Well, Bobby, this is what I was larned by candlelight from Preacher Rowe when he come by the cabin to comfort mama and learn her some bio, bio, hio-somethin'. According to Preacher, the sun is one of the tools G** uses to show people He loves them. But sometimes when He's angry with people for sinnin' all the time, He uses the sun to punish them. Preacher says what G** does is He makes the sun shoot out space rays. Most of the time, these space rays are good for folks, but when G** is angry, better watch out!Now, these space rays are real powerful, like you'd expect from G**, angry or not. When they hit somethin' that's alive they don't kill 'em — Preacher says that's not G**'s way — and they don't even hurt. But they change what they hit. Sometimes you don't notice for a while, but sometimes you can see the change, like when Uncle Ray and Ant Deseret got hitched, even though they was brother and sister. Mama said they had to, but she told me not to tell anyone out of the holler cause they don't understand our ways.So anyways, three months after the weddin' Ant Deseret had a baby, right on schedule for married folks I guess. Ant Dessie called him Algernon for some reason or other, and all the women and girls was all sited about him, but he didn't look right to me, with his ears on his neck and all his toes on the one foot. Mama said Algy took after his pa, but I didn:t see no semblance.A couple days later Preacher come by, even though Papa was home sick with the the lung people here get sometimes. The two of em got to drinkin' as usual, and when Papa went out to shake the snake like he calls it, Preacher call me over. He ask me do I know why little Algy has the funny ears. I tended I didn't no what he was talkin' bout, but he grabbed my arm and started squeezin' like does when he sees you aren't pain tension during his sermon. I told him yeah, I saw that and kinda wondered. Preacher says G** did that cause He was angry Ray and Deseret had a baby. Preacher wouldn't say why G** was angry. He just was I guess.A couple weeks later Deseret and Uncle Ray went to see kin in Houston. When they come back, Ant Deseret wouldn't stop cryin' all the time, and Uncle Ray tole everone they had lost baby Algy in the big flood we musta heard bout. The women took Deseret home and the men all nodded there head and shook Uncle Ray's hand like he done somethin' good or somethin'.
