The 1,000 bed hospital ship Comfort sent to New York has only 3 patients due to draconian restrictions on its use. Was sending it just a publicity stunt?Actually, both Comfort on the East Coast, and Mercy on the West Coast, are ill-conceived ideas, by people who didn’t think it through.You see, these ships are sent into outbreak areas with the premise that they are only going to treat non-infected patients. But how do you make sure these patients are non-infected? By testing? Well, testing lags behind infection. If someone is infected, it could take 14 days before he tests positive. So if you want to set up a medical center in the center of an ongoing epidemic, you have to assume that everyone is infected, and treat him accordingly. There’s basically no way to be sure someone is NOT currently infected, unless this person has been housed in isolation unit for the last 2 or 3 weeks, all by himself, without any possible exposure. How many patients like that are there in New York?OK, then, what if among the patients admitted to these hospital ships, there’s one patient who developed symptoms later? That would be a total disaster! Both ships are mostly trauma centers, because that’s what’s needed by the military. Trauma operating theaters are usually designed with positive pressure ventilation, so that germs can be blown out from the patient to the outside corridor, to reduce the likelihood of post-surgery infection.This is the exact opposite of a Coronavirus treatment center should be. A Coronarivus treatment center is a Negative Pressure Ventilation theater. Outside air can be blown in. Inside air gets sucked down into the filtration tank below. This is exactly what everybody was afraid of. Real life: Guns drawn rarelyMedical show - Doctors and nurses have dramatic or humorous exchanges all of the time, including in front of patients. Real life: The discussions are usually boring and to the point.Cop show - The arrest is Wednesday and the trial is the following Monday (at the latest) Real life: A trial can be anywhere from weeks, to months, to several years after the arrest. The officers may only remember the barest details about the event and they will likely have to consult their notes.Medical show - Obscure diseases are common. Real life: Many doctors might go their entire career without seeing too many unusual illnesses.Cop show - Female detectives wear their hair down and walk around on 4–5 inch heels. Real life - Long hair can get grabbed and you can’t run in heels.Cop show - A rogue cop, who doesn’t play be the rules, gets the job done. Real life: Outside of a police state, such a cop would get fired as he or she is dangerous and is probably breaking the law.Medical show - The hospital has a super doctor who can diagnose anything based upon his or her encyclopedic body of knowledge. Real life: Unless you are at a major medical center in a metropolitan area, you are likely going to have to wait until you get the right diagnosis, especially if you are suffering from something that’s uncommon.Cop show - They read you your Miranda rights when they arrest you. Real life: Unless they want to question you, that isn’t going to happen until you get to the station. And if it’s just a misdemeanor arrest, it may not happen at all.
