Why are most people so obsessed with Modi?

In spite of the deep economic and social impacts of the Modi Government's major policy decisions, people don't criticise him. In fact, they are praising him[1].And this is a very unique situation where the credit for positive results goes to PM Modi but the blame for negative results don't.[2]So many Political journalists and experts have claimed that “PM Modi has developed a Teflon image”.[3]Teflon image is a term used frequently in political science. Teflon is a chemical compound that is used in nonstick frying pans. Teflon leaders are those leaders to whom criticism never sticks to, no matter how much they are criticised.[4]On the other hand, there are velcro leaders on whom even the slightest form of criticism sticks to their image. Every leader, political or non-political could be placed somewhere on this scale.Experts believe that PM Modi is on the Teflon side of this scale. As a result, the deep impact on the Indian economy due to COVID-19 might have very little effect on PM Modi's political ambitions. The main reason behind this is —PM Modi is not just a political leader. He is, almost, a spiritual leader too.Teflon and “Spiritual”On November 8th, 2016, PM Modi announced that ₹500 & ₹1000 notes will be withdrawn. After one month, a similar turn of events happened in Venezuela too. President Nicolas Maduro had announced that he was cancelling 100- Bolivar currency notes as those notes were in the possession of the Mafia. However, just after he announced that those notes would not be considered legal tender in 3 days, people came on roads to protest against this decision.[5]But no such protests were seen in India.Rather, people supported this decision.Even after realising the fact that Demonetization neither brought black money nor infiltration under control and even other objectives of the government weren't fulfilled, not many people criticised this decision. Rather they made statements like, “At least he is trying”.This was the first indication of Narendra Modi's Teflon image.[6]Researchers feel that such leaders have some common traits. They are seen as extroverted and outgoing which appeals to voters. But this definition solely cannot explain Narendra Modi's Teflon image. There are many reasons for this image such as Nationalism[7], Hindu Majoritarianism[8], control over media[9], financial advantage[10]and a weak opposition.[11]Let's first take a look at what forms his Teflon image has taken.A spiritual leaderWe had witnessed a weird form of it when PM Modi decided to meditate in some cave in Kedarnath after campaigning. As always, Media was really interested in this. This was a point which showed that PM Modi's image is not just of a political leader but of a spiritual leader as well.Hence, aspects which could weaken the career of any other normal political leader, like economic slowdown, were not having any impact of Modi's image.LanguageA research showed that even the way Narendra Modi uses the Hindi language is, in a way, responsible for his spiritual image. His choice of words, especially, is worth noticing.[12]For instance, to describe the problems of migrant workers, he used the words, “Tyaag(Sacrifice)”, “Tapasya(Penance)” and “Agni pariksha(Trial by fire)”.PM Modi uses many religious texts in his speeches as well. And these little things help in building his spiritual image.[13]The Benjamin Franklin EffectBenjamin Franklin used an important tool in his political career which is now called the Benjamin Franklin effect.[14]This can be found in PM Modi's speeches as well.[15]According to his effect, if you ask for a favour from someone and he/she accepts then the chances of him/her accepting a second favour increase comprehensively and it also increases the chances of that person liking you more. This happens in our brain due to a cognitive dissonance.Whenever Narendra Modi makes an announcement, he doesn't give an order or instruction, but he asks for a favour, a request.Through such appeals and requests, he can reap 2 benefits — Firstly, it instantly increases his likeablilty as per the Franklin effect. Secondly, many responsibilities shift from the Government to the citizens[16]. So even if a policy scheme fails, the government won't be the only one responsible for it.Maybe only to disassociate himself from the results, many a time, PM Modi doesn't give the full details of any certain scheme and its working. For example, in his infamous “Aatmnirbhar” speech, he focused on the number 20 Lakh crore package, and the responsibilities of disclosing the details were handed out to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman.Because of this, when the performance of Government is criticised, that criticism is not directed towards PM Modi. Rather, it gets directed towards his Council of Ministers.FaithNilanjan Sarkar, a political scientist, claimed in his recent paper that for 2014 elections, PM Modi relied on development (vikaas). Whereas, in 2019 elections he was more relied on trust (vishwaas).[17]Just before the 2019 elections, Rural India had seen an agricultural crisis. In 2019, BJP’s rural vote share increased as well. Sarkar argues, if the 2019 elections would have been just about the development, then people wouldn't have voted in favour of the BJP.And Narendra Modi's spiritual image explains this trust(Vishwaas) on him.Is This Teflon Image Permanent?Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was the 4th president of Iran. He was also called “Teflon Mullah”.[18]In the 1980s, he was involved in a secret deal with Iran's biggest enemy — America. Even after this information got leaked in the public, his image remained intact.[19]He was Iran's most vicious and aggressive political leader. After the death of Ruhollah Khomeni in 1989, he became a leading political figure. And his influence was so great that people used to call him “King Akbar”.Only in 2005, in spite of being a front runner, he lost the elections to Mohmoud Ahmadinjenad, who was still a little known political leader.[20]There was no specific reason for his defeat. A collapse in the economy and the lavish lifestyle of Rafsanjani & his family contributed to this defeat. But some experts say, there was one major reason and it was that “he promised too much but couldn't deliver”.[21]A lot of people might be familiar with this statement. In the last 6 years, PM Modi has made many promises.Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s economy was on a downward trend. After COVID19, it is predicted that India's growth would be negative.[22]But it doesn't mean, PM Modi will have to repay a political cost, because of it. This is due to his Teflon image. But this image is also not permanent, as we had seen in Rafsanjani's example. And a change in this image won't happen with just 1 setback. It'd need multiple factors such as a better opposition or a serious policy mistake by the PM.An ideal political environment is not one where all leaders are on the velcro side of the scale. Instead, they should be somewhere in the middle of this scale. To do this, their supporters will have to start criticising them for the decisions they are responsible for. And their, oppositions will have to stop criticising them for the decisions, these leaders were not responsible for.Maybe then, we would see a change in this spiritual image of Modi. You may also read: Gaurav Jha's answer to Is there anything which can unite India?Footnotes[1] https://youtu.be/el7jeVqkKbw[2] In coaching hub Kota, future job-seekers say unemployment is not Modi govt’s fault[3] https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqa0MtMGQyRWNZY2tjNFUxb2lsOGNfaGl2NnJsd3xBQ3Jtc0tudmpvdm9Ra3B3SlE0V1V3WWlvZUpCUFRmM0tOSzRTSkNfUWNKeXZzbVA3RUVWRG9DT0pScTVzNDRRX1ZIMDdib2syWXU1aHNneGh5VjByUWM5MWtyY0g1NlBMRnc4RkpfbFRpSXJxOFFZN2hkU25qaw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tandfonline.com%2Fdoi%2Fpdf%2F10.1080%2F15377850802005083&html_redirect=1[4] Modi faces no political costs for suffering he causes. What historical parallels or allusions are there in “Game of Thrones”? Are there any societies, countries, or political sagas that it’s based on or similar to?

