Hi buddy,Thanks for giving me this opportunity to recall how I improved my English. It may be helpful to many Hindi medium students too.I have been educated in Hindi meduim throughout my academic life. So from school to college, It had been Hindi all around. I realised the actual importance of English language, specially spoken english, while I was doing my graduation.Due to very serious pecuniary problem at home, I had to join a school to teach children while I was in the first year of my graduation.( Believe me or not I was just paid Rs 600 per month in the school, it was situated in my hometown, a small place ).The only source of earning for my family was a small shop of my father but it was closed due to financial issues that year only so I had no option but to help my family anyhow. I had been an average student but I did not want to leave my studies so instead of working as a salesman at any shop ( which was the only probable solution to help my family financially, given my poor academic background), I decided to teach in any school. At first, many schools denied saying they couldn't employ an undergraduate with a poor academic background but ultimately, the management of a school agreed when I told them that I was in a dire need of money but I was paid very less. Meanwhile, I was diagnosed with swollen in my intestine. I had no money even for medicines, I decided that I would have to earn more, 600 per month wasn't just enough for my medicines itself.So in these circumstances, I started giving private tuitions to school children. Luckily, I got some tuitions of English medium students. I took it as a challenge, I used to take their books with me, used to read and understand them thoroughly and teach them the next day. This helped me understand the structure of the language. After some time, I bought a dictionary and started looking for and noting down all the difficult words ( along with their meanings) which I used to find during teaching.Now I started putting serious efforts to have a good command over this language.👉 First, I improved “grammar part”. I studied all the basic grammar rules from my 9th and 10th English Grammar book. Then, I studied “High School Grammar & Composition” by Wren & Martin. This book helped me a lot. Chapters based on Syntax, Synthesis etc proved to be very helpful.👉 Having understood how a sentence was formed, I shifted my focus on “vocabulary part".For it👇1 I started reading newspaper but in a different way. First, I used to read a popular news item in any Hindi daily and then used to read similar news iten in any English daily. This helped me understand English fast and enabled me to understand the meaning and usage of a word in a particular context.( Now this can be done by downloading All India Radio App, same news is given in both English as well as Hindi.)2 I used to note down at least 30-40 words everyday from the newspaper. The next step was to look for the meanings in the dictionary and note them down( Please note down meanings along with sentences, or else It'll be very difficult to learn them by heart. Words with examples help you recall the word easily. eg 👇)Word - Acquiesce(verb )Meaning - to accept or agree to something, often without really wanting to:Usage - The bank acquiesced to an extension of the loan.(If one wants to save herself from the cumbersome process of noting down the words and their meanings, one can read newspaper online on computer or use an I pad and Apple pencil to cut, copy n paste and prepare notes. But it is advisable to make notes in one's own handwriting as involving youself will help you recall the meaning of a particular word easily.)3 Later, I increased the number of the words I used to learn daily up to 50. For revision of these words, I would write them on both of my forearms and palms ( Gazni style 😂, I did not have mobile phone then. I tried keeping a chit in my pocket but I never took it out, out of lethargy so I experimented with this idea of writing on my hand and it worked for me. I would try to recall the meanings of the word and the target would be 50 words daily.)4 Since it was a tedious task, I started reading Fiction, mainly those written in easy language on interesting subjects so that I can read more and more. ( Started with Chetan Bhagat and later moved on to Non fiction .)It improved my speed of reading as I always tried to read fast and improved my vocabulary subconsciously.5 Subsequently, I started reading The Hindu. Initially, it used to happen that after reading the whole editorial, I was not able to understand the essence even then I used to read and try to understand. Gradually, as my vocabulary improved, I started grasping the essence.6 To further improve my speed of reading, I found this book namely “How to read better and faster” by Norman Lewis to be extremely useful. Some of the tecniques discussed such as scanning technique, skipping technique are helpful in order to increase speed of reading.7 To understand the origin and root of the words, another book by Norman Lewis “Word power made easy” was really very helpful. It enabled me to understand the meaning of a word by analysing either the prefix or suffix it had.Eg. Words starting with mis has a negative meaning, mis - bad. So words like misbehave, misogyny, misuse can be understood or guess atleast.8 Moreover, I found “Oxford English Dictionary” and “Oxford Thesaurus” to be exceptionally useful. Thesaurus enriched my vocabulary as it provided synonyms and antonyms of a word.For written English1 Since I had gained the basic understanding of grammar, I started writing my diary in English only. Earlier, it had some mistakes but they kept fading away with time. I did not take any particular help from anywhere. Reading newspapers, books etc enabled me to write, I kept on adding contextual words on my part. i am sure, there are now softwares which can help one find mistakes in her written English.For Spoken EnglishI attended some sessions in a local training center to hone up my skills at Spoken English. It provided me a good atmosphere to converse in English and helped me speak confidently.Peripheral efforts1 Watching Rajya Sabha TV programmes2 Habit of looking for a new word in mobile dictionary3 Reading good books magzines in English on regular basis4 Trying to speak in English as n when getting an opportunityLearning is an evergoing process and those who stop learning, stop moving forward. I am still learning and will keep on learning. On a lighter note, not all of those educated in English Medium can speak Shashi Tharoorian English, even they have to tackle with it. So keeping in mind that a language is not taught it is caught, keep moving forward. U'll master it sooner than later.Hope it helps.
