This is tough, because the British are much less likely to idolise their leaders than the Americans; our leaders just aren't really designed for that. The monarchy, which carries the prestige of the state, has no power of government, so they're essentially identical figureheads. And the Prime Ministers, which hold the foremost position in government, have none of the prestige of the state, meaning there's no tinsel and baubles draped over them as celebration for having a shit.But, since this is about Prime Ministers, I'll just pick my top four.Arthur Wellesley/Duke of Wellington. Granted, he wasn't the greatest Prime Minister, but his achievements come before that. He's the general who led the British war effort against Napoleon, drove the French out of Spain and advanced all the way to Paris. He's the general who broke the power of the Mahratta confederacy and paved the way for the future of the British empire as the next true superpower. He's the general who defeated Napoleon Bonaparte himself (of course, it's more ambiguous than that, but the simple fact is that he did win). He's a national hero - not for being PM, but for being one of the greatest British generals of all time.Clement Attlee. The reason for this is simple; he introduced the National Health Service. The beautiful institution which has cared for the British people for 71 years, whether rich or poor, at no cost out of pocket. The only people who don't like the NHS are the dewy-eyed libertarians who think the USA shits roses.Winston Churchill. Utter bastard, and a dreadful peacetime PM. But he was possibly the one man who had the stubbornness and sheer willpower to lead us through the Second World War. He was a bastard, but we needed a bastard.Earl Grey. No, it's not just a tea. He's the PM who presided over the British ban on the transatlantic slave trade, possibly the single greatest good ever to come from the United Kingdom. Sure, it didn't stop slavery entirely, but it forcibly halted the involvement of other European countries.