Electoral divisions of the UK as the Seven Kingdoms of WesterosCulturally, Westeros is definitely Britain with the exception of Dorne. Each region however does encompass an English territory.Dorne, which could easily resemble Gascony since Gascony once was under English fealty during the Angevin Empire, and Dorne of course is initially loyal to the Iron Throne under Robert Baratheon, a usurper of the Mad King (just as Henry IV usurped the throne from Richard II, a mentally unstable king). Most importantly, Gascony was famous for its wine and the sunny Mediterranean culture. Geographically however, Dorne would be located in Britain's Cornwall area, although the culture is clearly incompatible. The North corresponds to Northumbria/Yorkshire (where the Yorks once seated at York, resembling how the Starks once were seated at Winterfell). Hadrian's wall to the north of England easily set the standard for the North. The land, encompassing almost half of Westeros, would therefore geographically encompass Scotland during its Wars of Independence (during the first half of the 14th century), therefore having Mance Rayder's gathering as an allusion to William Wallace's rebellion. Since it is said Westeros would be the size of South America some areas were distended, resulting the inclusion of Scotland (up to the Antonine wall, in this case). Although the Wall is an allusion to Hadrian's wall, which was much more heavily fortified than the Antonine wall, its location further north implies the location of the Antonine wall.Yorkshire, for example, is not only the North, as the Riverlands (although the Riverland would only represent the East and West Ridings of Yorkshire- the southernmost counties). This occurs as the Trident would be the river Ouse as it splits in three and is a tributary of the Humber estuary in the East. The Trident also happens to flow from the East. The Westerlands would undoubtedly be Lancastershire, the ancestral home of the Lancasters- whom happen to be represented by the Lannisters in the series. The Reach would then be the Midlands with the geographical commonalities of a vast plain with a long river containing several tributaries (the River Severn in Britain's case- river Mander in Westeros). The peninsular area of Storm's End corresponds to East Anglia (and perhaps Kent). The Iron Isles would probably correspond to the Orkney Isles with a fiercely Viking culture, just as the Orkney belonged to the Kingdom of Norway from 875 to 1468, in which it became part of Scotland (geographically represented by the North). In fact, Yesnaby, a castle by the cliffs in Orkney, is similar to that of Pyke. Location-wise it is best represented by the Isle of Man, though it is a single island rather than an archipelago and has been under Viking influence for a considerably shorter time. *As Man is not part of the UK, in the map above it is replaced by Northern Ireland*The Vale would then represent Wales. Considering Dorne geographically (but not culturally) represents Cornwall, which is in the East of Westeros, rather than in the West as is Cornwall, the same happens to the Vale, which means the map of Westeros is not only Britain expanded (Martin stated his Westeros is the size of South America) as it is flipped as well. Also, its names are only two letters apart (W becomes a V and an S is added). More importantly, Wales has a toponomy similar to the Vale, as it is very mountainous and its coast is full of peninsulas similar to the Vale's 'fingers'. The Isle of Anglesey is an example (it only separated from the mainland by the Menai straight's tidal water, therefore making it at times a peninsula). Other examples include the Llŷn peninsula, Pembokeshire (not officially a peninsula, but it is surrounded by water in three sides) and the Gowe peninsula (equivalent to the Little Finger as it is the smallest), to name a few.In the case of Essos (parallel to continental Europe):Valyria is Rome, which at the time of the War of the Roses was a ruin of its former self, as Valyria (now a ruin) was also the capital of an Empire (the Valyrian Freehold). Most Essosi (and a lesser extent, Westerosi) have some Valyrian origins, just as Romans have contributed to the European gene pool by conquering and intermarrying, especially in Latin countries which are analogous in the series;Braavos is Venice as both are merchant cities that have been built on islands and are connected through stone bridges. They also share the same history of previously indirect Valyrian (Roman) oppression. It is geographically similar, being an archipelago built on a lagoon. It has an arsenal, just as Venice had, which used to be heavily fortified in Venice's golden years (which corresponded the time of the War of the Roses). Also, Braavos is ruled by a sealord, just as the Venetian doges used to cerimonially marry the sea 'la Serenissima' upon their acession. Nonetheless, the Braavosi bank is parallel to the Medici bank in Florence.Pentos loosely corresponds to Florence/Pisa/Genoa as the city used to be the largest northernmost large city-colony of Valyria. Although Florence, Genoa and Pisa definitely weren't the northernmost, a great majority of the Roman citizens lived south of the Tuscany-Liguria region along the Mediterranean. Pisa and Florence hold impressive Duomos corresponding to the Red Temple and have square brick towers around the city (such as Florence and Genoa). Also, the houses had red tiles such as those of Florence and Pisa. Pentos' most important likeness with Pisa & Florence, and especially Genoa, is that they are trading cities (that trade spices like Genoese merchants once did) and have had early relationships with Rome/Valyria, as the people of Pentos are of Valyrian appearance (silver hair, light skinned, blue-eyed).Myr, however, has inhabitants of olive skin and dark eyes renowned for their craftmanship. My best guess for Myr would be Narbonne/Toulouse as it used to be under Moorish territory (regarding how people appear to be in Myr) and many Jews settled in the Occitan centres of France Jews were experts in craftmanship in the Mediaeval times, much like Myr’s reputable craftsmen). Myr speaks High Valyrian which also means the language (Occitan French) would be derived from a previous Valyrian (Roman/Latin) dialect. Occitan was known for its etymological similarity with Latin and Italian .Tyrosh, famous for its pear brandy and greedy inhabitants would be Lisbon or Porto, with a bastard form of High Valyrian (Portuguese as it is similar to French and Portuguese royalty originally came from France). Although Tyrosh probably indicates the Azores for its archipelago geography, the culture is set in Portuguese standards, as Portugal is famous for its pears and wine (which blended into the "pear brandy" concept). Also, the Portuguese mercantilism, slave trade and colonial expansion the years after the War of the Roses make their 'greedy' reputation similar to that of the inhabitants of Tyrosh.Lys is Paris as it is known for its sensual arts and pleasure-houses. Late Mediaeval/Early Renaissance Paris was renowned for its courtesans and hedonistic environment. One example is how Anne Boleyn seduced Henry VIII with courtly skills taught to her in the Parisian court.Volantis, being an old seaside port, formerly Valyrian colony would mostly resemble Naples as it has an immense crescent-shaped harbour (which could engulf all of Braavos/Venice) like the Gulf of Naples. Naples and Rome also held the closest ties in the Republic's time, just as Volantis and Valyria held amongst all the other Valyrian colonies. Volantis also happens to be efficiently walled and fortified like Naples. Also, Talisa, the Queen of the North, was formerly from Volantis and thus spoke Valyrian, which would correspond