to, and a city that I had come to adore! He was happy to know that I had seen two classical concerts in Prague and was mesmerised. He often frequented the concert hall himself.We spoke about a place he wanted to take me to, but it would have been about 9 km walk in the forest. It was already past midnight and I had a flight to catch at 8 am.We decided to stay by the riverside a while longer and then resume our walk back.The man doesn’t have any presence at all on the internet. He also used a very old fashioned phone without internet. His number now has changed, as he was going to leave Prague for Vienna shortly. He’s moved I am pretty sure. We’ve lost in touch and I have no idea if I will meet him again or not. Chances are, that perhaps I won’t.But speaking to a complete stranger like that, sitting by the river, opening up about my life, trusting him completely, was very surreal and one of the best experiences of my life.
