PDF Editor FAQ

As a truck driver, what happens if you wake up and do your pre-trip inspection and find the seal broken and it was intact the night before?

This is why my company requires heavy padlocks in addition to seals. If I woke up to find a missing seal I wouldn't touch it or move the truck. I would immediately call the company and report it. I don't know what exactly they would do but I presume they would consult the customer, and then with their permission I would be sent somewhere to have the load inspected. The police might be involved in there somewhere, especially if something turned up missing.

Do truckers test their brakes every time they pass a highway sign that says "Trucks Test Brakes"? Do such signs serve a purpose from the truckers’ view?

I do.It takes me 3-5 minutes to stop my truck, another 3-5 to do a 7 point brake inspection, and then a walk around my truck, feeling each wheel, to make sure none of them are excessively hot. And another 3-5 to get back onto the road and up to speed.I drive an average of 600 miles every day, and a lot of things can change in 600 miles, so despite my pre-trip and post-trip inspections, I take that 10-15 minutes to ensure that nothing has changed since I started my day. There may be those who accuse me of being too safe, but I figure 15 minutes is a small price to pay to avoid an accident.Newer equipment and more attention to safety in recent years have reduced the number of brake failures and runaway trucks we see each year, but complacency still leads to a few, many of which could have been prevented by stopping and doing a quick check at the brake check area. I do my best to make sure I’m not one of them.

How many miles can a truck driver legally drive in a 24-hour period?

In a 24 hour period? Technically (in the United States) we can drive for a total of 12.5 hours. It works out like this: From the moment I go on duty I can drive for a maximum of 11 hours, legally. After these hours are spent I must shut down for a minimum of 10 hours before I can go on duty again. But, before I can roll at the beginning of my shift I must do a pre-trip inspection, which typically takes about half an hour. And I must stop for a 30 minute break in the middle of my driving shift.Let’s also assume I don’t have any loading or unloading to do, and that I don’t have to fuel during my driving shift. So, if I were to go on duty at 12:00midnight the total time from the first moment I go on duty to the moment I shut down should total up to about 12 hours, followed by 10 hours of mandatory rest. At 10pm I can go on duty again. But don’t forget, I must perform another pre-trip inspection. So at 10:30pm I can start rolling again, allowing me to squeeze in another 1.5 hours of driving time into this 24 hour period.Total driving time: 12.5 hours