to the Italian spoken in Naples. Also, it is said that Volantis is within a region disputed by Lys, Myr (both cities being France), and Tyrosh (which in this case corresponds to Spain albeist its true identity is the neighbouring Portugal- as mentioned before). This fact parallels how Spain and France fought for the control of the Two Sicilies, a land whose capital and major city was Naples.Lorath, being distant and isolated, is Novgorod/Arkhangelsk for the same reasons. It is also said that the Ibbenese (Innuit-like peoples) traded whale products with Lorath just as whale products were prevalent in Novgorod's economy as the Republic of Novgorod held access through Arkhangelsk to the Arctic Sea (a.k.a Shivering Sea in the novels/series) where Beluga whales are found. Location-wise, Arkhangelsk would be a more prominent counterpart.Norvos is a mercantile city that pays tributes to the Dothraki and uses bears as a form of entertainment. It is located on the Noyne river. This is an allusion to Moscow, a city by the Muskovy river which once payed tribute to the Golden Horde/Mongols and contained a multitude of bears in the peripherical region, which bore its coat of arms, featuring a bear in a field of rouge.Qohor, being furthest from the Narrow Sea and famed for the blacksmiths would resemble the Ukrainian Rus' peoples, of Nordic descent. The Nordic Vikings were experts in swordmaking, but had access to the sea, so the landlocked Kiev would be a better option for Qohor.Yunkai is Luxor/Thebes. Primarily, there are two pyramids within the city walls in these two locations. Also the Yunkai'i ruler Razdal mo Eraz stated "Ancient and glorious is Yunkai. Our empire was old before dragons stirred in Old Valyria." This is a reference to the Egyptian Empire and its age when Rome was rising.Meereen, also having pyramids, except three instead of two, and also withholding larger and more "residential" style, would correspond to Cairo/Giza.Astapor is Babylon/Baghdad. Babylon was a very ancient city as is Astapor, and both centres involve in (miitary) slave trade as Astapor does. Also, the gate resembles the Gate of Ishtar with the "crumbling statue" upon it.Ghis would be a double analogy for Greece/Carthage. Historically, it was the nemesis of Valyria, and five wars were waged upon Ghis for Valyrian supremacy. There were only three Punic wars, yet there were two additional campaigns launched by Phyrrhus, the king of Epirus (by then the most influential Hellenic in the Balkans) against Rome AND Carthage as they were distracted with each other. Rome effectively destroyed and annexed both Carthage and Greece in the conclusion of the Punic/Pyrrhic wars. This would be George R. R. Martin’s way of simplifying the analogous context. Ghis’s location across the sea, east of Valyria is similar to that of Epirus, which now covers Northwestern Greece and Albania.Vaes Dothrak corresponds to Karakorum. The capital of the Mongol khans' (khals) realm, it consisted mostly of huts and marketplaces, isolated from other cities by arid steppes. It now lays in ruins.Qarth is Constantinople. This is evident as both cities are immensely wealthy by trade and located in straights where various mercantile ships pass. The Mediterranean (which is today climatically a synonym for warm and summer-like) and the Black seas are lexically symbolised by the Summer and Jade seas, which both cities encompass. Also, Constantinople was the largest city of the world at its heyday. Qarth also is said to be larger than any city in Westeros and any Free City. Both cities also had been walled several times.YiTi serves as a parallel to China. It is located in the Eastern confines of Essos much like China (in the Eurasian ‘'Far East’'). YiTi borders Jogos Nhai to the North, which would be the Mongolian homeland. Much like China’s great wall outposts, YiTi’s emperors established Five Forts to guard from Northern raiders. YiTi has a rich history, with a successive list of Empires and mythological sovereign rulers (similar to China). Politically, YiTi is ruled by authoritarian god-emperors, as did China.Leng is across the sea from YiTi, as Japan is from China/Korea. Leng was historically inhabited by a tall , bright-eyed people called Lengii, a group that still predominates the Southern third of the isle. However, YiTi migrants established a dominant ruling society, much like the Yayoi-descent Japanese (which originated in southern China, crossing the landbridge covering Taiwan) unified a government in the southern half of Japan, expanding northwards and leaving the original Ainu inhabitants to the Northern third.Regarding characters, Game of Thrones mashes many of the English historical figures in each character, for more in-depth storytelling and to avoid blatant similarities. The timeframe is somewhat fixed (late Mediaeval), yet a couple of allusions happen in an earlier period. Examples are:Danaerys Targaryen is Empress Matilda. They both are almost identically portrayed in history. Danaerys traces her lineage to Aegon the Conqueror (an epitaph of William the Conqueror). Both have brothers who die leaving them in a succession crisis. The Targaryens also happen to have a Nordic appearance yet speak by birth a Roman tongue, which was not only what the novels portray as Valyrian as history has taught us the de Normandie spoke Latin/French and were previously Viking settlers. Daenerys also was the object of a distant unorthodox marriage at 14 with the Khalasar of the Dothraki, similarly to Matilda's marriage to Henry V of the Holy Roman Empire. Also, both female figures had to amass armies in order to return home and claim victory with their offspring as a motivation. Interestingly both had three children whose firstborn (or largest in Daenerys's case) was the hardest to tame. A more persistent allusion to Queen Matilda in Westerosi history, however, was the Queen Rhaenyra, as she participated in the Dance of the Dragons, the Westerosi parallel to the Anarchy in England, where two members fought for the throne and conclusively the female claimant had her son installed as king.Robert Baratheon is both Henry VII and Henry VIII, with Henry VII sharing parallels to both Tyrion Lannister and Ramsay Snow. Henry VII conquered the throne of England as Robert Baratheon did to the Iron Throne. Tudor was through his mother a Beaufort, and thus a Lancastrian through the bastard line. He made himself legitimate by two decrees: he petitioned the pope for 'rights of conquest' meaning he could be king anyway and he then legitimised the Beaufort line by stating that since John of Gaunt married Swynford after the children's births, they might as well be legitimised (which is very arbitrary). Consequentially, since Henry VII was essentially of bastardised Lancastrian lineage with no claim and then married the Yorkist princess Elizabeth by force and will of his family interests, he is a fusion of both the characters of Tyrion and Ramsay Bolton, as Tyrion is a Lannister and Ramsay is a bastard made legitimate, both marrying the Stark princess Sansa (not canon). Robert parallels as Henry VII (together with his son)- since he also mourned the loss of his dutiful, but detached Yorkist wife, such as Robert's loss of Lyanna as she was also detached but dutiful to the betrothal (to the point of hiding Jon Snow from him). In turn, both Lyanna and Sansa can be connected to Elizabeth of York's historical figure. So, interestingly, these three characters can be tie into Henry VII’s role, yet Tyrion and Ramsay's links belong to the stage of his life when Henry was his mother's political pawn, and Robert links to his kingship, and particularly that of his eponymous son (Henry VIII)- a young, handsome, chivalrous nights who was somewhat of a Don Giovanni and