Bringing Light to my sweet home!!!!Hello friends.!This is not just a story; it’s an experience to share with you. It started with the idea to create my sweet home from paper to real. We started the journey to construct our house with bare land. I would like to share my experience with you to get the electricity connection from monopoly market of distribution companies. These distribution companies have exclusivity in area distributed amongst them. This exclusivity makes them king in the market. Also we are talking about utility- electricity which is a dire need for today’s mechanised world. All together these makes them conqueror of that market area.It started a month ago. I approached the company (here I am going to use company instead of naming them) with all necessary documents required to get a temporary single phase connection for construction of my house. I had seen all the procedures and forms from the company’s website. So that it can be easier for both (I and company). I went to the nearest division of the company (“Division X”). Here I communicated with one officer with all my documents and he told me to approach the main branch for the new connection. So I went to the main branch on next day. I reached there may be during lunch time. I am not sure because there is no sign board available for timing of the working hours. There was a person inside the office who told me to wait for an hour. I still don’t know the lunch timings. I was in hurry at that time. I thought I would come later.On next day Saturday, I approached the officer in-charge of single phase connection (“Mr. A”). He hardly seen the documents and told me the documents were not complete and to come after two and half hour. Here I was surprised that he was going for lunch for two hours which I have not seen anywhere but as I told earlier I was not having any idea of lunch timings over there. At this time, I was sure that my documents were complete. I went to another officer in that office to confirm that. He confirmed the same but he was not in-charge of that department so he advised me to meet Mr. A again. After 3.5 hours I again went to that department to meet Mr. A but he was not available at that time. I asked the colleague of Mr. A and he replied me to come later. Now I was little upset So I went to Mr. A’s senior regarding this. He shouted to that colleague of Mr. A and told him to attend my application. He shown his anger on me and told me that I had to come exactly after 2.5 hours as told by Mr. A and I was there after 3.5 hours. Now here He told me that my documents were complete but I had to complete the survey done by the company. He asked me to visit Division X which I visited earlier. I am sure that to get survey done is not customer’s responsibility. This is not shown in the procedure on its website. Also the officer whom I visited in that branch could have told me at that point of time about the survey procedure but none care about that. I was in need of the electricity so I went to that branch on same day evening. The officer in-charge was not available at that point of time and I was asked to leave those documents on his table. Also one employee had given me the number of that officer.I visited Division X on Monday to get the survey done but no one in office was having any idea where was that officer. Someone told me he was on field. So I called that officer and he replied that he was on leave for three days. Now I had to wait for another 3 days to get the survey done. On fourth day evening, that officer sent the surveyor to site of my home and given the form completing the survey. I want to highlight that in absence of the officer of company, there is no one as a replacement for him and customers have to wait till that officer come back to work. This is hard to digest.Now after completing this procedure, I went to main branch to submit my application to Mr. A. Think what Mr. A was not available and his colleague was not ready to attend me. Again I have to visit Mr. A’s senior and after that only they received my application and given me my application number. Here have you marked they have not given me my application number till this time so that they don’t have any responsibility to perform. It was more than a week time before accepting the application which is nowhere on paper on which you can blame the company. Now I was at a relief that finally its completed but wait the process is not over yet.I came to know they would give me the estimate and I have to pay that. And then only company will provide me the connection. Now I called Mr. A to know about the estimate value. He rudely replied that it cannot be given on immediate basis. So I waited for 3 more days for the estimate to come. After 3 days I called him and he replied roughly that I have to visit nearest post office to enquire and disconnected the call. Here he had not given me any reference number for tracking the same. I visited Mr. A again to know about it again he replied the same and left the place. Now I visited Mr. A’s senior after waiting for an hour. He asked colleague of Mr. A to give the estimate. Here I came to know that Mr. A had not done the estimate work and his senior had approved the estimate in front of me. You have to notice that company’s employee can lie on your face and you don’t have any proof of that. So this resulted in delay of my work. After this I paid the estimate amount and I was at relief that I would get my connection in near future. I confirmed that I don’t have to follow any procedure after paying estimate with customer care. So I was relaxed but I noticed that no one came to install pole for next five days.After five days time, I received a letter (on plain paper) from the company that there was some obstructions i.e. sand & bricks at site so company will not install light pole near my house till I remove those