PDF Editor FAQ

Why do individuals or families (such as the Walton family) need or deserve millions and billions of dollars in personal wealth? Why do we allow and justify this level of wealth accumulation?

I think the reason you may be finding this disturbing, is because of falsely equating "wealth" with "consumption".That is completely understandable. Most people spend most of what they earn, living paycheck to paycheck. The only way they see wealth is as "cash in the bank", or consumption. What they do not often realize, is that the wealth of the top 1% has very little to do with their consumption. Most of their wealth is in the companies that they own and helped build up. And the reason they have that wealth, is because they managed those companies well.In other words - the better you are at managing resources to produce goods and services for others (not for yourself!), the wealthier you get. The wealthier you get, the more resources you get under your management. Those resources are something you are responsible for; managing them effectively is a job; you are not enjoying or consuming that wealth, you are managing that wealth to produce goods and services for OTHERS in a most efficient way. It's an amazing system, if you think about it; without coercion, violence, or any form of central government, you get more resources under management of those who are better at managing them to produce goods and services for others! And those who are bad at it, get a reduction in the share of resources under their command. And what's so bad about that?To add to that - when a wealthy person produces goods and services for others, she gets a claim on the goods and services of others in return - "money". It would be perfectly fair for them to spend that money for their own consumption - luxury items, building a massive monument to themselves, you name it - like many kings, tyrants, dictators have done in the past. But instead, most of them INVEST that money - that is, use those claims on the goods and services of others not for their own benefit, but to produce more goods and services for others! By being "greedy" and ultimately trying to earn more money, they are actually being altruistic! So - if somebody did want to get angry about something, it should be the inequality of consumption, not wealth. And how much do the top 1% consume? That would be an interesting statistic, but I imagine very difficult to obtain. How much wealth did Steve Jobs consume? Bill Gates? Warren Buffet? It is at least theoretically possible, that a billionaire (again note: who has most of those billions in capital, not cash under his bed) would not consume much more than a median family. And what then is there to be angry/concerned about?Intuitively, most people understand that. They may say they are angry about the 1% owning a disproportionate amount of wealth, but then you ask them about Steve Jobs, and they would have no problem with him having owned Apple and thus having all that wealth.I believe the general public are being misled and manipulated in this regard. Wealth inequality, when that wealth is accumulated through peaceful means in a free market, is not something to be concerned about. Having world's top resource managers competing to have more resources under their management, where the goal of their management is to produce goods and services for others more efficiently, is a good thing.

Why should you not post your license plate online?

A common answer is “it’s fine, because your plate is out in the public every day”It’s not fine:Because of my family’s business, I (as the ‘computer guy’ of the family) subscribe to a background checking service.while I rarely use this function, it includes a license plate lookup, which can access information in most states.keep in mind to SUBSCRIBE to this paid service, I had to submit some background information on myself and the buisness, and pay a yearly feeevery time I run a name or address thru this service, it reminds me of the limitations of its use, most noteably what I can and cannot use the information received for.out of curiosity, I ran a few plates one day that belonged to family members.mine did not come back, probably because of both it’s specialty type, and because of a privacy order on my plate. The remainder of the plates in my family came back appropriately to the address and registered owner of the vehicle.however, when running the plates, it asked additional questions each time, specifically geared towards the state the plate was from. It basically asked what my legal justification was for running the plate.in Texas, there are a ton of valid reasons for an individual or company to run a plate. In New Mexico, there are less valid reasons, but still several.now, one would think, ok, there’s safeguards on this system, so it should be ok right?Yeah, no. The more I thought about it, I realized how easy it would be to use this service for less then good intentions.see someone on the street driving? Run their plate and find out where they live.new car in front of your ex’s house? Run the plate to see who he issomeone cut you off? Run their plate later and egg their house.ALL I needed to say was “this is my name; this is the company; this is the industry; no, I’m not in a position where this would violate the fair credit act; here’s my credit card number”how much did they ACTUALLY verify that I have a legal reason to run personal information?so, realizing how much access I have to that type of information just by paying a fee, I realize now that keeping my information limited can be prudent.

How do restaurant owners feel when someone orders only the cheapest item on the menu?

As a restaurant owner I can speak from experience that apart from patrons ordering from a kids menu inappropriately (after all, those items are in place to help make dining out more accessible to families that otherwise wouldn’t), I have no qualms with anyone ordering as little or as much off the menu as they please.Sure, as an owner or operator you can refuse service to anyone for any reason not in contravention of human rights laws, but refusing service for menu selection is both petty and short-sighted. You never know whether the individual coming to dine in pajamas with red eyes simply asking for a bowl of soup or a coffee is going to be a constant drain on your service team, or whether they are having an off day and could be a return customer in the near future -possibly with guests- after receiving excellent service when it wasn’t expected. If an establishment doesn't want an item to be purchased, don’t have it on the menu. And speaking from direct experience, if you treat all your patrons the same, you will be pleasantly surprised more often than not where a significant portion of your revenue might come from down the road.
