In spite of the deep economic and social impacts of the Modi Government's major policy decisions, people don't criticise him. In fact, they are praising him[1].And this is a very unique situation where the credit for positive results goes to PM Modi but the blame for negative results don't.[2]So many Political journalists and experts have claimed that “PM Modi has developed a Teflon image”.[3]Teflon image is a term used frequently in political science. Teflon is a chemical compound that is used in nonstick frying pans. Every leader, political or non-political could be placed somewhere on this scale.Experts believe that PM Modi is on the Teflon side of this scale. As a result, the deep impact on the Indian economy due to COVID-19 might have very little effect on PM Modi's political ambitions. The main reason behind this is —PM Modi is not just a political leader. He is, almost, a spiritual leader too.Teflon and “Spiritual”On November 8th, 2016, PM Modi announced that ₹500 & ₹1000 notes will be withdrawn. After one month, a similar turn of events happened in Venezuela too. President Nicolas Maduro had announced that he was cancelling 100- Bolivar currency notes as those notes were in the possession of the Mafia.However, just after he announced that those notes would not be considered legal tender in 3 days, people came on roads to protest against this decision.[5]But no such protests were seen in India.Rather, people supported this decision.Even after realising the fact that Demonetization neither brought black money nor infiltration under control and even other objectives of the government weren't fulfilled, not many people criticised this decision. Rather they made statements like, “At least he is trying”.This was the first indication of Narendra Modi's Teflon image.[6]Researchers feel that such leaders have some common traits. They are seen as extroverted and outgoing which appeals to voters. But this definition solely cannot explain Narendra Modi's Teflon image. There are many reasons for this image such as Nationalism[7], Hindu Majoritarianism[8], control over media[9], financial advantage[10]and a weak opposition.[11]Let's first take a look at what forms his Teflon image has taken.A spiritual leaderWe had witnessed a weird form of it when PM Modi decided to meditate in some cave in Kedarnath after campaigning. As always, Media was really interested in this.This was a point which showed that PM Modi's image is not just of a political leader but of a spiritual leader as well.Hence, aspects which could weaken the career of any other normal political leader, like economic slowdown, were not having any impact of Modi's image.LanguageA research showed that even the way Narendra Modi uses the Hindi language is, in a way, responsible for his spiritual image. His choice of words, especially, is worth noticing.[12]For instance, to describe the problems of migrant workers, he used the words, “Tyaag(Sacrifice)”, “Tapasya(Penance)” and “Agni pariksha(Trial by fire)”.PM Modi uses many religious texts in his speeches as well. And these little things help in building his spiritual image.[13]The Benjamin Franklin EffectBenjamin Franklin used an important tool in his political career which is now called the Benjamin Franklin effect.[14]This can be found in PM Modi's speeches as well.[15]According to his effect, if you ask for a favour from someone and he/she accepts then the chances of him/her accepting a second favour increase comprehensively and it also increases the chances of that person liking you more. This happens in our brain due to a cognitive dissonance.Whenever Narendra Modi makes an announcement, he doesn't give an order or instruction, but he asks for a favour, a request.Through such appeals and requests, he can reap 2 benefits — Firstly, it instantly increases his likeablilty as per the Franklin effect. Secondly, many responsibilities shift from the Government to the citizens[16]. So even if a policy scheme fails, the government won't be the only one responsible for it.Maybe only to disassociate himself from the results, many a time, PM Modi doesn't give the full details of any certain scheme and its working. For example, in his infamous “Aatmnirbhar” speech, he focused on the number 20 Lakh crore package, and the responsibilities of disclosing the details were handed out to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman.Because of this, when the performance of Government is criticised, that criticism is not directed towards PM Modi. Rather, it gets directed towards his Council of Ministers.FaithNilanjan Sarkar, a political scientist, claimed in his recent paper that for 2014 elections, PM Modi relied on development (vikaas). Whereas, in 2019 elections he was more relied on trust (vishwaas).[17]Just before the 2019 elections, Rural India had seen an agricultural crisis. In 2019, BJP’s rural vote share increased as well. Sarkar argues, if the 2019 elections would have been just about the development, then people wouldn't have voted in favour of the BJP.And Narendra Modi's spiritual image explains this trust(Vishwaas) on him.Is This Teflon Image Permanent?Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was the 4th president of Iran. He was also called “Teflon Mullah”.[18]In the 1980s, he was involved in a secret deal with Iran's biggest enemy — America. Even after this information got leaked in the public, his image remained intact.[19]He was Iran's most vicious and aggressive political leader. After the death of Ruhollah Khomeni in 1989, he became a leading political figure. And his influence was so great that people used to call him “King Akbar”.Only in 2005, in spite of being a front runner, he lost the elections to Mohmoud Ahmadinjenad, who was still a little known political leader.[20]There was no specific reason for his defeat. A collapse in the economy and the lavish lifestyle of Rafsanjani & his family contributed to this defeat.But some experts say, there was one major reason and it was that “he promised too much but couldn't deliver”.[21]A lot of people might be familiar with this statement. In the last 6 years, PM Modi has made many promises.Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s economy was on a downward trend. After COVID19, it is predicted that India's growth would be negative.[22]But it doesn't mean, PM Modi will have to repay a political cost, because of it. This is due to his Teflon image. But this image is also not permanent, as we had seen in Rafsanjani's example.And a change in this image won't happen with just 1 setback. It'd need multiple factors such as a better opposition or a serious policy mistake by the PM.An ideal political environment is not one where all leaders are on the velcro side of the scale. Instead, they should be somewhere in the middle of this scale.To do this, their supporters will have to start criticising them for the decisions they are responsible for. Each region however does encompass an English territory.Dorne, which could easily resemble Gascony since Gascony once was under English fealty during the Angevin Empire, and Dorne of course is initially loyal to the Iron Throne under Robert Baratheon, a usurper of the Mad King (just as Henry IV usurped the throne from Richard II, a mentally unstable king). Most importantly, Gascony was famous for its wine and the sunny Mediterranean culture. Geographically however, Dorne would be located in Britain's Cornwall area, although the culture is clearly incompatible.The North corresponds to Northumbria/Yorkshire (where the Yorks once seated at York, resembling how the Starks once were seated at Winterfell). Hadrian's wall to the north of England easily set the standard for the North. The land, encompassing almost half of Westeros, would therefore geographically encompass Scotland during its Wars of Independence (during the first half of the 14th century), therefore having Mance Rayder's gathering as an allusion to William Wallace's rebellion. Since it is said Westeros would be the size of South America some areas were distended, resulting the inclusion of Scotland (up to the Antonine wall, in this case). In fact, Yesnaby, a castle by the cliffs in Orkney, is similar to that of Pyke. Location-wise it is best represented by the Isle of Man, though it is a single island rather than an archipelago and has been under Viking influence for a considerably shorter time. *As Man is not part of the UK, in the map above it is replaced by Northern Ireland*The Vale would then represent Wales. Considering Dorne geographically (but not culturally) represents Cornwall, which is in the East of Westeros, rather than in the West as is Cornwall, the same happens to the Vale, which means the map of Westeros is not only Britain expanded (Martin stated his Westeros is the size of South America) as it is flipped as well. Also, its names are only two letters apart (W becomes a V and an S is added). More importantly, Wales has a toponomy similar to the Vale, as it is very mountainous and its coast is full of peninsulas similar to the Vale's 'fingers'. The Isle of Anglesey is an example (it only separated from the mainland by the Menai straight's tidal water, therefore making it at times a peninsula). Other examples include the Llŷn peninsula, Pembokeshire (not officially a peninsula, but it is surrounded by water in three sides) and the Gowe peninsula (equivalent to the Little Finger as it is the smallest), to name a few.In the case of Essos (parallel to continental Europe):Valyria is Rome, which at the time of the War of the Roses was a ruin of its former self, as Valyria (now a ruin) was also the capital of an Empire (the Valyrian Freehold). Most Essosi (and a lesser extent, Westerosi) have some Valyrian origins, just as Romans have contributed to the European gene pool by conquering and intermarrying, especially in Latin countries which are analogous in the series;Braavos is Venice as both are merchant cities that have been built on islands and are connected through stone bridges. They also share the same history of previously indirect Valyrian (Roman) oppression. It is geographically similar, being an