obstruction. They had not mentioned where and how much area would be required for installation of pole. I want to highlight some points. (1.) It was not company’s letter head, (2.) They have not given me information where they want to install the pole. (3.) I doubt that is it customer’s responsibility to remove obstacles?After receipt of this letter, I looked for the contractor number by personal means. I contacted him and asked him to visit the site. He told me he can install the pole there were no obstacles. So this was just a delay of my work. I requested him to install the pole. He installed the pole. Now I thought that I would receive the connection but how can I get that this much easily.After 4 days, I called Mr. A but he did not receive my call. So I called customer care to know the status. They told me to wait for 2-3 days and also confirmed that I did not have to do anything. I again called Mr. A after 2 days and replied I have to submit the Test report for that electricity connection. I asked him there is nothing on site and it is just temporary connection but he asked me to do the same. I managed to submit the test report by local means. As on today, I have submitted the test report and paid test report fees. They could have told me to submit test report before accepting the application. Also I doubt that test report is required for temporary connection.One month has passed and I have not received my temporary single phase light connection and because of this my sweet home construction has not yet started. Now I have arranged one generator as of now. This situation drives me crazy and making frustrating but Let me wait what will come next. People say we are going to compete with this fast world…. Are we????Findings:1.Company states that they will give you connection within 7 days or 15 days as per connection type. This is a dream they are talking about.2.Employee of the company lie on your face and you can do nothing about that.3.No application number given at the time of approaching the office.4.You cannot imagine what kind of query they will raise to delay the Job.5.Their monopoly which makes me frustrated and weak as a customer.6.No fixed working hours and office employee is going on field any time and customer can not track them.7.No replacement of employee in his absence.Suggestions for you:1.)Complete all documents and go to submit the form in morning after 30 min of start of the day.(because there is no working hours stated in office)2.)Get the survey done before going to submit the form and get your application number as soon as possible.3.)Arrange for test report as per your future requirements even if there is nothing at the site and attached the same along with application.4.)Ask officer for estimate in person and also asked for the reference number if he has posted the estimate.5.)Three payments have to be made for temporary connection, (i) Application time (ii) estimate, (iii) Test report submission.6.)Don’t hesitate to meet senior officers but don’t argue with the in-charge person otherwise they are going to delay the work by raising queries.I don’t know when I will get my electricity connection……!!!!!!

I think i am qualify to give a answer of this question as i recently completed my internship in L & T Technology Services (It is a consultant body of L & T for construction project) .As a Construction Manager very hectic schedule he has.He have to regulate, control, monitoring all activities involved in Construction Project. In major Construction Project many contractors are involved in it, like contractor for RCC Structure, Steel Structure , Equipment Erection , Pipe Fitting, Mechanical work , Electrical work , for Anti- Termite operation , Shuttering work , Reinforcement work. So as a Project Manager he has a duty to co-ordinate all those contractor.As a Construction Manager he has to make planing for whole project including different nature of work and he have to hand over to that planned schedule to respective contractor . After hand over of schedule he has to track all the activities which are going to be done in particular day and he have to check whether the work going on the field is going to as per planned or not. If work is not going to be as per planned ,let’s say work is delaying then he have to generate solution to remove backlog work by increasing resources (I.e. man power, machinery, material) , working hours .He have to check all test report for Cement, Sand,Aggregates,Chemical Admixtures, machinery which is going to be used in site.And have to give quality assurance to client.He have to inspect all structural member on site.He has to check Leveling sheets, Planning &Scheduling, Estimated Quantity,Billing Sheet, Material Available on site, Material Received per day, Weekly Planing Sheet, Monthly planing Sheet, Planned Vs. Achieved work,No. of labours availablity with matching skill on site.And have to guide and consultant to Contractors ,Engineers and Supervisor for quality concern.Safety is also included in all these things he have to maintain.He have to compile all different data of different nature of work from all contractors and have to prepare daily , weekly, and monthly progress report and have to send to client and his superior.Moreover he have to arrange meetings weekly with client and contractors and have to represent work which has been completed till date and which is still remaining as per planing . And he have to justify how he can able to recover pending work under Terms and Conditions mentioned as per tender.Have to submit all reports concerning to quality, safety, cash flow and many others.In aspects of this Job , i will tell it is white collar job for Civil discipline.Even though Doing such tonnes of task he came to office on 10 AM and leaves at 6 PM and visit site twice or thrice in day.Great Pay Scale and other allowance are obvious.

