After Govind’s death, his memorial is also built nearby[4] .The Last battle1st January, 1818: 129 years later, in the same area, is fought one of the last battles of the 3rd Anglo Maratha War - The Battle of Koregaon-Bhima[5] [6] .It involves the British Forces lead by Captain Francis F. Staunton[7] , and Maratha forces lead by Peshwa Bajirao II.The British forces include Tamils, Punjabis, Englishmen and members of the Mahar Caste. The Peshwa forces include Arabs (Yes sir, Arabs), Gosains (or Goswami) and Marathas[8] .A few historians opine that the battle ends inconclusively[9] [10] . A few others accord the British forces a victory. It should be remembered, that the Third Anglo-Maratha war was finally won by the British.The Obelisk.1st January, 1851: 33 years later, the British decide to mark the last battle of the 3rd Anglo Maratha War, which sealed their hegemony over India, by constructing a memorial Obelisk in Koregaon-Bhima[11] . The memorial also contains the name of the soldiers of the British Contingent, who lost their lives fighting.Babasaheb’s reassertion for Dalit Pride.1st January 1927: 76 years later, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar visits[12] the British War memorial in Koregaon-Bhima and re-narrates this battle, as a war of pride for the ‘Dalits’, who successfully defeated the ‘higher caste’ army of the Peshwa.He also starts the tradition of an annual celebration every 1st of January to comemorate this victory[13] .Notice Board fiasco No. 15th September 2015: 88 years after the first anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Koregaon-Bhima, a notice board explaining the historical importance of Sambhaji’s memorial goes for a repaint - when it is installed back, the reference to Govind Gopal Gaikwad is missing. This leads to altercation between caste groups[14] .Notice Board fiasco No. 229th December, 2017: Two years after that incident, a new notice board is erected near the same memorial of Sambhaji - this time explaining how Govind Gopal Gaikwad was the real hero who dared perform the final rites of Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, despite the threats. This leads to altercation between caste groups as well[15] .The 200th Anniversary1st January 2018: 3 days after the notice board issue, is observed the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon-Bhima. Lots of people who intend to celebrate this incident arrive at the memorial. Lots of people who intend to stop others from celebrating the incident also arrive at the memorial.