archipelago built on a lagoon. It has an arsenal, just as Venice had, which used to be heavily fortified in Venice's golden years (which corresponded the time of the War of the Roses). Also, Braavos is ruled by a sealord, just as the Venetian doges used to cerimonially marry the sea 'la Serenissima' upon their acession. Nonetheless, the Braavosi bank is parallel to the Medici bank in Florence.Pentos loosely corresponds to Florence/Pisa/Genoa as the city used to be the largest northernmost large city-colony of Valyria. Although Florence, Genoa and Pisa definitely weren't the northernmost, a great majority of the Roman citizens lived south of the Tuscany-Liguria region along the Mediterranean. Pisa and Florence hold impressive Duomos corresponding to the Red Temple and have square brick towers around the city (such as Florence and Genoa). Also, the houses had red tiles such as those of Florence and Pisa. Myr speaks High Valyrian which also means the language (Occitan French) would be derived from a previous Valyrian (Roman/Latin) dialect. Occitan was known for its etymological similarity with Latin and Italian .Tyrosh, famous for its pear brandy and greedy inhabitants would be Lisbon or Porto, with a bastard form of High Valyrian (Portuguese as it is similar to French and Portuguese royalty originally came from France). Although Tyrosh probably indicates the Azores for its archipelago geography, the culture is set in Portuguese standards, as Portugal is famous for its pears and wine (which blended into the "pear brandy" concept). Also, the Portuguese mercantilism, slave trade and colonial expansion the years after the War of the Roses make their 'greedy' reputation similar to that of the inhabitants of Tyrosh.Lys is Paris as it is known for its sensual arts and pleasure-houses. Late Mediaeval/Early Renaissance Paris was renowned for its courtesans and hedonistic environment. One example is how Anne Boleyn seduced Henry VIII with courtly skills taught to her in the Parisian court.Volantis, being an old seaside port, formerly Valyrian colony would mostly resemble Naples as it has an immense crescent-shaped harbour (which could engulf all of Braavos/Venice) like the Gulf of Naples. Naples and Rome also held the closest ties in the Republic's time, just as Volantis and Valyria held amongst all the other Valyrian colonies. Volantis also happens to be efficiently walled and fortified like Naples. Also, Talisa, the Queen of the North, was formerly from Volantis and thus spoke Valyrian, which would correspond to the Italian spoken in Naples. Also, it is said that Volantis is within a region disputed by Lys, Myr (both cities being France), and Tyrosh (which in this case corresponds to Spain albeist its true identity is the neighbouring Portugal- as mentioned before). This fact parallels how Spain and France fought for the control of the Two Sicilies, a land whose capital and major city was Naples.Lorath, being distant and isolated, is Novgorod/Arkhangelsk for the same reasons. It is also said that the Ibbenese (Innuit-like peoples) traded whale products with Lorath just as whale products were prevalent in Novgorod's economy as the Republic of Novgorod held access through Arkhangelsk to the Arctic Sea (a.k.a Shivering Sea in the novels/series) where Beluga whales are found. Location-wise, Arkhangelsk would be a more prominent counterpart.Norvos is a mercantile city that pays tributes to the Dothraki and uses bears as a form of entertainment. It is located on the Noyne river. This is an allusion to Moscow, a city by the Muskovy river which once payed tribute to the Golden Horde/Mongols and contained a multitude of bears in the peripherical region, which bore its coat of arms, featuring a bear in a field of rouge.Qohor, being furthest from the Narrow Sea and famed for the blacksmiths would resemble the Ukrainian Rus' peoples, of Nordic descent. The Nordic Vikings were experts in swordmaking, but had access to the sea, so the landlocked Kiev would be a better option for Qohor.Yunkai is Luxor/Thebes. Primarily, there are two pyramids within the city walls in these two locations. Also the Yunkai'i ruler Razdal mo Eraz stated "Ancient and glorious is Yunkai. Our empire was old before dragons stirred in Old Valyria." This is a reference to the Egyptian Empire and its age when Rome was rising.Meereen, also having pyramids, except three instead of two, and also withholding larger and more "residential" style, would correspond to Cairo/Giza.Astapor is Babylon/Baghdad. Babylon was a very ancient city as is Astapor, and both centres involve in (miitary) slave trade as Astapor does. Also, the gate resembles the Gate of Ishtar with the "crumbling statue" upon it.Ghis would be a double analogy for Greece/Carthage. Historically, it was the nemesis of Valyria, and five wars were waged upon Ghis for Valyrian supremacy. There were only three Punic wars, yet there were two additional campaigns launched by Phyrrhus, the king of Epirus (by then the most influential Hellenic in the Balkans) against Rome AND Carthage as they were distracted