PDF Editor FAQ

Why do some Quorans not use the search function on Quora to check if their question has been asked before?

This is not a Quora problem. This is such a common thing on the internet in general that more than one acronym exists to describe it.They are, in no particular order after the first, which was first used way back in the 1970s:)RTFM - Read The F$*%ing ManualRTFA - Read The F$*%ing ArticleWTFV - Watch The F$*%ing VideoSTFW - Search The F$*%ing WebGIYF - Google Is Your FriendLMGTFY - Let Me Google That For YouFrom the wording of the acronyms themselves, you can see that people have found this problem of people asking the same question over and over again more than a bit frustrating. Indeed, the initial phrasing was overtly aggressive.[1]Lest anyone think the last two are polite, they are not. They are merely passive-aggressive epithets. Offering up Google is your Friend or Let me google that for you as responses to questions is somehow worse than not answering at all.So, to the original question of why does this phenomenon actually exist in the first place?Actually, it has a lot to do with how we learn new things. There are multiple factors that come together to determine what type of information someone needs to understand something (i.e., visual, auditory, experiential, raw data...)Additionally, there are other, completely different factors that determine how a person is convinced that what they just learned is true.A person can:[2]See or watch something or someone do something (Convinced by Seeing)Hear about how good something or someone is (Convinced by Hearing)Do something with someone (Convinced by Doing)Read about something or someone's ability (Convinced by Reading)What's interesting is that a person who is a visual learner may actually need to be Convinced by Doing, or an experiential learner might need to be Convinced by Reading about someone else's experience before going out on their own.The people who write answers on Quora, message boards, and even those technical manuals going all the way back to the 70's tend to be of a similar profile in that they both can learn from and are convinced by written information. YouTube Periscope/instructors etc are for visual learners, and so on. These people have already found their home. The people who come to ask repetitive questions are the ones who are still searching for the place that works for them.By asking, it's not merely data they're seeking, it's information plus proof that someone else has already verified it (whether or not it is someone they know) that will enable them to perceive it as a "true" answer.I always found the easiest path was to be friendly, welcoming and answer the question even if it was for the 100,000th time (and yes, I did have a counter at Evernote.) :)Footnotes[1] Behavioral communication[2] What does it take to Convince Someone? Do you think your native language sounds beautiful or ugly?

My native language is English, specifically the British/American combination people from large Canadian cities speak. (“How do I itemize these multicoloured sabres?”)I see English as a very functional language. It has all kinds of little words modifying each other to convey a very specific grammatical structure, as opposed to a larger idea. Word order matters more than in some other languages, as do quirks like participles and prepositions. There is also less figurative language, and when it does occur, it’s more literal. The Frankfurt International School explains word order here: English Grammar Explanations - Word orderMost English sentences (clauses) conform to the SVO word order. This means that the Subject comes before the Verb, which comes before the Object. Examples:I (S) bought (V) a new computer (O).She (S) doesn't like (V) dogs (O).Why did you (S) do (V) that (O)?It is more complicated when an indirect object (I) is added to the sentence. In this case the word order depends a.) on whether the direct and indirect objects are nouns or pronouns, and b.) on whether the indirect object is preceded by the word to. Here are the basic rules: <rules redacted - click the link if you want to read them>Check out how Merriam-Webster, that most American (and thus English-speaking) of sources, explains what a present participle is: Definition of PRESENT PARTICIPLEa participle that typically expresses present action in relation to the time expressed by the finite verb in its clause and that in English is formed with the suffix -ing and is used in the formation of the progressive tensesI am a native English speaker. I have an English degree. I have a book blog. I’ve written novels. I communicate in words all day for my job. I still barely understand that sentence, yet I know I have to apply it every time I say something as simple as “I am going to the store”. Want to know why English is considered so tough to master as a second language? Participles are one of those reasons. Then there are our beautifully poetic similes: https://literarydevices.net/figurative-language/Poised between going on and back, pulledBoth ways taut like a tight-rope walkerTaut like a rope and/or someone walking on it? Not like the tension at the first Christmas dinner after the messy divorce, or like the finger of a teenager at her violin recital who can’t bring herself to pluck the string? English is a very literal language.English isn’t beautiful or ugly because linguistic beauty isn’t something that occurred to the population that created the language. Asking whether English is beautiful is like asking which sailboat has the best engine.English is the ideal language for a technical manual. For an opera, not so much.

How do I live in Norway? I want to either move to Tromso, Alesund or Trondheim. What do you recommend?

For foreigners it can be a bit of a chore to get a visa, but once you do, just go there. Buy or rent a place to live, and try finding a job. Having a skill already makes that a lot easier. Especially manual labor skills are easy to get jobs in, as most Norwegians tend to get higher education.Speaking of which, you could apply for a school (university or college) to get into the country on a student visa for a start. Schools are free for everyone, including foreigners, and they have classes in english for many of the programs. I would check NTNU: Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet for Trondheim or http://Uit.no for Tromsø. Trondheim has the best technical studies, and Tromsø has the best law study and psychology. Both have good linguistics studies, and many more than the ones I’ve mentioned.Which city you should live in depends on what you want. For nature and scenery and physical activity, I would recommend Tromsø with it’s many mountains, northern lights and midnight sun. For fishing I would recommend Ålesund. For everything else (but none of the above), I would recommend Trondheim. I’ve lived in all three towns. The latter is probably the easiest to get integrated in, as it is the biggest of the three, and there’s stuff to do for everyone. The city itself is very pretty, although all three are, and they don’t call Tromsø The Paris of the North for nothing. My favorite of the three is Tromsø, but Trondheim is close behind, and both of these are my favorite towns in Norway. For integration I would recommend reading up on how Norwegians behave. They are very friendly, but not easy to get close to. They have a bigger personal space than in other countries, and they need a reason to befriend you. Your best bet would be to sign up for some sports team/club/hobby, so you have an excuse for talking to people. If you do, you’ll easily make friends. Norwegians are shy, but if you “force” them to talk to you, you’ll fast become friends. However, younger people are better at this than older people. Here is a blog which illustrates in a funny way how Norwegians are: The Social Guidebook to Norway. It’s written by a French Canadian living and working at the university in Trondheim.
