I was fired from Scholfield GMC in Wichita Kansas.I started my career with the Scholfield auto group with the Honda store, in their oil change center. I was good at what I did and moved up quickly. The General Manager, Roger Scholfield, is an approachable genuine man. He had worked at every level in the dealership prior to taking the GM role.Then there was an opening at their GMC-Pontiac store. It was an opportunity that people wait years for and they offered it to me after 8 months.I took the job and started regretting it in the first week. I inherited a group of techs that were very set in their ways. It took me a few months of holding my own meetings with techs to get them on my side. The parts dept had this us-vs-them attitude vs service that I had not experienced before.To go with this, the General Manager was one of those guys that married into the dealership. And he acted like a child.So in my 5th month, the GM brings me his Yukon with an impossible list of demands on his lunch break on a Friday before he takes a vacation. His lack of planning is now my emergency. So I triaged his list and made an appointment for the rest after his vacation. This was not ok with him. Roger Scholfied would have made an appointment and understood shit happens, this nitwit fired me.I took it rough. In Wichita, there were basically 3 families of dealers. I was fired from one, I knew from news reports I didn't want to work for the second one, and the other was not hiring.I took a full month off and played video games, lived in my basement and got really depressed. I then decided to not be depressed and started looking for friends and a job. I dated a lot of girls off of Match. I found friends through group sites on the internet. But I could not find a job in my long time auto career. I started applying everywhere. And on the day before I flew to WA for Christmas with my family, and to potentially never return to KS, I got a call from a company called Schendel Pest Services. The manager, Tim, begged me to come interview before I left to WA. And I did. I loved the atmosphere, the people and the promise of a livable wage.Tim called me on Christmas Eve to let me know he chose me over his own brother, and whenever I made it back to KS I had a job.A year later and Pontiac and Saturn went away. I dodged a huge bullet getting fired. The job market was flooded with people who were doing my job.I was fine, I was part of a company that posted an increase in revenue through the recession, and trained with the best of the best in my field. That set me up to start my own business when I moved home to WA.