grew to become a bloated and hedonistic tyrant.Cersei Lannister is both a representation of Margaret of Anjou as well as Isabella of Anjou. Both historic French queens in England are said to have committed adultery. Whilst Margaret of Anjou's case is based in rumour, Margaret was involved directly in the War of the Roses against the Yorks by using her son as a casus belli, just as Cersei manages to wage war against the northern Starks claiming they have betrayed Joffrey. Joffrey is also very much alike Margaret's son, the Lancastrian Prince Edward, which became tyrannical and had sadomasochist hobbies in his teens, and was rumoured to be a bastard child of Edmund Beaufort, a royal commander (just as Joffrey is rumoured to be the son of Jaime, member of the Kingsguard. In the case of Isabella, both her and Cersei were forced to endure a loveless marriage with a King who loved another (While Robert Baratheon flaunted mistresses and bastards in King's Landing, Edward II had male favourites in his court, which brings parallel to Robert's brother, Renly Baratheon). Both Cersei and Isabella's personal policies resulted in a civil war and strived to reign through their son (much like Margaret during the War of the Roses), under their influence which quickly diminished once both Kings attained the age of majority. Given Margaret's case above, when regarding each house, it is clear that the Lannisters are the Lancastrians, since both houses are wealthy, come from the Western portion of the realm, and bear red sigils.Robb Stark is Edward of York, as both houses (York and Stark) come from the Northern part of the realm, bear white sigils and are known for bravery in conquest. His father's (Ned's) execution matches the murder of Richard of York. Also, Richard is similar to Rickard, Ned's father's name. Edward's disadvantageous marriage to a rather lowly-born Lady Elizabeth Woodville (which caused many to eventually turn up against him) is equivalent to Talisa Maegyr/Jeyne Westerling's union with Robb . Catelyn's guidance over her children matched the manner in which Cecily York (née Neville) treated her own kin. Bran and Rickon are parallel to The Princes in the Tower in Season 2, when their adoptive brother Theon Greyjoy usurped Winterfell as in 1483 the princes' biological uncle Richard of York was granted the ward of the princes and the kingdom. The Tyrells are the Stanleys. Both houses, in literature and History switched sides shaping history's course. The Stanleys were loyal to Richard III initially although Margaret Beaufort (which could also be a lesser comparison of Cersei), Henry Tudor's Lancastrian mother, just wed Thomas Stanley, making the Stanleys become strategically supporters of the Lancastrian (Tudor) cause. This mirror Loras's betrothal to Cersei. Interestingly, Thomas Stanley was the earl of Derby, in the Midlands, which I previously stated as a counterpart to The Reach (ruled by the Tyrells). The Arbor, which is part of The Reach, is The Isle of Man's equivalent in context. At the time, Thomas Stanley was King of the Isle of Man (and Loras's father the ruler of The Arbor in the series).Margaery Tyrell, in the latest sequence of events, can be drawn to Lady Jane Grey, and by extension, Cersei represents Queen Mary I of England. It is absolutely certain that it comes to Tommen being linked Edward VII, as he was feeble and overruled by the interests of his mother's family. Margaery, however, represents Jane Grey for she converted to the creeds of the High Sparrow just like Grey did in the Protestant Reformation, and stood much more passively than Cersei in relationship to the Militants. Cersei burned the High Sept of Baelor with all of its followers just as Mary did to Protestants, and Cersei also killed Margaery in the process of gaining power like Mary executed Lady Grey to grasp the English crown.Jon Snow draws an interesting parallel to the story of Reginald Pole. Reginald Pole was the son of Margaret Pole, daughter of George of Clarence, a Yorkist prince. Jon is similarly the son of Lyanna, a Stark. Lyanna also bears resemblance to Margaret Pole for both women were highly sought after (Lyanna had numerous suitors: Robert Baratheon and Rhaegar Targaryen included, while Margaret was not only a royal but the highest ranking woman of her age), but settled for options they wouldn’t have chosen themselves (Margaret married beneath her rank in orders of Henry VII to ensure she would not assert her claim to the throne while Lyanna was to be betrothed to Robert when it is assumed she loved Rhaegar). Most importantly, both women were highly venerated after their violent deaths- Margaret died executed in the bloodiest execution held at the Tower of London and Lyanna died in a pool of blood after childbirth at the Tower of Joy- interestingly both figures were afraid of death- Lyanna said so to Ned while dying and Margaret is said to have attempted to escape the executioner’s block. The comparisons between their sons however is most intriguing; Snow took an oath to the Night’s Watch just as Reginald took an oath to serve the Catholic Church in the clergy- both shouldn’t have inherited titles nor sired children. Reginald incited the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536, which in turn was revived as the Northern Rebelion in 1568, similar to Snow having commanded the Northern Rebellion in Westeros. While Snow reclaimed the North, Reginald simply “stirred up trouble”. Both their families were decimated and both were subject to plots in their respective exiled homes (Castle Black and Rome). Jon Snow represents a more successful Reginald Pole. Reginald was a candidate for the Papacy- which he would’ve been had England not turned Protestant and stripped him from clerical support in the Roman Curia. Snow however was able to become Lord Commander, and reclaim the North- things Pole aspired to, but ultimately failed. In the case of religion:The Old Gods resembles Celtic Paganism as it was still prevalent in northern Westeros just like Northern Britain's Celtic attachments once Christianity was being introduced by the south. There are no churches to preach nor any clergy of the kind in both religions. The Children of the Forest followed it and before the first men (from Essos) even entered the continent which might indicate how historically the Neanderthals inhabited Britain before homo-sapiens (from Europe) crossed the Channel. The New Gods represent the Germanic Pagan gods: their history is similar (they were brought to Westeros by Andals like the Anglo-Saxons imported their own religion to England through waves of migration. However, though they don't represent the deities praised by the Andals perfectly, as there are seven main gods of different aspects, but they do match in form of prayer, in which sometimes different gods are adressed for their different virtues and purposes. Examples include: Balder, god of immortality, Eostre, goddess of birth, Frigh, goddess of love, Hel, goddess of death, Loki, god of cunning, Saxnot, god of the family, Thunor, god of thunder, Tiw, god of war, Wade, god of the sea, Wayland, god of metalworking, and Woden, chief god.The Lord of Light is parallel to Christianity as it is a newer religion from the East yet somewhat practised in the free cities just as many cities in Europe by the early Middle Ages had already become Christian. Its main centre of practise is Asshai which borders the Southeast of the Jade Sea, which gives similarity to Jerusalem's position in Israel near the Southeastern Red Sea. Also, the religion is making its way in Westeros (which is curious chronologically , since by the War of the Roses England was already a Christian land for centuries).

What do you think about Ahok's 2-year prison sentence?