with each other. Rome effectively destroyed and annexed both Carthage and Greece in the conclusion of the Punic/Pyrrhic wars. This would be George R. R. Martin’s way of simplifying the analogous context. Ghis’s location across the sea, east of Valyria is similar to that of Epirus, which now covers Northwestern Greece and Albania.Vaes Dothrak corresponds to Karakorum. The capital of the Mongol khans' (khals) realm, it consisted mostly of huts and marketplaces, isolated from other cities by arid steppes. It now lays in ruins.Qarth is Constantinople. This is evident as both cities are immensely wealthy by trade and located in straights where various mercantile ships pass. The Mediterranean (which is today climatically a synonym for warm and summer-like) and the Black seas are lexically symbolised by the Summer and Jade seas, which both cities encompass. Also, Constantinople was the largest city of the world at its heyday. Qarth also is said to be larger than any city in Westeros and any Free City. Both cities also had been walled several times.YiTi serves as a parallel to China. It is located in the Eastern confines of Essos much like China (in the Eurasian ‘'Far East’'). YiTi borders Jogos Nhai to the North, which would be the Mongolian homeland. Much like China’s great wall outposts, YiTi’s emperors established Five Forts to guard from Northern raiders. YiTi has a rich history, with a successive list of Empires and mythological sovereign rulers (similar to China). Politically, YiTi is ruled by authoritarian god-emperors, as did China.Leng is across the sea from YiTi, as Japan is from China/Korea. Leng was historically inhabited by a tall , bright-eyed people called Lengii, a group that still predominates the Southern third of the isle. However, YiTi migrants established a dominant ruling society, much like the Yayoi-descent Japanese (which originated in southern China, crossing the landbridge covering Taiwan) unified a government in the southern half of Japan, expanding northwards and leaving the original Ainu inhabitants to the Northern third.Regarding characters, Game of Thrones mashes many of the English historical figures in each character, for more in-depth storytelling and to avoid blatant similarities. The timeframe is somewhat fixed (late Mediaeval), yet a couple of allusions happen in an earlier period. Examples are:Danaerys Targaryen is Empress Matilda. They both are almost identically portrayed in history. Danaerys traces her lineage to Aegon the Conqueror (an epitaph of William the Conqueror). Both have brothers who die leaving them in a succession crisis.The Targaryens also happen to have a Nordic appearance yet speak by birth a Roman tongue, which was not only what the novels portray as Valyrian as history has taught us the de Normandie spoke Latin/French and were previously Viking settlers. Daenerys also was the object of a distant unorthodox marriage at 14 with the Khalasar of the Dothraki, similarly to Matilda's marriage to Henry V of the Holy Roman Empire. Also, both female figures had to amass armies in order to return home and claim victory with their offspring as a motivation. Interestingly both had three children whose firstborn (or largest in Daenerys's case) was the hardest to tame. A more persistent allusion to Queen Matilda in Westerosi history, however, was the Queen Rhaenyra, as she participated in the Dance of the Dragons, the Westerosi parallel to the Anarchy in England, where two members fought for the throne and conclusively the female claimant had her son installed as king.Robert Baratheon is both Henry VII and Henry VIII, with Henry VII sharing parallels to both Tyrion Lannister and Ramsay Snow. Henry VII conquered the throne of England as Robert Baratheon did to the Iron Throne. Tudor was through his mother a Beaufort, and thus a Lancastrian through the bastard line. He made himself legitimate by two decrees: he petitioned the pope for 'rights of conquest' meaning he could be king anyway and he then legitimised the Beaufort line by stating that since John of Gaunt married Swynford after the children's births, they might as well be legitimised (which is very arbitrary). Consequentially, since Henry VII was essentially of bastardised Lancastrian lineage with no claim and then married the Yorkist princess Elizabeth by force and will of his family interests, he is a fusion of both the characters of Tyrion and Ramsay Bolton, as Tyrion is a Lannister and Ramsay is a bastard made legitimate, both marrying the Stark princess Sansa (not canon). Robert parallels as Henry VII (together with his son)- since he also mourned the loss of his dutiful, but detached Yorkist wife, such as Robert's loss of Lyanna as she was also detached but dutiful to the betrothal (to the point of hiding Jon Snow from him). In turn, both Lyanna and Sansa can be connected to Elizabeth of York's historical figure. So, interestingly, these three characters can be tie into Henry VII’s role, yet Tyrion and Ramsay's links belong to the stage of his life when Henry was his mother's political pawn, and Robert