Where can I find good resources for writing a biology essay?

Expectations of a scientific essay are quite different from a VCE assignment. Firstly, you are expected to make your own search of the literature, using mostly material found in the Hargrave Andrew Library (or any other library at a tertiary education or research institute). This is a time consuming task and we urge you to start as soon as possible after you have received your topic. Gather notes and sources simultaneously that will help you construct your biology essay outline, which will help to ensure that you organize your thoughts in a manner that continually refers back to your thesis statement. With a biology essay, you may be required to include pictures, illustrations, and/or graphs to substantiate your argumentation or as a means of adding a visual explanation for aspects of biology that can take a considerable word count to explain.

How can I write a 1st class scientific essay in an exam?

Here’s how I used to teach writing to undergrads as a teaching assistant during my PhD. It is a how to guide for writing scientific essays based on learnings from professors and other students. Some of the tips here can be applied more broadly to writing in general, although there is less of an emphasis on story tellingGeneral points1) Be concise. The best essays are not the longest; they are the ones with the highest information content. The fewer words you use to accurately explain a concept, the better. This skill will pay dividends when you are pressed for time in the exams2) A scientific essay aims to explain some aspect of the natural world using experimental evidence and examplesHere is how not to do it (taken from a real essay):Activators are usually activated in a sequence, where the activation of one protein induces the activation of the other one; in some other cases, activators have to bind together to be able to get bound to a DNA sequence; coactivators can be necessaryIn this sentence, the word activator has been used in one form or another six times, yet it neither explains what an activator is nor how they work. Here is a better version:RNA polymerase II is not sufficient to drive transcription in vitro, other proteins known as activators are also required. They were first identified using conventional chromatography; by fractionating nuclear extracts and testing for their ability to drive transcription. These activators are typically basal transcription factors that recognize sequence specific elements in the promoters of genes. For example, the activator TATA-binding protein (TBP) recognizes the 8bp AT-rich TATA-box element in ~10% of human promotersYou can see how using a combination of experimental evidence and examples we have explained; what activators are, how we know they exist, and how they work3) Answer the question. If you see the word ‘transcription’ it does not mean you should recite everything you know about transcription. Discussing related information that is not strictly relevant will both wastes time and suggests that you misunderstood what was being asked.4) The essay should flow from paragraph to paragraph in a logical way. One way to achieve this is through cheesy link sentencesHow do we recognize these cheesy link sentences? Easy – you’ve just read one. Use these sentences to let the examiner know what stage of your argument you are at and where you are going next:So activators recognize specific sequences in promoters, but how does this lead to RNA polymerase mediated transcription? They recruit other proteins called co-activators. Co-activators…If you find it difficult to fit these link sentences to paragraphs in your essay, or if you find yourself referring back to previous paragraphs (e.g. “As I mentioned earlier”) other than in link sentences, think about how you have ordered the contents of your essay5) Avoid ‘flowery’ language; be precise. For example: don’t refer to bacteria as ‘these little creatures’, just call them bacteria6) Avoid phrases such as: “the mechanism is not well understood”. Things are often better understood than you think. Instead evaluate the evidence critically7) Use diagrams. Do not just throw them in randomly; refer to them in the text. Biological pathways, reaction mechanisms, cell / organelle structure, graphs etc. all look great when used appropriately. Only draw detailed diagrams you have practiced in advance for the exams. Make them big - half a side minimum. Use pencil and ruler to draw, pen to annotate8) Be strict on time. If you have 40 minutes to write an essay, spend 40 minutes. Three average essays are much better than one brilliant essay followed by two terrible onesPlanningSketch out your answer to the question and what you will discuss in each paragraph, in what order. Even in the exams, spend 5 minutes planning the essay. It will save you time when you actually write itIntroductionIf you plan the essay well, the introduction should write itself. Answer the question, without elaborating in any detail. If possible, answer it in the first sentence. Do not simply repeat the title of the question, stating that you intend to answer it in the essay! Also avoid opening gambits such as: “X is one of the most important Ys on earth, without X life wouldn’t be possible”Examiners are going to have in mind certain ideas that should be discussed for a particular essay. Therefore try and include key words in your intro to show the examiner you will be discussing these ideas. E.g. for an essay on transcription, you might expect to include some of these words: mRNA, transcription factors, activators, co-activators / repressors, RNA polymerase II, promoters, enhancers etc. The introduction should also act as a map for the reader, laying out in a logical fashion how you intend to answer the questionMain bodyHere you bring in the detail, use evidence and examples to explain the answer to the question outlined in the introduction. Use detailed examples to highlight key mechanisms. Refer back to the question and show the examiner that you are answering itTake a historical perspective, showing how our understanding has developed. Or you can set up the answer by describing the problem posed by the question, apparent paradoxes, or alternative theoriesRichard Dawkins is the master of thisConclusionRe-state the answer to the question as succinctly as possible. Sum up what you have explained in the essay in a few sentences without being repetitive

This was one pdf app I tried. The others included PDFpenPro, PDF Expert, and Adobe Acrobat. Adobe Acrobat always has been too difficult and temperamental to use. PDFpenPro is excellent, especially the OCR function, but it's interface also is less intuitive than it should be. PDFExpert has a very good, very intuitive interface as well as many other features that are quite good. It's not as good as PDFPenPro at OCR. PDFElement 6 Pro was unusable because it crashes on my Retina MacBookPro, 15", Late 2013, 2 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, OS X 10.14.6. I found that the Find command didn't work, nor did the autoupdate. These may have been fixed in version 7. I'm not sure.