Disclaimer: Non-Jakarta person but Jabodetabek person, Muslim, currently study legal especially cyber-law for master, but not a lawyer, non-supporter of anyone (Agus, Anies, or Ahok himself), fans of Ahok but dissapoint about his mouth and many his policy, support secularism, supporter of freedom of speech and religion, I don’t mind having non-muslim as leader in Governments and friends. If you want to get professional opinion, you should do real public examination of the conviction letter. Please correct me, If you found some false fact (But if its my opinion, let’s call it a day).Res judicata pro veritate habetur. Legal doctrine said that Judge verdict has to be accepted as right until higher-Judge dismissed it. Disappoint is OK, but don’t get too overreacted. Is it OK to suspect bribing or corruption to the Judges, but don’t exaggerate it. Don’t be an anarchy like what you critics to massive rallies before. In western country, you can get arrested for contempt of court (yesterday, some supporter held the Jakarta Appeal Court employee as hostage). Please respect the judge, respect the judiciary system authority (kewibawaan lembaga peradilan) and its ruling. This is what you want to said to other side if the verdict is the opposite, right? Be fair in your mind.Ahok still has right to appeal to high-courts and Supreme Courts, so lets wait and see until inkracht van gewijsde (legally binding)I don’t want to talk about Rizieq or anyone else cases, in the legal perspective, this is purely isolated cases from them. So even Rizieq will/not get jailed in anytime soon, doesn’t mean that Ahok verdict is wrong. Don’t use ad hominem or Tu quoque. My opinion about Rizieq and FPI Someone anonymous's answer to Indonesians, do you see Habib Rizieq and his FPI (Islamic Defenders Front) as a threat to democracy? If yes, how do you think can it be fixed? and if Rizieq will get jailed after this, I hope this is not payback LBH Jakarta Prediksi Nasib Rizieq Shihab Usai Vonis AhokThis is not cases about Al Maidah 51. This is also not about whether choosing leader by religion aspect is constitutional (yes, it is constitutional, read Article 29(2) in UUD1945) So, step aside the debate about whether we can choose Non-Muslim as leader/friends (Awliyaa). Even the serious Islamic scholar, Cleric (not just regular person like us) still has different opinion, different interpretation, so give it to them. In Islam, that is OK to have different interpretation, and don’t mock people just because he has different opinion. But that is a different debate. Al Maidah 51 just the substance, but the real alleged criminal act here, or what we should debate is statement that “people can be fooled by using Al Maidah 51″ can be classified as blasphemyThis is not about you agree with Ahok statement or not. Even I agree with Ahok said (and I said it sometimes) that some politician using Quran verse to political campaign, but He said it out of the blue, using Governor dress, at his work time, not even in Election time (not start yet), out of context (Fish cultivation program), and in public, recorded. Even as I support the transparency of youtube videos DKI upload everyday, he should be more sensitive on this one, just because no one complaint there, he uploaded it so people outside that event can watch it right? You said he was brave and harsh to corruption? True. But not relevant in the legal perspective. As much as I don’t like how our patriarchal society works, this is religion, and in this country you have to be more sensitive, even more you are a public official, a leader, an example to society. In the west country, you can talk like this anywhere. But here, you have to be careful enough, especially in addition that he is double-minority…In Indonesia, the ethics is you shouldn’t comment about the other people religion. Even me, as Muslim too sometimes get insult like “kafir” “munafik” “liberal” if I shout out loud my own opinion, or my interpretation to some religion debate, So I chose to silent, reading situation only or anonymous. How about non-Muslim? Yes, if there are any ethical court for Governor like MKD in DPR, Ahok is purely breach code of conduct, but the question is, is that criminal?Yes, there are 2017 DKI Governor Election which run parallel with the courts (vice versa). Yes I’m not so naive that the Election and its political-social situation doesn’t impact anything with the courts, or vice versa (it contributed to Ahok-Djarot lost in Election Empat Faktor Penyebab Ahok-Djarot Keok di Jakarta / Read also to compare 'Saya Malah Dirugikan oleh Kasus Ahok' ). But Judge convicted not on whether there are Election or not (They said so, p.612). The tempus delicti is happened right before election, so it is coincidence not criminalization like KPK Commissioner or Novel which charged by old even decade indictment (even I don’t fully agree with that terms; criminalization). Yes there are some people who take advantage from this case. Yes, I acknowledge there also some people who celebrate the judges verdict. Beware cum hoc ergo propter hoc (Correlation doesn’t imply causation). But that I think even there are no election or Ahok won’t go to re-election, Ahok will still get faced to courts, as long blasphemy law still there, then I can’t speculate what Judge conviction isYes there are Buni Yani. Some people said that this is his fault to spread the wrong caption (I don’t think that is important). Someone said he edited the video (he only cut it, but the the video itself doesn’t change). Yes because of him, people only watch 13 seconds of that 6000 seconds out of context, the video went viral without context, in addition with wrong caption. He only guilty for provoking people. Rizieq, FPI, etc is also guilty for provoking people anywhere until there are many demonstration, rallies 411, 212, 55 etc (Yes I stand by this argument). But it doesn’t change the substance of Ahok statement on the video itself . Many people watch it directly from Pemprov DKI youtube account (not from Buni Yani, me myself include there) and Ahok word is still there. The Ahok word is perceived trouble from beginning because there are bad verb associated with Al Maidah like “dibodohi” “dibohongi” etc. Even there are miscommunication on ‘pakai’ word, It doesn’t change Ahok own word on video and it still offensive to some people. The forensic expert on court (AKBP Muhammad Nuh) using the original video from Pemprov DKI storage, not from Buni Yani. As another believer, I think it best for him that He should avoid it from beginning, because in Indonesia which literacy-rate is still small, many interpretation and speculation can happen to his own word. So, I can’t blame people who said Ahok is the one who started this. In communication theory, Ahok is the communicator, Buni Yani just the messenger. So in criminal perspective, treat is as separated cases with separated different charge (which is Buni Yani prosecution right now is get started with defamation/hate speech charge via electronic transmission).I myself doesn’t like blasphemy law from 1965 still active in Indonesia, as democratic country (Remember Indonesia is not secular country, nor Islamic country too) which applied freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Blasphemy with loose definition (pasal karet), many subjective room, can be (ab)used against minorities (non-Muslim and alleged deviant sect) anytime they don’t like. Human Right organization has advocate about this (created discussion, FGD, advocate to DPR in penal code revision, judicial review to MK, etc) for long time before Ahok cases (and now, many people and media just join in just for Ahok interest, where are you people at that time? do you support human right or only Ahok?) But Constitutional Court in 2010 said that the law is still constitutional (read article 28j of constitution about restriction to human right), and it is open legal policy, which is up to Legislative and Executive to change it or not. Penal code (KUHP) of Indonesia still in House of Representative for process of revision (and I’m quite frustration why is it so long) but last time I check the latest draft, article about blasphemy is still there. But……..this is not our debate. The law is still positive law, as long the law is still there, which means, it is not OK to break it (legality principle of law).Someone said, Blasphemy law has been applied to Lia Eden, Ahmad Musadegh, Gafatar, etc, and has its jurisprudence for everyone get maximum sentence. No. Article 156a in Penal code is applied to many things, such as Deviant Sect (abusing religion, example: Lia Eden and Gafatar), campaign to atheism (156a, paragraph b, read my answer in Someone anonymous's answer to How does Indonesia treat its atheist citizens?), and staining the religion (penodaan agama) like Arswendo or HB