What good is the navy in modern desert combat?

The first two answers are accurate…as far as they go. The Navy is capable of much more:Patrol the coast to prevent re-supply from foreign nations, prevent inport of food, fuel, arms, vehicles, people, etcPatrol the coast to prevent Exports from leaving the country ( Cripple the nation’s economy )Provide missile strikes anywhere in the country from safe distance, out of view of the enemy installations. ( knock out: radar, weather, military, roads, bridges, communications, etc)Provide early warning cover for ground forces, bombers, and fighter aircraft and rescue helicopters from the carrier.Provide full-range medical ( including surgical options ) for injured soldiers air lifted from the field directly to the carrier.Shore bombardment ( Operation Sea Dragon ) capable of “re-landscaping” entire mountain ranges as desired.Navy Sea Bees ( Construction Battalions ) operate heavy equipment, drive trucks, build roads, bridges buildings, and air fields anywhere. Are contractors drowning under health & safety paperwork?

For project managers, generally, no. Timesheets, daily productivity reports, daily equipment inspections, quality control reports, and schedule reports take the most time. Safety paperwork only gets truly heavy when there's a near-miss or injury or accident, or when Activity Hazard Analyses need to be written for a Site Specific Safety Plan (for federal projects at least.)

A train is about to collide with a lorry and can't stop in time. Should the train try to slow down or will the slower speed make it more likely to derail?

I can only speak from actual experience, and not scientific research or evidence. The last locomotive to vehicle collision I was involved in played out in this manner…I was operating an SD70 locomotive, weighing over 200 tons, with around a 9,000 ton train at 50 mph. A charter bus (comparable in size and weight to a lorry) pulled in front of my train at a road crossing. The collision was eminent, and I chose to apply the emergency brakes before impact.Standard operating procedure is to wait until point of impact to apply the emergency brakes in order for the train to push through the collision, which in most cases is safer for the train crew, due to the increased velocity at point of impact. The train struck the back corner of the large diesel engine equipped motorcoach type of passenger bus at 45 mph. It shoved the bus completely clear of the tracks and tipped it over on its side. Fortunately the bus was empty except the driver, who thankfully only sustained minor injuries. It was the only non fatal train verses vehicle accident of my career. The locomotive did not derail, and only sustained minor damage to the hand rails, and one ditch light, and remained completely operable, and after all the police reports were filed and the equipment inspected, we were able to complete our trip with the slightly damaged locomotive.I have seen the aftermath of another train verses vehicle collision where the train was much lighter consisting of only locomotives and collided with a very heavy 18 wheel semi truck and trailer hauling an equally heavy track type excavator. The locomotives still managed to plow through the collision without derailing, although the lead locomotive was so badly damaged, it was never used again and is just a pile of scrap left abandoned on an old service track. So there you have it, two real life examples of locomotives colliding with large vehicles and not derailed by the collision.
