Which countries were powerful in the past but no longer are?

It has to be India.India is the oldest civilization in the world. Spirituality seeps into every facet of Indian life; and down through the ages, India has sent forth the message of peace, love and truth. India’s national flag with its tricolor of deep saffron, white and green clearly conveys India’s commitment and adherence to spiritual values. For the last 4000 years despite invasions, persecution, European Colonialism and political upheaval, the spiritual and social structures that define India’s identity have remained intact. The word “Hindu” comes from the name of the river Indus, which flows 1800 miles from Tibet through Kashmir and Pakistan to the sea. Originally the word “Hindu” was the name that the ancient Persians used to apply to the river Sindhu. Whenever in Sanskrit there is an s in ancient Persian it changes into h, so that Sindhu became Hindu. This word Hindu referred to people living on the other side of the river Indus, regardless of their faith.Historically, the Indus valley civilization (3000 BC to 1500BC) is considered the first civilization in India. This was followed by the Vedic period (1500BC to 500 BC). The Mauryan Empire is the first Indian empire. The Gupta, Pratihara, Pala, Chalukya, Chola, Pandya dynasties followed this. The Muslim period was established in the 9th century and was followed by the arrival of Europeans, mostly British in the 17th century. India attained independence on August 15, 1947.India was known as Sone ki Chidiya (Golden Sparrow). The Indian economy flourished on solid business practices and state of art economic principles of that time. It laid the foundation for India to become the world’s largest economy for long time to come. The following is the position of India in world economy for various time periods after 1 A.D.:Pre Mughal Rule (1AD – 1500AD): India was the world’s largest economy during the years 1 AD and 1000 AD. In 1500 AD India’s economy had a 24.5% share of world income, the second largest in the world after China, which had a 25% share.Mughal Rule (1570-1793): India’s momentum continues. In 1600 AD, India’s income of £17.5 million was greater than the entire treasury of Great Britain in 1800, which totalled £16 million. Perceptible decline starts after 1700.East India Company era (1793-1857): India GDP becomes 40% of China’s GDP. India missed industrial revolution and it slipped further. The British Raj (1860-1947): India’s economy had a 3.8% share of world income in 1952.Until as late as the 17th century AD (land wise just 1.92% of Earth), this small nation’s share in global wealth was more than 25%.Because of the highest concentration of arable land which was developed by shear labour of 2000 generations of our ancestors this less than 2% earth mass and more than quarter of world's wealth; India got the nickname of Sone Ki Chidiya. Now here we have to see the map to understand what the situation just 30 generations ago from today was; by it, we can easily contemplate that present day Africa, Australia and the Americas all together were contributing just 34% towards the global wealth.Image courtesy: India, Part Two: 300-1000 ceThe ancient India looked like this:It included present India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Tibet, Bhutan, the Maldives and Indonesia. You can still find ancient Hinduism in Indonesia. It would be the largest after Russia in terms of land mass.Today’s India is poverty-stricken. But tomorrow’s India will be prosperous. She will be a mighty wave of hope and faith. Her very thought will be stirred with a new vision. Infinite will be the possibilities on her horizon. Her sacrifice will build a more durable foundation for mankind. She will continue within herself nationalism and internationalism, becoming the true symbol of spirituality in action.India, with her spiritual power, will wield a tremendous influence on the future generations. This is no imagination, but vision in operation.– Sri ChinmoyReferences:Madison, Angus (December 6, 2007). Contours of the world economy, 1-2030 AD: essays in macro-economic history. How do you see India in the OIC? What did we gain in the recent OIC meeting?