Jassin, and maybe Ahok, right now, who “seemed” “alleged” to “undermine” (my own word) some religion aspect. Each cases has its own social, legal & political situation, so it can’t be apple-to-apple comparison. This is such a grey area. You can’t labelled someone pro-Ahok & contra-Ahok, Ahokers, Kaum Berjubah, Kaum Sumbu Pendek, Bani Taplak, etc. I agree with some side argument and disagree with some side argument. Look at this one: LBH Jakarta is always against Ahok when it come to forced eviction policy (penggusuran paksa), but he support Ahok to get free by sending amicus curiae to courts Penasihat Hukum Ahok Bacakan "Amicus Curiae" yang Diajukan LBH Jakarta - Kompas.com Because they stand by the idealism, not the person. Policy, not adoration. Now the verdict, (p. 616)“Article 156aBy a maximum imprisonment of five years shall be punished any person who deliberately in public gives expression to feelings or commits an act,a. which principally have the character of being at enmity with, abusing or staining a religion, adhered to in Indonesia;b. with the intention to prevent a person to adhere to any religion based on the belief of the almighty God.”Pasal 156aDipidana dengan pidana penjara selama-lamanya lima tahun barang siapa dengan sengaja di muka umum mengeluarkan perasaan atau melakukan perbuatan:a. yang pada pokoknya bersifat permusuhan, penyalahgunaan atau penodaan terhadap suatu agama yang dianut di Indonesia;b. dengan maksud agar supaya orang tidak menganut agama apa pun juga, yang bersendikan Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa”Judge said, 2 years with arrested right now. Let’s break it down.2 years in jail. In my opinion, I expect this. Don’t get me wrong, I myself even I don’t like Ahok insensitive mouth or many of his policy (that is another debate), I don’t wanna him to get convict by blasphemy (Please back to point 7 up there). In my little heart, good people like him should get free or at least get probation sentence. But with many evidence, free conviction is hard to get.But 2 years it is still OK, because the maximum penalty is 5 years. The burden factor is: Ahok isn’t admitted that he is wrong (This is important for Judge), Ahok is make public inconvenience in society, and Ahok is make some people in Muslim society get feeling hurt. Even some judges said that Ahok as public servant have to be a good example to society (p. 614) (yes I agree, because he is the Governor and have to shout his mouth sometimes and behave well, Judges said too (p. 609) that he has to carefull to talk about religion), but because Ahok is behave well in trial, cooperative, never convicted before, so the judges convict 2 years, not 5 years. Yang memberatkan dan meringankan pada sidang Basuki Purnama - ANTARA News or read this on p. 615Some people said, (like expert Yusril Ihza) this is ultra petita because Judge convict more than prosecutor want (probation sentence), although theoretically it can. This is not ultra petita. 1) Ultra petita is concept in civil law (hukum perdata) not criminal law that Judge approved more than what law suit ask. 2) In Indictment letter from prosecutor (surat dakwaan) both article 156 or 156a (as alternative) is charged against Ahok there, so the judge doesn’t jump out of the box (the verdict is still in venn diagram). Polemik Ultra Petita dan Penahanan dalam Vonis Ahok On the contrary, I myself disappoint with prosecutor that seemed uncertain about their indictment letter themselves in the first, by not choosing 156a, but only 156 (which is irrelevant with this case). I agree with the Judges in this by applying 156a, not 156. But I believe they still good people Rekam Jejak Empat Jaksa Penuntut AhokSome said, based on PNPS (Penetapan Presiden) 1/1965 about Prevention of Blasphemy on Religion, Ahok should get warning first before going to prosecuted. No it doesn’t. Yes Article 156a in our Penal Code derived from PNPS article 4. But the warning mandatory (article 2) from PNPS itself is no longer applied when 156a is codified to the Penal Code. PNPS is not our hierarchy of regulation right now. His derivative (156a) is applied to Law no. 1/1946 about Penal Code. I know some legal expert is stating other opinion, but as long as it is the positive law, you shouldn’t do it and make excuses about it, right? Some said this is because mob-trial out there. Yes, Judge have full authority to convict people, based on enough evidence, fact of trial, and his conscience. In Indonesia, there are concept named rechtsvinding; Judge learn the living values of justice from society. It is shown in Supreme Court Law (Law no. 48/2009) article 5(1). If the subjective opinion of Judge said that what people demand is guilty, is it legal to Judge to take it as considerations as long other parameter is good too (enough evidence, fact of trial). In fact, with you doing demonstration right now, and hypothetically Judge in Higher Court will convict Ahok free, and you yay for it, can you defend your argument right know to other side later, and don’t you think you are such a hypocrite?People said that Judge in Ahok cases is incompetent and corrupt. Look at here Menelisik Hakim Dwi yang Akan Mengadili Basuki. In past, Judge Dwiarso has convict corruption cases like his fellow judge bribery and ex-Regent corruption, won the people over Ganjar (Governor of Central Java), etc)). The other is had good record too, look at other article there. Some said that the judges convict based on their religion. I said, which ones? Because the judges (5 judges) has diverse religion. Ini Susunan Majelis Hakim Kasus Ahok The judges convict based on discussion (musyawarah, not voting) and there are no dissenting opinion. Some said that this is exchange for HTI dismissal on day before. What the f*ck…where the hell someone get that ideas?? As renowned and respected activist he shouldn’t make wild speculation about that..he has more reputation than this analysis. Hypothetically, even President has political motive to intervene (I don’t know), he can only touch Police or Prosecutor. The court, from lower, higher until supreme court, and its administration is independent from Executive and Legislative. This called one-roof-system (sistem peradilan satu atap), applied since 2004, that different from New Order. Even Chief Justice of Supreme Court Hatta Ali (which people said, this Jusuf Kalla people) can’t order the lower-judge to change the verdict…because each of Judge has its own independence. Yes, I know it is unusual that the three of five judges in Ahok cases get promotion one day after Ahok verdict. But what I know about Judge promotion in Supreme Court, it is prepared months before and has waiting list. Until someone prove it (there are evidence communication, recording, letter or something, yes burden of proof is on the accuser) this is purely crazy conspiracy theory.Arrested. Even the convict is guilty and jail, I strongly against this. Judge can’t arrest him after close the trial. The reason is for further examination. What examination?? The lower-court judge job is done when the trial is closed. If Judges decide to arrest Ahok when trial is ongoing (even Police or Prosecutor don’t arrest him at that time 5 Pertimbangan Kejagung Tidak Menahan Ahok), it is OK for judges in the middle of trial to arrest him and fit the procedure, but after the trial? This is violating the human right. The authority to arrest (right now, after the verdict) is at Higher Court now. Pakar: Kewenangan Penahanan Ahok Ada di Pengadilan Tinggi - Kriminalitas.com Although, it said that Prosecutor can arrest the defendant not for the verdict execution, but because the Judges said so (the judge order), because Judge has the authority Wajarkah Ahok Langsung Ditahan? Prof. Romli support this second argument. There are 3 subjective reason (Criminal Procedure Code Article 21–31) why someone is arrested in criminal investigation 1) Run away 2) Destroy the evidence 3) Repeat the act. The objective is based on max years of sentence and the crime itself. Which one of that reason Mr Ahok do? He is Governor, he can’t be fool enough to run away, many people want to bail him and act as assurance (like Djarot or Goenawan Muhammad). All of evidence is confiscated by State, so what remain is to destroy? Repeat the act….hmm yeah I’m not certain on this. Because many evidence that Ahok said the same thing over and over again (Cases when Ahok make joke about Almaidah wifi and kafir as password (google it), Ahok interview in Al Jazeera he said he didn’t regret it and will said it again, because he didn’t intend to (watch it), etc). Maybe the judge afraid that he will repeat it again. Yusril: Hakim Punya Dasar untuk Menahan Ahok Pascavonis and even I don’t like Rizieq Shihab (read my remarks above on point 3), I have to agree to him on this one Rizieq Serahkan Bukti Wawancara Ahok