How did you decide to take the largest risk you have ever taken?

I knew the layoff was coming. It was the second round of them. The oil company where I worked just wasn’t doing well and had to tighten its belt.(Turns out one of the executive vice presidents was embezzling millions, but that’s a different story.)The first round of layoffs was excruciating because I had to print out and make copies of the layoff notifications. People I knew and liked were losing their jobs, and there was nothing I could do.It caused a ton of work, too - COBRA notices and severance packages and lots of other fun HR stuff. When I heard there was going to be a second round of layoffs, I had a feeling I was going to be part of it.I didn’t know what I would do if it happened. The oil industry is where the jobs are in Houston and lots of companies were laying off at that time, so the job market was a nightmare.A savings account? What’s that? I was a total shopaholic. When my boss called me into her office and gave me the news…I felt elated.Thrilled.She thought I had lost my mind.Everyone else was somber and subdued, but I was so excited to find out what my next adventure would be!I packed up my office and headed home, mind whirling with possibilities. They had given me three months’ salary and a glowing letter of recommendation, so I wasn’t going to starve right away, at least. When I got back to my condo on the 13th floor, I set the box of items from my office on the glass-topped dining table, changed into comfy clothes, and poured a glass of wine.I sat cross-legged in the middle of my bed, grabbed my journal and favorite pen, and asked myself the question that would change my life.If I could do anything in the world right now, what would I do?The answer was instantaneous and visceral. No second-guessing, no hesitation.I would go to Paris.I had dreamed of going to Paris since I was a little girl.Okay, then…how do I make that happen?I started writing. At the top of the page I wrote “I’m going to Paris.”This was surreal, impossible, unthinkable. I was living paycheck-to-paycheck. I certainly didn’t have the funds to pack up and go to Europe!I kept writing.Next it was, “I’m going to stay there for a few months.”What is my hand doing?!? No way is that going to happen!! Hand, you’re crazy! Then I started on my action plan.Over the next two months, I methodically sold virtually everything I owned - furniture, dishes, tchotchkes, truck, most of my clothing and accessories…gradually my condo emptied until I was sleeping on the floor and eating off paper plates.Hours spent online found me an apartment to sublet in Paris just a five minute walk from the Eiffel Tower.I purchased an unlimited three-month Eurail pass and a round-trip plane ticket with a flexible return date. With all these things paid for before I left, the bank account that had been steadily growing as I sold my possessions was pure adventure money.I was living as frugally as I possibly could because I knew that every penny I spent now was a penny I wouldn’t have in Paris.Somehow I got out of my condo’s lease (I still don’t remember how - those two months are a blur!) and spent my last few nights in the U.S. on a friend’s sofa. The night before I left, I watched the series finale of Sex and the City - totally serendipitous timing. Seeing Carrie arrive in Paris, I sobbed in excitement and nervous anticipation. Finally the day came. As I boarded the plane I grinned, knowing that if I could do anything in the world, it would be exactly what I was doing at that moment. For more about the adventure:Kittie Rayborn's answer to What is something you’ve done that most people haven’t?Kittie Rayborn's answer to How is the experience of travelling solo?Kittie Rayborn's answer to How does it feel to travel alone?Kittie Rayborn's answer to What strikes first time visitors as special or unusual when they arrive in Paris?

How can I prepare myself for a degree in Supply Chain Management?

Your personal network and previous work experience will be THE MAJOR factor in getting your foot in the door in the supply chain industry. If you are currently a student, I’d STRONGLY RECOMMEND finding as many internships and part time jobs that you can within the industry. These will be absolutely key in building your network and likely having a job waiting when you graduate. The academic work is also important as many times your professors will have industry connections and be a great source of referrals or letters of recommendations, so your grades and class performance will be important in this regard.Keep in mind the supply chain industry is literally 10% of global GDP and encompasses nearly every niche and potential area of expertise. Supply chain companies not only hire supply chain management degrees, but also hire many many engineers - electrical, software, mechanical and systems, finance experts, sales and marketing experts, legal and contract professionals, human resource personnel and many more. Hence even if you don’t major in supply chain you likely could find a good job in the industry. For those focused on actual supply chain management, you could work for a shipper such as Apple etc managing their movement of goods, or you could work for a logistics provider. Logistics providers can be all manner of different types of companies ranging from 3PLs such as XPO, to trucking companies like JB Hunt, to railroads like BNSF, freight forwarding companies, warehousing companies, ocean freight companies like Maersk, or even tech startups within the industry like Zmodal or Flexport. It really comes down to what YOU ARE DRIVEN to do and what you are interested in. Supply chain jobs can require a lot of weekend and holiday hours, and be very stressful at times when solving major problems that have unexpectedly popped up. BUT it is a very rewarding field, that can offer great pay, benefits and be incredibly fascinating with the opportunity to visit many interesting places.Just make sure to ALWAYS BE BUILDING your personal network. Throughout your career your network will be incredibly important.

Have you ever experienced racism in the USA?

Yes. I graduated from college in a period similar to 2008. I traveled all over the Southeast looking for a job. I was 27 and had real world experience including leading crews, good grades, and letters of recommendation from my professors. I went in several offices and talked to many owners and HR people. I was told, in varying degrees of subtlety, that they would hire me if I wasn't a white male. All of them were under fire from Affirmative Action to hire women and minorities. The problem is, while there was and is a disparity, not very many people period take the science path and fewer still have experience. Most are Asian, Indian, and white men, especially at that time. I realize this is small potatoes compared to the other races but it does exist. I still remember a crusty old guy with a wall full of degrees and certifications asking me what the item in my resume stating that I was experienced with surveying instruments meant. I told him that I would be eligible to take the LSIT exam that year and the PLS six months after I passed that. He started calling around trying to find a temporary place for me until he could clear his quota problem. I had already been to most of them. He finally turned to me with, no joke, tears in his eyes and said “I could tell you get your boots and be at my Superfund site in New Orleans after the Fourth of July”. I informed him my bags and boots were in my truck in his parking lot and it was about a 2 hour ride from his office in Mobile, Alabama. Unfortunately, he would lose his 8 figure contract if he hired me. That was July 2, 1983 and, after busting skull to get my degree, I came back home and got a job as assistant surveyor on a bridge project and returned to my father's surveying company when one of his chiefs quit. I had vowed not to do that but I had little choice. I've never practiced geology. This was similar to Obamacare-laudable intentions with unforeseen consequences, at least by the advocates.
