What are the points to be covered in a statement of purpose for applying for graduate school?

Interesting answers.Let me add a different point of view. I've been a professor for 10 years, and have looked through hundreds of SOPs every year as part of grad admissions for our CS department.OK, this is going to be slightly disappointing to some of you, but at least my personal view is that, with the exception of a couple of points which I'll mention below, in general, the SOP just doesn't matter. You have to realize we admissions committees look through hundreds of these. So everyone will have some version of "I found my first PC when I was 4 years old and fell in love..." story. It's cool, and it means a lot to many of the applicants, but it doesn't do much to help their case for why THEY should be admitted over the other hundreds of students in the pool. So yes, do NOT make grammatical errors, do not say inane things that reflect *negatively*. But beyond that, most SOPs will do little to hurt or help your application. Now let me get to the exceptions. Yes, there are ways to stand out amongst the piles and piles of applications and make a faculty member remember you. How? Simple: talk research. The best way to convince the admissions committee you're ready for a phd is to talk research. Tell us your ideas, what's your vision for your area, what big inevitable trends do you see in the future, and how do you capitalize on them? What are hard problems you've already tried to tackle, and how did you succeed/fail? This is where an applicant can show that they have the clarity of thought to think hard about a real problem, and show the reasoning skills (and intuition for identifying tricky or interesting problems).I'm always excited by the rare applicant who clearly has thought through a research area, and has some ideas and real thoughts about problems he/she wants to tackle. It's fine if the ideas are not likely to succeed, or if the thoughts are not realistic for current research. What matters is that the student showed their logical reasoning skills, and their passion for research at the same time.

Do you think we are watching the rule of law collapse in real time in the US because of Barr?

QuestionDo you think we are watching the rule of law collapse in real time in the US because of Barr?Yes.There will be more of this kind of stuff. NBC on Tuesday night reported that Barr is personally consolidating control of federal legal matters of interest to the president. And Trump on Tuesday night publicly assailed the judge handling Stone's case. We are a very long way from the time when then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch recused herself from Hillary Clinton's email case after she chatted with Bill Clinton on an airport tarmac. The old wisdom was that the appearance of a conflict of interest is the same as an actual conflict. The new wisdom — if it can be called that — is to get away with as much as you possibly can.Trump is generally corrupt, but his attempts to bend the Department of Justice to his will and self-interest are particularly troubling, and will probably do damage that lingers long after he leaves office. Justice — the rule of law — has always been a flawed and fragile concept in America, but it is also one of the foundations on which our democracy rests. "All men are created equal" is a statement of how we are to be treated by the law. Now the president orchestrates special treatment for himself and his cronies and urges punishment for his enemies. Increasingly, the Department of Justice seems willing to go along. In doing so, it loses whatever legitimacy and reputation for fairness it might have had. Right and wrong, legal and illegal are less important than they were a few years ago — what matters most is who has the power, and the will to use it.The rule of law is deadYou have to remember one little thing: Donald Barr, William Barrs father, was good friends with Jeffrey Epstein. Let me see who else do I know that was good friends with Jeffrey Epstein that's relevant at this time.Donald J Trumplestiltskin. The Constitution is on fire people. It's up to us to put it out. Thanks for the a2a.

What is the difference between “shall be” and “should be” in grammar?

“Shall” means it WILL happen. You’re commanding it.“Should” means you want it to happen, but you’re not completely in charge of it.Like this:I SHALL get coffee on my way to work. (I am 100% sure this will happen, because I am in control of it.)The coffee SHOULD taste good. (Since I’m not making it, just buying it, I can’t always control how good it is. Sometimes I get a bad barista.)Also for “should be”:Statement of moral imperative: “Everyone should act responsibly.”Statement of furthering personal interest: “You should invest in XYZ corp.”