I see that you live in the US, so this answer is for the US.Devices can be wired in a number of ways:Side Wired (the most common connection method)Push-in Back Wired “Backstabbed”Back Wired - Screw & Clamp PlatePlug-ConnectedSide WiredSide wiring is the classical method used to connect wires to a receptacle or switch (device). Side wiring has proven to be a reliable method of attaching copper wires to a device.In the classic side-wire about 3/4 inch of insulation is stripped off of the end of the wire (most receptacles have a wire strip gauge on their back).Then the copper wire is bent into a U-shape so that it can be wrapped around the screw terminal on the receptacle.Then the U-shaped wire is placed under the screw terminal, with the wire positioned such that tightening the screw will tighten the U-shape (see the photo below).Because of the requirement for this U-shape - side wiring works best with solid (rather than stranded) conductors. (Personally I would never use this type of device with stranded wires. Some would use crimp-terminals here, but I don’t like and don’t use this method for a number of reasons.)Creating a U-shape with stranded wire just does not work that well (yes, there is a method to do this where part of the insulation is left on the wire - watch the YouTube video below).More on using stranded wire later on.Push-In Back Wiring - “Backstabbing”Side wiring is secure and has withstood the test of time, but it requires a certain amount of skill to properly bend the wire and more significantly takes a fair amount of time to accomplish.In an effort to reduce the amount of time required to wire a device the manufactures developed the backstabbing system.In backstabbing one simply strips the required length on insulation from the end of the wire and then inserts or “stabs” the stripped wire into the back of the device.So backstabbing is significantly faster and easier than side wiring.The question that is always asked is “is backstabbing safe?” In lieu of having a standard against which to measure or test the safety of device wiring methods, the answer to this is opinion or personal experience.Rather than going there I will ask “does backstabbing produce as secure a connection as does side wiring?” Anyone with any knowledge or experience with side wiring and backstabbing will clearly understand that side wiring produces a more secure connection than does backstabbing.(Note that connections via backstabbing are UL Listed only for solid copper wire, not for stranded wire.)But is backstabbing “secure enough?” Again, this is a matter of experience and opinion. Personally I won’t ever backstab a device, and if I come across one that is backstabbed I will replace it with a higher quality device.This is not to say that many experienced electricians are against using backstabbing. Many use backstabbed receptacles and report no problems with them. There are other electricians that will never hear of using them. I heard one electrician say he loves it when others use backstabbed devices because replacing failed ones is a good source of revenue for him!This is one of those areas where you get to make the decision for yourself.It might help to understand the mechanism and contact points in a backstabbed device. In a backstabbed device there are two very small points of contact between the wire and the receptacle metal, held simply by spring tension (see photos below). I personally am not going to count on this for my residence or for any place that I am responsible for.Backstabbed devices have been shown to be the source of overheating.Backstabbing is generally found only on the most inexpensive “residential grade” devices.Screw & Clamp Plate Back WiringGiven the problems with backstabbing and the desire to have devices that can be wired quickly, device manufacturers developed a back wired method that creates a secure connection. That method is variously called:Screw and plateScrew and clampetc.In this method, like with backstabbing, the wire is stripped, left straight and inserted straight into the receptacle. However - on this type of receptacle the wire is held beneath a clamping plate, where that clamping plate is tightened with the screw terminal.This creates a secure wire termination.This type of wire connection method is found in higher-quality devices from all major device manufacturers. This is the type of device that I use.One significant advantage of this type of connection method is for commercial and industrial applications, where stranded conductors are typically used. With stranded wire and clamp and plate back wired devices the stripped end of the wire is simply inserted into the clamp plate and tightened - just as with solid wire.Plug-ConnectedWith plug-connected devices the conductors are wired to a plug, which then is plugged into the back of the device. This is a fairly new development.Electrical contractors on larger commercial projects often like to use them, because wiring can be completed before rough-in inspection. Then after rough-in inspection all that needs to be done is to plug into the device, mount the device to the box and attach the faceplate - all of which can be done quickly and by a lower-experience person.At least from the one manufacturer I looked at (Pass & Seymour) these are available with a pigtail coming out of the plug, the pigtail wires being crimped and welded to the terminals in the plug. They also sell a version where the branch circuit wires can be inserted into the plug. I don’t have any personal with the insertion type - so I personally would not specify of use them until I did a lot more research on them.
