Career Gap can be due to umpteen reasons primarily being voluntary or forced. Whatever it is, a gap is a gap and the longer it is, tougher it is to get into another job due to establish practices in the market.While I will answer this question, I will also answer that“what did I do to overcome my situation?”. This is more important because that’s going to define one’s life ahead. Question asked is mere past.My reason of career gap:Before Sep, 2016 - Back in India, I was successful in my job and was happy with my life. I was sought after by a lot of recruiters with various job offers in my area of expertise (Analytics & Application Development). I was content with what I had and politely repudiated those offers.Oct, 2016 - I planned to immigrate to Australia. I could answer it sometime later that why Australia? That’s not in the boundaries of this question, anyways. Well, neither for career progression nor better lifestyle nor money or whatever comes to your mind. I have my own good set of reasons. This is such an awesome ‘lucky country’. Make sure that every choice you make in life brings you closer to your version of happiness.Jan, 2017 - I lodged the skill independent permanent residency (PR) visa for Australia and at that instance, the Australian visa authority (DIBP) on their website showed the SLA that was stated as ‘decision on 75% of applications in visa subclass 189 is currently taken with-in 2 months and 90% applications are decided with-in 3 months’. Fair enough. I was waiting patiently. Then in March 2017, SLA almost remained the same. Here, when I took the decision of leaving the job. The plan was to leave the job in time, arrange to move in there and settle in the country.May 2017 - I served full notice and was eventually unemployed. Even after 5 months of lodging the visa, I had no visa in my hand and no job. Hey, life is full of surprises. Grace it. Now DIBP upgraded the SLA as 5 months (75% of applications) and 7 months (90% of applications).So ??? Was it a bad decision to leave the job before having a visa? Was it a risky thing to do? Why the hell, I did that? Why I was so impatient? I am stupid.Wait ! Wait !I never denigrated myself or anyone. I never asked myself such question and never let anyone else. I asked myself the questions below. (answer in brackets)What if visa comes in a month?(I can’t sit idle and I shouldn’t, let’s go for some professional certification.)What if visa comes in a quarter or 6 months?(Take membership of a library, do preparation for relevant technical certifications)What else can be done?(Contribute to society, family and friends by means of acquired knowledge)What else?(Spend quality time with your hobbies and family, go on trips)How to keep the money flow?(Freelancing, better managing the saved money and existing investments, partner was working as well)We become what we ask ourselves. You ask right questions and you’ll get right directions. Someone opened a business, it will not fail because he started a business or it will not be successful because he started it. It will fail or reach new heights, whether he stayed positive throughout his journey or not.I took a decision to leave the job. Now, this gap can work for me or against me. I chose to make it work for me.What did I do in my career gap?June 2017 - I figured out that my decision was not the best or most right. But we all do mistakes. We are human and we can’t mend the past but we can definitely work towards making future better. One thing was clear from recent experience with DIBP, that SLAs move and it’s not guaranteed that it will not move further. Visa could come tomorrow or in 2 months or in 6 months.Career Gap is discouraged by recruiters and employers for one of the most important and rightly reason that a person with career gap might lose the sharpness in his acquired skills. Believe me, they are right and that’s how nature works. Did you read the ‘Seven habits of highly effective people’? Habit #7 is Sharpen the Saw. It means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have--you. It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. Career Gap is a mere thing on resume but if you are sitting idle, cribbing, waiting for something to happen then it’s a real gap. Never ever have it. Since the first day of my school, I never sat idle. Initially, my parents didn’t let me sat idle, later it was like oxygen in my blood. In summer vacations, you can always find me in some recreational course, short-term academic course or later during college days, I worked as part-time coach and trainer in institutes.I didn’t searched for job. If I had to work, I must have requested and joined any of my previous employer as I have very good network over there and great relationship with department heads in each of these organisations.However, I didn’t want to bother anyone because of my decisions. I took membership of British Library and started giving the exams to up-skill myself and get certified.- Investment Foundations™ from CFA Institute: I enrolled myself in this financial services industry exam. I am an analyst programmer for the past 9+ years of which 6+ years, I worked in financial services industry. I really wanted to be certified and learn what I didn’t know. The CFA Institute Investment Foundations™ certificate program covers the essentials of finance, ethics, and investment roles, providing a clear understanding of the global investment industry. It’s a 6-months study program, I enrolled it in June and cleared it in a month.- Programming in HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript from Microsoft: I knew all these 3 technologies very well but the exam helped me in learning lots of new features in HTML5 and CSS3 which I was completely unaware of. Successfully cleared this certificate exam as well.——- At this point 7 months since waiting the visa and new SLAs were 9 and 12 months———- Certificate in Quantitative Finance: Let me tell you that I had background in Mathematics (Bachelor Degree), Programming (Masters Degree) and Financial Services (Work Experience). After CFA Institute’s basic certificate, I was ready for this industry acknowledged course. The Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) is an online financial engineering program. It can be completed as a single six month program or split into two three-month levels. It is designed for in-depth training for individuals working in, or intending to move into, e.g. derivatives, IT, quantitative trading, insurance, model validation or risk management. The CQF is unique in its approach and commitment to the field of real-world quantitative finance.- Learned and practiced Python on Hacker Rank - As Python was not only required in CQF course but also is most sought after language in analytics industry as well.- Built a trading system using C# for my father to help him in trading decisions. He is into the business of importing fruits, so developed several other small application for his business in Excel and VBA.- Also, I helped my friend who is owner of an e-commerce business to get some meaningful information from Google Analytics using my technological skills in analytics domain.- Created a web application for PTE exam takers (PTE Score Analyzer by Ashish Jain) which is based on machine learning and helps exam takers in evaluating their scores and understand where they need to improve on to score better next-time.I never lost sight of who I am. A Developer. A Programmer who really loves to solves the problems through means of technology. That’s what I did in my little unwanted career gap.Summary: Career gap was never the decision. I am not a risk taker. My wife didn’t left her job and acted as spine to risk. Risk was hedged to some extent but can never be completely taken-off. I would neither encourage you to take risky situation nor discourage you from taking bold decisions. I would only advise you to stand to your decisions and face your challenges.Current Situation - Jan 2018: Visa was finally granted 12 months after lodgement or say, after 7 months of career gap in resume. Hence, I took break from CQF course i.e. completed only 3 modules out of total 6 and arranged to land in Melbourne, Australia. I am looking for job and pretty optimistic about it.Apr-2018: Finally, I got the job !!