Are we mad?Just because India has been extended an invitation to attend the conference, and Sushma Swaraj allowed to make a speech as guest of honour, we start hailing it as something ‘holier than thou’ ?What basically OIC is? Organisation of Islamic Cooperation ☪️ !It’s charter aims at preserving ISLAMIC social and economic values; to promote solidarity among its members to increase cooperation in (Islamic) social, cultural, political areas ..... (though later added education, science, etc). And who’re its members? 47 Muslim Majority countries out of total 57; having 1.8 billion population; HQ at Saudi Arabia; founded in 1969. India wanted to join very same year, but rejected on objections by Pakistan on the ground that India was hostile to it.Rather than clamour for joining OIC (as some may want to), I think our aim should be to drift away from any pro-Islamic tilt. We should rather restore the nation back to the pre-42nd Amendment, by removing the word ‘SECULAR’ (and SOCIAL also) from the Constitution which were not what ‘We the People’ had adopted on 26th January 1950. But were added later by Indira Gandhi during Emergency. Illegally changing the very basic structure of our Constitution.I know, we can’t take our nation back to Hindu rashtra, what it de-facto used to be centuries ago; but this’s the bare minimum; to revert to what we intended at the time of Independence. And why should anybody believe that by joining OIC we will make our muslim population feel that India is serving their interest? They too elect members of Parliament and Govt; is that not enough? Govt has not joined any other Hindu or Christian or Sikh body either. And when GOI participates as a guest in OIC, doe it not represent all Indians? Why any extra pampering, or giving a chance to drift towards a religio-cum-communal ideology .... to expose Indians to other Islamic nations to directly interfere and influence? We’re the only Hindu-majority nation on earth (besides small brother Nepal); let’s stay as it is; without further dilution or Islamisation. And one thing; India having been declared a Secular country, can the Govt legitimately seek membership of a purely Islamic Organisation officially?Yes, like Russia, we must secure an ‘Observer’ status. On the ground that 10% of muslim population of the world dwells in India. This would give us an opportunity to stay connected; know what’s happening there, and to put across our point of view on issues like terrorism, oil, political cooperation, business, and development. That’s all. So far India never applied for membership a second time. That was a wise decision.I think the issue is interesting and important. Just expressing my raw feelings, without having seen any informed discussion, for or against. Hence, would be happy if learned friends offer their valuable inputs.

Is India really changing under PM Modi?

On May 26, three years back, India President Pranab Mukherjee (former President of India) administered the oath of office of Prime Minister to Mr Narendra Modi and his cabinet. This was the first time in 30 years that BJP came to absolute power. In Modi’s cabinet, Alot of critcial positions in Cabinets were held by people without or little political background, This was definitely a good indication of fresh mindset and great approach to problem setJust like any governmentAccoladesYemen evacuationThis was one of the >biggest evacuations during the times of war, since the Gulf War I. MoS Gen. (Retd) V.K. Singh personally oversaw the operation. The External Affairs Minister headed by Sushma Swaraj earned laurels for helping the Indians living abroad, be it for >rescuing Kerala nurses from war-torn Libya or >bringing back differently-abled Geeta from Pakistan.Jan Dhan YojanaAnyone can now open an account in a bank, thanks to this financial inclusion scheme. Barely a fortnight after the launch, the yojana >entered the Guiness Book of World Records for the maximum number of accounts opened in a week. The scheme is a big boost in moving towards direct subsidy transfer.LPG subsidy reformsInitially started as a ‘Give It Up’ campaign, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry headed by Dharmendra Pradhan >barred LPG subsidy to customers who earn more than Rs. 10 lakh per annum. The amount saved was used to give over five lakh new LPG connections to those who still use firewoods or kerosene stoves for cooking.Swachh Bharat MissionA pet project of Mr. Modi, sanitation ministry's Swachh Bharat mission got wide public support, especially on social media after celebrities joined the Clean India challenge. Not just stopping with cleaning the locality, the >government has taken initiatives such as building more toilets, waste management and waste segregation. Real success, will however happen, when manual scavenging is completely eradicated.India-Bangladesh land boundary agreementWhen India is facing boundary disputes with every neighbour, this >agreementgives optimism that issues can be amicably solved over diplomacy. The people living in the enclaves that were recently annexed to India even exercised their franchise in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections.Bankruptcy codeAt a time when bankers were grappling with huge rise in non-performing assets and government eyeing to create more entrepreneurs, >the amendment of existing