PDF Editor FAQ
Where can I study Aristotelian logic?
Thomas Aquinas College, in Santa Paula, CA, is probably the best undergraduate school for the study of Aristotle, and I highly recommend it, not just because I went there. Additionally, the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley is an excellent place to pursue graduate level study in Aristotelian thought, including logic.
Did people during the Great Depression eat only once per day?
It really depended on where you were during Depression. My grandparents were the parents of three children when the Depression came along. My grandfather was a short order cook in restaurants and my grandmother took care of the kids. She didn’t drive and she didn’t work outside the home.During the years that the Depression lasted they moved a LOT. And they went from a 2BR house in a decent Los Angeles neighborhood down to a 1BR in East LA. The baby slept in a dresser drawer, my mom and her sister shared the couch and their parents got the bedroom. During the summers, they camped for 3 months to save money on rent. Grandpa would rent a room near work and maybe come out on weekends. Frequently he couldn’t because he had to work. Most of the time in the city they had food because grandpa would bring home leftovers from the restaurant. But a lot of restaurants went under, so he didn’t always have work, and during the summers he couldn’t bring the food to them as they camped.Around the time Mom started high school, they moved to Santa Paula. It was a super small town, Grandpa had work, and they were able to get a 2BR house to rent. Mom went to work as soon as she could, usually working with Grandpa as a waitress. She graduated high school, but had to forego a full scholarship to UCLA because the family needed her wages. She married when WWII started up for the US.Dad was orphaned at age 2, but had been “fostered” out at age 10 or so to some people with a large farm (4 acres) in upstate New York. I think he was at the tail end of the Orphan Trains of that era, because these people had about ten foster boys and they provided all the labor to run their farm. The family’s own boys did not work the farm and the fosters were well informed as to their status in the hierarchy (in essence, slave labor). They learned a lot of skills, but had no real love shown them. They did however, have food. The 4-acre farm provided all the family’s needs. It was rural so they didn’t have indoor plumbing, but they had a place to sleep, and they usually had enough to eat. Vegetables and fruits were canned for the winter months when things were sparser; extra were sold at local spots to make a little money for the things the farm couldn’t grow. There was not a lot of meat; there were a lot of potatoes. My dad could eat potatoes 3 x a day, 7 days a week. I don’t share his affinity. ;-) He finished high school and joined the Naval Reserves. He saw duty during WWII in Bermuda and the Arctic Circle (who’d he piss off??), and met Mom after WWII in northern California where he was discharged. So yes, there were many times when my mom’s family ate once a day. Dad’s situation provided more food, but they were manually toiling all day.Now it’s a “thing” and people call it intermittent fasting. I did it too, when I first left home. It’s all I could afford, even working long 12-hours days. In retrospect, it’s probably why I had mood swings, was irritable af, and cried a lot. Low blood sugar and all that. But it can be done when necessary.
Is the new Seiko Alpinist a high-quality watch? I’m thinking of selling my 34 mm Rolex Air King. I am no longer interested in brands.
I’ll answer that this way…When I was first on newspapers as a photographer I had some classic old school Nikons and Nikon lenses. Since I was going to a new job I decided to trade them in for the latest Nikons. This was all before digital. After a few months on the job shooting on the Santa Paula Daily Chronicle, I noticed all my photos were flatter than they’d been with the original older Nikons. There wasn’t the depth or contrast, nor a lot of other quality that I couldn’t put my finger on.Eventually I researched differences between what I had traded in, and what turned out to be entry level Nikon cameras and lenses I bought. They were in two different worlds of quality, hence the noticeable differences. In cars I might put it as the difference between a tricked out Subaru, which is nice and I wouldn’t mind having, and a Porsche Cayman. Anyone who’d prefer the Subaru might be the kind of guy who’d think a Seiko Alpinist is the equal of a classic vintage Rolex Air King. Not to demean one, but just uninformed. If you are tired of the Air King, or just want something else, that’s great. Just don’t be under the misapprehension that they are anywhere even near the same category of watch. They ain’t.Don’t wear a watch you don’t care for just because it’s a much, much, much better and more prestigious watch than the one you want. Be sure to get a good price for it. And enjoy your Alpinist. We all have our idiosyncrasies where at times we might enjoy a Little Caesar’s pizza over a fine Borlotti Beans Tagliatelle from Ristorante Villa Crespi. Or Cracker Jacks vs. tiramisu.Enjoy what you like. Just don’t kid yourself.Cheers.