dengan Al JazeeraSource: Ahok: Indonesia's religious tolerance on trial? or search it from youtube and watch from 6:25 to get the contextElement “deliberately” which the lawyer said that he had no intention, Judge said deliberately is “willing and knowing / Willens en Wetens”, refer to expert from Dutch, Memorie van Toelichting. (Read p. 606 on Conviction Letter). Judge refer in Ahok “best seller” book, which he mention on Al Jazeera video too, he mention about Al Maidah too (He said the book was OK because the book hasn’t been banned to distribute, no one question it, and this is all because he’s joining re-election). Based on the book, Judge knew that Ahok was already knew what Al Maidah is, as part of Holy Quran is, but still using it at Kepulauan Seribu with bad/negative word, and like I said, out of the blue, in the middle of work time, out of context, etc Hakim Nilai Ahok Terbukti Sengaja Bicara Al-Maidah 51 / The debate started from trial about proving the blasphemy itself Beda Pandangan Antara Ahli Hukum Pidana dari JPU dan Pengacara Ahok - Kompas.com. Judge has agree with prosecutor too on this one Jaksa: Isi Buku yang Ditulis Ahok Justru Timbulkan Perpecahan | Republika Online I read the book 2 years ago, and I remember it, this is the part which been discussed. Even I don’t think this isn’t offensive, but according to Judge it proved that Ahok know about Al Maidah as an Islamic Quran verse before Kepulauan Seribu case which mean, he said it deliberately.Even Ahok has apologize (Note: I accept it, because I don’t have problem with the substance) and his supporter bragged that he is statesman who apologize for crime he didn’t commit, but his mouth himself which made me wonder…Soal Boby Mahasiswa UI, Ahok: Orang Rasis Jual Nama UI Lalu Hanya Minta Maaf? or when He talk harsh to Ma’ruf Amin in the trials. But yeah, lets hope Judge in Jakarta Appeal Court (Yusril: Penahanan Ahok Bisa Ditangguhkan, asalkan... - Kompas.com. ) can suspend the arrest and make Ahok as City Prisoner, even some Professor that I respect such as Romli Atmasasmita said it can’t. It is OK in academic to have different argument, respect it. Ramai-Ramai Minta Penangguhan Penahanan Ahok / Pakar Hukum: Penahanan Ahok Tak Bisa DitangguhkanAbout the Administrative Position as Governor,As convicted criminal and arrested, he can’t do his job as Governor, so the decision of Minister of Home Affair Tjahjo Kumolo (BREAKING NEWS: Ahok Diberhentikan Sementara sebagai Gubernur DKI Jakarta - Wartakota) is right to suspend Ahok and install Djarot, Vice Governor as Acting Governor. Article 65(3) on Local Government Law said “Head of Local Government who was serving a period of detention forbidden to doing the duty and authority as stated in paragraph 1 and 2” So this is clearly because arrested, not because 2 years-jail. But even later if the Jakarta Appeal Court suspend the detention and make Ahok as city prisoner, it doesn’t reinstate him back as Governor Penangguhan Penahanan Dikabulkan, Mendagri: Ahok Tetap Nonaktif which means we will have Djarot as Acting Governor for couple next month until Anies inauguration in Oktober 2017The debate like this happened early this year Penonaktifan Ahok Akan Segera Diputuskan Kemendagri - Kompas.com (until Tjahjo Kumolo and Jokowi himself was suspected to picking side to Ahok) Presiden Bisa Dituduh Langgar UU Jika Tidak Berhentikan Ahok - Tribunnews.com because there are many interpretation about Article 83 in Local Government Law (Law 23/2014) “at least 5 year”. Many constitutional law expert has divided on this issues, even Refly Harun got mocked from it Memahami Perdebatan Pemberhentian Ahok (Zainal Mochtar UGM Opinion) / Lagi, Pemberhentian (Sementara) Ahok (Refly Harun UGM opinion) / Sulitnya Memberhentikan Sementara Ahok (Denny Indrayana UGM opinion) / Multitafsir Pemberhentian Ahok (Fery Amsari Unand opinion) / Mahfud MD: Ahok Harus Diberhentikan Sementara (Mahfud MD UII Opinion)Implication to his Political CareerBefore the verdict, after the election, Ahok himself stated he doesn’t want to be a Minister, a Commissioner of KPK, or Presidential Staff. He want to make talk show on TV. He also said “infidels can’t be an Public Official in this country” with sarcasm. If the 2 years convict is still upheld until Supreme Court, clearly Ahok can’t participate in 2019 Election, as President, VP, or someone supporter. And because he was already charged (not convicted) with blasphemy (with maximum sentence of 5 years), he can’t be a Minister based on Law 38/2009 about State Ministry who stated a Minister candidate was never indicted with 5 years sentence (the keyword is indicted “diancam” not the verdict “divonis”. He also can’t be a Member of Parliament again with the same restriction. So, as long as blasphemy charged (5 years max) is still upheld until Supreme Court (not the other charged which lower than max 5 years, or get free), his political career in (Central) Government is likely to be over unless Laws revision or God hands help us. Ahok Mustahil Menjabat Presiden, Menteri, bahkan Anggota DPREven if he can, will Jokowi bring him? Now when He lost election and get convicted. Maybe Jokowi will set some distant to him Someone anonymous's answer to Will the Ahok factor be a liability for Jokowi's 2019 re-election?But…he can be a Governor, or Mayor/Regent (Elected Position) again. As long as he served his sentence, and declared to society that he was ex-convicted and what is his criminal act, and he win the election (of course). This happened last year when Constitutional Court approved ex-con Abdullah Puteh, former Governor of Aceh, that he, as ex-con in corruption cases want to participate again in Aceh Governor Election but the law says he can’t. He bring judicial review, said this is violate his right (because you get “double” punishment, even after you served your sentence well and your political right is not revoked by court), and MK approved it with critics everywhere from CSO like ICW and many election observer. Let see in the future if those CSO and society is still consistent if Ahok faced the same cases. 'Ahok Masih Bisa jadi Gubernur Lagi'Where President and Central Government stand on this cases (After verdict)Although I respect Minister Tjahjo Kumolo who was quick to take decision as the law stated it (suspend Ahok, install Djarot, prepare Presidential Decree about Ahok suspension) in one day, it seems that other Minister or Ministry can’tWhen international media highlight Ahok cases, people seems OK, even proud, but in some other cases like Papua, 1965 cases, Palm Oil rejection from Europe or Australia scandal (wiretapping, Pancasila insult, etc) or Allan Nairn inquiry about coup, you people is raged “senggol bacok” or denial when someone from foreign critics us (remember we praise Indonesia Young Diplomat like hero when she respond aggressively against Pacific Countries Leader accusation about Papua human right violation? “Mabuk Nara” di Jakarta, Perjuangan di Papua Seperti Biasa / Narasi Nara, Narasi Indonesia or remember when International People Tribunal hear a cases from 1965 human right victims? Peristiwa 1965, IPT dan Respons Pemerintah - Kompas.com ). But right now when many foreign media, or Asian UN Human Right Commissioner, Ambassador of UK, Parliament of Netherland, etc comment or plan their investigation to us, Foreign Ministry seems won’t deny/giving assertive response/change the narration enough that Indonesia religious tolerance doesn’t stop only because Ahok cases Dunia Internasional Tanggapi Vonis Ahok, Ini Respons Kemlu / Kemlu: Tak Ada Tekanan Asing Soal Vonis Ahok. Instead some people support it only because it same with their interest. Indonesia has image of strong pluralism in international. Indonesia is leading example that democracy and Islam can live together. One Ahok cases doesn’t stop it, and Foreign Minister should keep our image like that international stage, whether President agree about it politically or not. I’m not saying that blasphemy or other human right violation in Indonesia shouldn’t get international attention or encouragement from other countries, yes it has to. I support that instead with fair and with enough non-intervention condition, because Government seemed reluctant in how to finish each violation. But here I want to highlight Indonesia Government under Jokowi Admin equal response against each accusation with fair when it seems it only doing it when it is align with President domestic political interest. When some hacker doing hack (doing deface) to some government website/news portal landing page, people seems to praised them as hero. WTF. The problem is not with the content (hacktivism), the problem is with the method. Hacking in our cyber-law is a crime, it fit article 30 of Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE Law) about illegal