bankruptcy laws was necessary. With the support from Congress, the law was passed in Rajya Sabha during the Budget Session where the ruling party was short of numbers.Real Estate regulationApart from making the process transparent and keeping checks and balances in the form of a Real Estate Regulatory Authority, >the law drafted by Housing Ministry headed by M. Venkaiah Naidu gave confidence to home-buyers. When housing sector contributes to nine per cent of GDP, this law, if effectively implemented by the States, is a game-changer in the housing sector.Yoga DayIndia’s lobbying got success when the United Nations declared June 21 as >International Yoga Day. The mass yoga performance at Rajpath, which was led by Mr. Modi himself, set the record of most number of people participating in such an event.Mann Ki BaatA first such initiative in India where a top leader addresses millions, that too periodically. The programme even >featured U.S. President Barack Obamaduring his visit to India.Digital IndiaThis flagship programme of Ravi Shankar Prasad's Communications Ministry aiming to create a knowledge economy and good governance is travelling in the right path. Every minister and every ministry is now on Twitter. A slew of e-governance measures like digital locker and feedbacks through >mygov.in are some notable initiatives .But Modi’s adminstration also encountered few misses as wellPathankot attackThe attack at IAF air base, just few hours from the National Capital, is the first of its kind after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. There were differences of opinion over the way in which the encounter was handled, Home Minister Rajnath Singh >was kept out of key meetings at the time of attacks and to make things worse, there was confusion over the number if terrorists sneaked in to carry out the attack. The attack raised questions on the security-level at India’s military bases.Masood AzharIndia’s efforts to add the name of Masood Azhar, the chief of JeM, in the UN list of proscribed terrorists >failed as China raised objections to it. This is a major setback to India as Azhar is believed to be behind the Pathankot attack.India-Pak relationsMuch to the hype of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif attending the swearing-in ceremony or the saree diplomacy, both governments >couldn’t re-start the dialogue process nor has the firing across the Line of Control came down. Mr. Modi’s surprise stop-over at Lahore too failed to cut the ice.India-Nepal relationsAnti-India protests flared up in Nepal after trade movements through the border were not allowed for many days. Nepal called it >'India's blockade' as it followed protests by Madhesis. All of these happened within a year of the Himalayan quake, when Nepal thanked India’s help in rescue and rehabilitation. Also, India couldn’t keep away Nepal from moving closer to China.Dissidence in Central UniversitiesSmriti Irani and the Union Ministry of Human Resource and Development was in news for all wrong reasons. The >suicide of a Dalit Research Scholar at Hyderabad Central University, sedition charges against students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, the FTII students’ strike, decision of >not to support off-campus centres of Aligarh Muslim University, closing down Ambedkar-Periyar Study circle in IIT-Madras, the list goes on. And some avoidable controversies such as >competition for schoolchildren on Christmas or >scrapping German being taught at CBSE schools.BlackmoneyBringing back money stashed in off-shore accounts was one of BJP’s poll promises. The government gave a three-month window for compliance, but only 644 declarations were made. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley once >said the bulk of blackmoney is within India, but little has been done to contain the feeders of parallel economy – higher education, real estate and mining.GST Bill/Land ordinanceThe government is unable to pass the >GST Bill in Rajya Sabha for the past two years. Touted as the biggest tax reform in Independent India, the government is unable to bring consensus. Same is the fate of >land bill. Though the Centre took the ordinance route to clear the bill, it was re-promulgated twice and lapsed on August 31, 2015.Uttarakhand fiascoThe pre-mature imposition of President’s Rule in Uttarakhand, and victory of Harish Rawat in the Supreme Court-monitored floor test, is not only an >embarrassment to the ruling government but also to the BJP, whose attempt to gain from dissidence in Uttarakhand Congress misfired.Silence on fringe right-wing groupsLaw and order could be a State subject. Murders of rationalists and attacks on minority community by fringe right-wing elements may not be limited to the BJP-ruled states. But the Centre as well as the Prime Minister’s refrains from condemning or making comments against such attacks didn’t go well with the public.Women’s BillThe >bill seeking one-third representation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies is an almost-forgotten topic now. Cleared in Rajya Sabha in 2010, the Bill is pending in the lower House, in which the BJP front enjoys comfortable majority.Overall sentiment for government is strong and that’s also driven from the fact of weak opposition but Govt can certainly do better on the missing frontsSource: Internet/ Hindu
