More often than not I hear complete BS about how we survived ! We survived because of sheer sacrifice and bravery . I tell you the tale of one of the great Maratha king Sambhaji (May 14, 1657 – March 11, 1689) .[1][1][1][1]He was was the eldest son of Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire . Maratha empire was largely responsible for defeat of Mughals ! He was not as successful as his father in his short tenure but fought several battles successfully . He was far more pragmatic in his approach than his father .Maratha Empire:[2][2][2][2]Sambhaji :As fate would have it, He was captured alive by forces of Aurangzeb. He was tortured the way which will break the spirit of any mortal. Iron rods were inserted into his eyes. His tongue was cut. His nails were pulled out. He was tied to a pole and anyone of the Aurangzeb’s men would chop out flesh from his body and give it to dog. He was literally skinned alive. All of this was done to him so that he accepts Islam and surrender Maratha empire!What did he do?When Aurangzeb himself asked him to accept Islam after all this torture and he will be spared . He replied that even if you( Aurangzeb) offer your daughter then also he will not accept Islam. He sang praises of Mahadev (Lord Shiva) instead.On March 11, 1689, Sambhaji was finally killed, by tearing him apart from the front and back with ‘Wagh Nakhe’ (‘Tiger claws’, a kind of weapon), and was beheaded with an axe.He died singing the praises of Lord Shiva and Durga ! This is just one account of one many great kings and their sacrifices for Dharma and the reason we survived ! David Sassoon(October 1792 – November 7, 1864)[1][1][1][1] , the merchant of death , the biggest drug peddler history has ever seen ! He has public places named after him in the world. Winners write the history and same is true here . The ugly side of this man which is unknown to most of the people.David Sassoon was born in Baghdad in 1792. Sassoon was from wealthy Jewish family in Baghdad,Iraq and his father was a wealthy banker. They later on moved to Bombay,India due to persecution in Iraq because of, fall of then Baghdad’s governor and there lies the story of one of the biggest drug peddler !British government under Queen Victoria (1819 - 1901) granted several exclusive rights to this family to manufacture cotton goods , silk and most importantly Opium (most addictive drug of it’s time).David Sassoon looked over opium production and it flourished under no time. They forced farmers in North India and in several parts to grow Opium.It was then processed on industrial scale and sold.Picture is of Opium warehouse in Patna,Bihar . [13,000,000 Pounds of Opium Production][2][2][2][2] [3][3][3][3]There were several famines as farmers were forced to grow opium and all the money went to British government.[4][4][4][4]Sassoon found a way to export to several countries like China and Japan. He was always looking for new markets to export opium produced in India.Under no time , He was exporting it to China and importing tea from there. There lies the one of the most tragic history of humankind. The opium trade to China saw a huge rise in between 1830 – 1831 and part of profit went to Queen Victoria.By 1880 Opium trade had skyrocketed to 105,508 chests, making the Sassoons the richest Jews in the world next to the Rothschilds.[5]As the Opium addiction was increasing in China , Manchu Emperor of Qing Dynasty wanted it be stopped in 1839 . This was a huge upset for Sassoons and East India Company . They wanted to continue the trade.David Sassoon demanded that Britain should retaliate against China . Britain attacked China which is termed as ‘First Opium war’ [6][7] to sell opium .This was one of the bloodiest wars Britain fought to have rights to sell drugs to Chinese masses.[8]Britain attacked China and won in 1842 which led to “The Treaty of Nanking”[9] and Hongkong came under British rule for next 99 years and became hub opium trade route to the entire world.Thus began the century of humiliation , impoverishment for China. Britain forced the Chinese to smoke opium and entire Chine was impoverished for the greedy of the few.Chinese soon became addicted to opium which was mainly involuntary as they were forced to smoke.[10][10][10][10]There was something called “command performances” where they would force Chinese to smoke Opium until addiction took over.The following picture shows Chinese being forced to smoke Opium at gunpoint.[11][11][11][11]The Sassoons with help from Britain drugged an entire nation and looted their wealth . Britain’s protected Sassoon opium trade brought death and destruction to millions and still plagues Asia to this day.