access. Where are the Kominfo on this one? Peretasan situs marak, Kominfo kemana? | IndotelkoWhen supporter of Ahok doing demonstration in front of Cipinang Detention Center until late night, it violate the Law 9/1998 about Freedom of Speech in Public Place that stated Demonstration in public stop at 18.00 or 6 pm o’clock. It happened not only at day one but the other day too. But Police seems don’t want to dismiss them and in the contrary doing discretion by allow them. Thursday at Waisak Day, some people still doing demonstration even it is an exception, that it is not allowed to doing demonstration in national big day Demo di Hari Raya Waisak, Massa Pendukung Ahok Dibubarkan. There are some riots like when supporter smash Cipinang fence VIDEO: Detik-detik Massa Pendukung Ahok Nyaris Robohkan Pagar LP Cipinang - Tribun Timur, some supporter held Courts (Jakarta Appeal Courts) employee hostage Massa Pendukung Ahok Sandera Pegawai Pengadilan Berlangsung Ricuh. They really ruined Ahok image although Djarot and Ahok himself (via Handie Talkie) urge them to go home. Yes I know Rizieq and GNPF doing the same thing, and maybe it cost Judge decision, and you complaint and insult them everywhere, but they always send notification to police, days or weeks before, doing it in one day with some range (411, 212, 55, etc) not everyday until night like now. Alumni 212 bandingkan aksinya dengan pendukung Ahok di Cipinang | merdeka.com I don’t said that Rizieq and GNPF rallies are good. Yes I don’t like them too when they violate the rule such as hit the journalist or some people doing hate speech, and they should be held accountable. But two wrong don’t make it right. Anyone and whoever break the law and procedure should be held accountable.Ahok now is moved to Brimob Police Commando Headquarter in Depok, which only less than 24-hours after he was enter the detention in Cipinang. The head of Cipinang Detention center said it was security concern. Yasona Laoly as Minister of Law and Human Right said in interview that many prisoner don’t chose Ahok in last Election (How do you know?), and the guard number there is so small, and its overcapacity, and because of massive supporter demonstration (which on day one almost broke the fence), make traffic jam in front of the detention center which is national road (jalan protokol), they can’t guard it with optimal. Instead dismiss the supporter demonstration, Ahok was moved? So Ahok was threatened by his own supporter? There are many cases that public elected official is arrested in Cipinang detention center that don’t have same privilege like Ahok. Many speculated that this is President order (because Detention Center is still authority of Executive) hmm I can’t comment much about this,Now, the Attorney General said they want to appeal to higher courts Kejaksaan Pastikan Banding atas Vonis Ahok - Kompas.com / Banding Kasus Ahok, JPU Dipertanyakan. Yes I know that Prosecutor has the same right as Defendant to appeal to higher court. Yes I know in AG (or KPK) standard operating procedure in prosecuting cases, they have to appeal if some parameter doesn’t achieved (2/3 of jailed time, etc) or in this case, Judges dismissed any of Prosecutor charged (from article 156 to 156a, which I’m agree about). Yes. Prosecutor has right to prove they are right too, and prove they are still professional and certain while doing their job. Yes. the goal for prosecution is for uphold the material truth (Kebenaran materiil) not only want the defendant guilty or jailed in maximum time. If what they think the justice is probation sentence with article 156 not 156a, they have to pursue and uphold it. Because, in each of indictment letter, it started with “Pro Justitia” / “Untuk Keadilan” “For Justice”. Langkah Banding Jaksa dalam Kasus Ahok untuk Tegakkan Keadilan - Tribunnews.com While theoretically it can, but is it necessary? While I agree Ahok must be free/or reduced the sentence, and Ahok attorney is already want to appeal his cases to higher courts, is AG the state prosecutor or the defendant’s attorney?President said we must respect the courts, he can’t intervene, praised our democracy country which using law as tools to solve conflict, and also respect Mr Basuki appeal decision. But there are many indication, why his subordinate doesn’t seems so? or perceived to protect him? is it Asal Bapak Senang? or Asal Emak Senang? So, where is equality before the law? Are law only applied when the favor is the same as the President or the ruling party? Conclusion: Religious tolerance, radicalism, and futures of IndonesiaPeople said that this is the end of religious tolerance. Rising of radicalism. End of justice in Indonesia. Want to leave the country. Compare it with populism wave with Donald Trump and Brexit, or Le Pen (yes, she lost!). Some people just posting #ripjustice (if you want to be fair, the justice in our country has been rest in peace in many things like human right serious violation whom the investigation has been stalled, Kamisan action each week since decades ago doesn’t get attention enough Sepuluh Tahun Kamisan dan Nyali Jokowi untuk Hak Asasi, land dispute conflicts anywhere, environmental disaster legal problem like Kendeng or Reclamation, etc, where were you all this time? just because this is Ahok?) There are many priorities issues about justice which is waiting for your lilin movement in city all over Indonesia to get President even International attention.Ahok’s problem is not about kebhinekaan/religious tolerance. Which the main narration is all about. Judges said that too (p. 614), said that this is purely criminal act. Tolerance doesn’t said about we have to guard Christmas Night like Banser, or saying Marry Christmas to them. Just live your life, and let other exercise their right too. We have many differences, and we don’t have mix them, we just have to agree to disagree. Tolerance is how we act and behave to another believer even we don’t agree with them, and protect minorities to exercise their right because they can’t defend it them self. Let it natural. But I don’t say that there are no intolerance in Indonesia, yes there are. Example like rejection of Church development like Santa Clara in Bekasi, GKI Yasmin in Bogor, Christmas Event rejection in Bandung Sabuga last year, banning Muslim for saying marry Christmas, and minority discrimination such as Shia and Ahmadiya, local religion believers like Sunda Wiwitan which doesn’t get their civil right until now, LGBT, or hate speech like “Ganyang C*na” etc. The extreme one such radical group like HTI (without violence, but has radical opinion/mind) or FPI (with violence “maen otot”) is another debate.Ahok supporter singing national song, chanting “NKRI harga mati”, expelled Fahri Hamzah from Manado, he has to be evacuated using barracuda, until he fly back again to Jakarta that day (even sometimes I don’t like him, He as public official for official capacity shouldn't receive that kind of terror) or something like that is send the wrong message, that Ahok jailed time is not nationalistic. You still using old campaign narration from Election which is different with Ahok legal cases. You yourself who mix Election and legal cases, not the otherwise. You maybe insult other people, who agree with Ahok sentence, that they aren’t nationalistic, and provoke and prolong conflict post-Election with diametrical society.Ahok’s problem is about his mouth insensitivity, and our legal policy about blasphemy/ethical speech. Just because he claimed and perceived clean from corruption, has “fire” spirit to eradicate corruption in bureaucracy, has doing some good achievement to Jakarta, doesn’t mean he can’t or won’t be jailed for another offense even small crime, or he get jailed free card, or you just excuse “Corruptor Fight back!” or “Indonesia doesn’t know how to thank good people”, which is all maybe true but not relevant. Beware of “appeal to emotion” logical fallacyFrom what I read in Indonesian Quoran all week, please stop scaremongering people with your ghost bad dream (such as Indonistan, or Indonesia as next Syria, can I leave this country, that’s overreacted), please still has hope and fight from the inside, not only complaints on social media and doing demonstration only when Ahok has problems. Politician come and go, but don’t lose hope to your country and hold firm your idealism. Be another Ahok (Ex: I gave two thumbs up to his supporter like Tsamara Amany), join politics and learn from him. Read my remarks on Someone anonymous's answer to I live in Indonesia and have to face intolerance everyday. Is there any better option than growing up here and change things in the future? But, for what it’s worth, As tribute to Mr Ahok, let’s give appreciation to his dedication to Jakarta. I hope we can learn from his achievement and also his mistake.