links to his kingship, and particularly that of his eponymous son (Henry VIII)- a young, handsome, chivalrous nights who was somewhat of a Don Giovanni and grew to become a bloated and hedonistic tyrant.Cersei Lannister is both a representation of Margaret of Anjou as well as Isabella of Anjou. Both historic French queens in England are said to have committed adultery. Whilst Margaret of Anjou's case is based in rumour, Margaret was involved directly in the War of the Roses against the Yorks by using her son as a casus belli, just as Cersei manages to wage war against the northern Starks claiming they have betrayed Joffrey. Joffrey is also very much alike Margaret's son, the Lancastrian Prince Edward, which became tyrannical and had sadomasochist hobbies in his teens, and was rumoured to be a bastard child of Edmund Beaufort, a royal commander (just as Joffrey is rumoured to be the son of Jaime, member of the Kingsguard. In the case of Isabella, both her and Cersei were forced to endure a loveless marriage with a King who loved another (While Robert Baratheon flaunted mistresses and bastards in King's Landing, Edward II had male favourites in his court, which brings parallel to Robert's brother, Renly Baratheon). Both Cersei and Isabella's personal policies resulted in a civil war and strived to reign through their son (much like Margaret during the War of the Roses), under their influence which quickly diminished once both Kings attained the age of majority. Given Margaret's case above, when regarding each house, it is clear that the Lannisters are the Lancastrians, since both houses are wealthy, come from the Western portion of the realm, and bear red sigils.Robb Stark is Edward of York, as both houses (York and Stark) come from the Northern part of the realm, bear white sigils and are known for bravery in conquest. His father's (Ned's) execution matches the murder of Richard of York. Also, Richard is similar to Rickard, Ned's father's name. Edward's disadvantageous marriage to a rather lowly-born Lady Elizabeth Woodville (which caused many to eventually turn up against him) is equivalent to Talisa Maegyr/Jeyne Westerling's union with Robb . Catelyn's guidance over her children matched the manner in which Cecily York (née Neville) treated her own kin. Bran and Rickon are parallel to The Princes in the Tower in Season 2, when their adoptive brother Theon Greyjoy usurped Winterfell as in 1483 the princes' biological uncle Richard of York was granted the ward of the princes and the kingdom.The Tyrells are the Stanleys. Both houses, in literature and History switched sides shaping history's course. The Stanleys were loyal to Richard III initially although Margaret Beaufort (which could also be a lesser comparison of Cersei), Henry Tudor's Lancastrian mother, just wed Thomas Stanley, making the Stanleys become strategically supporters of the Lancastrian (Tudor) cause. This mirror Loras's betrothal to Cersei. Interestingly, Thomas Stanley was the earl of Derby, in the Midlands, which I previously stated as a counterpart to The Reach (ruled by the Tyrells). The Arbor, which is part of The Reach, is The Isle of Man's equivalent in context. At the time, Thomas Stanley was King of the Isle of Man (and Loras's father the ruler of The Arbor in the series).Margaery Tyrell, in the latest sequence of events, can be drawn to Lady Jane Grey, and by extension, Cersei represents Queen Mary I of England. It is absolutely certain that it comes to Tommen being linked Edward VII, as he was feeble and overruled by the interests of his mother's family. Some people said that this is his fault to spread the wrong caption (I don’t think that is important). Someone said he edited the video (he only cut it, but the the video itself doesn’t change). Yes because of him, people only watch 13 seconds of that 6000 seconds out of context, the video went viral without context, in addition with wrong caption. He only guilty for provoking people. Rizieq, FPI, etc is also guilty for provoking people anywhere until there are many demonstration, rallies 411, 212, 55 etc (Yes I stand by this argument). But it doesn’t change the substance of Ahok statement on the video itself . Many people watch it directly from Pemprov DKI youtube account (not from Buni Yani, me myself include there) and Ahok word is still there. The Ahok word is perceived trouble from beginning because there are bad verb associated with Al Maidah like “dibodohi” “dibohongi” etc. Even there are miscommunication on ‘pakai’ word, It doesn’t change Ahok own word on video and it still offensive to some people. The forensic expert on court (AKBP Muhammad Nuh) using the original video from Pemprov DKI storage, not from Buni Yani. As another believer, I think it best for him that He should avoid it from beginning, because in Indonesia which literacy-rate is still small, many interpretation and speculation can happen to his own word. So, I can’t blame people who said Ahok is the one who started this. In communication theory, Ahok is the communicator, Buni Yani just the messenger.
