But he's currently nodding out in a chair at 7:30, before even taking any pain meds. EE, not programmer. And usually still going strong.)

I have had colonoscopy about every 2 years for 12 years and have been give IV sedation. .Doctor comes in brief chat who am I , my birthdate, checked from my arm band and agreed to by the RN Brief exam of heart lungs and neck and oral and abdomen and pulses in feet and arms. RN has already gone thru meds and computer with me and I have signed and reviewed consent to procedure with risks , benefits, alternative, and asked if I have any further questions. I say I am ready . Dr orders nurse to give the IV pre med and then the IV med and asks me to count down from 100. By about 97 I don’t recall anything at all and wake up in recovery room with the nurses saying all went fine and several biopsies were done and the doctor will be by soon. I feel well and peaceful . The doctor comes by and speaks briefly about the scope and await biopsies and will let me know and asks for questions and says I can go home . The nurse says she is calling my wife to meet us at the hospital entrance with the car . She has me get dressed and I am a bit woozy and she brings me the wheelchair and i stand and sit down in it and she wheels me to the elevator and to the car drop area and my wife is there and I get in and glad to be going home. Eat a light dinner and go to sleep. I have no recall at all of the procedure. I have had multiple other sigmoidoscopies and colonoscopies without this sedation before this and it was very uncomfortable with the scope and air in my abdomen and pain in the rectal area with rectal finger and the scope moving in and out. Hurts more with hemorrhoids . Sedation is so much better . Crohn’s patient since 1986.

For US med schools that grant the degree of MD, only 44% of applicants get at least one offer of admission. 56% of applicants get zero offers of admission. This statistic comes from the AMCAS website. This very low success rate is not due to low-quality applicants - the median applicant who got rejected everywhere got a 26 on the MCAT, had an overall GPA of 3.7, and had a science GPA of 3.7. Those GPAs are pretty good, but the an MCAT of 26 is quite mediocre.So only 44% of applicants get an offer of acceptance, yet the applicant pool is pretty strong.Less than 3% of matriculants at MD schools fail to graduate for academic reasons. This statistic also comes from AMCAS, and was quoted in the New England Journal of Medicine last week as being too low - the author thinks more people should fail med school.The first-time pass rate on Step 1 is over 95% at most med schools. And if you fail, you can take it again. You can also take the MCAT multiple times, but med schools see every attempt (unless you void it without seeing your score), and having bad scores mixed with good scores will hurt your chances.This is true in the US currently. This is not just my opinion, I have asked several recent med school graduates. This was not true in the 1970s, getting in used to be easier then. This is not true in many other countries, either.I know a grand total of one person who was accepted to med school and did not eventually graduate. One.Med school is more hours of work, sure. Med school is also higher stakes in that you might accidentally kill a patient (I know someone who did this). But med school is lower stakes in terms of your own career. If you got in, there is a 97% chance you will successfully become a doctor.
