Is every Canadian okay with the cruel massacre of seals in the Arctic?

No, not every Canadian is fine with the sustainable harvesting of seals as a renewable resource. The “cruel massacre” you refer to is in Newfoundland, not the Arctic. Seals are harvested as a way of life on the East coast and the North. The harvesting varies depending on the location. But the Canadian government supports the harvest. The importance of the seal harvestThe importance of the seal harvestLearn about the economic, social and cultural importance of the seal harvest to Canada.Economic importanceCanadian seal harvesters, processors, artisans and Inuit produce some of the finest quality seal products in the world and contribute to Canada’s economy. In 2006, the total landed value of the seal harvest reached an historic high of $34.1 million. This historic high value had a trickle-down effect in other sectors of the economy. In Canada’s remote coastal and northern communities, sealing is an important part of the way of life and a much needed source of income for thousands of families. The revenues generated from this activity are an integral component of sealers’ annual income. This fishery also contributes to the diversity of income sources available in fishing communities.Social and cultural importanceSeals have been harvested for food, fuel, clothing and other products for hundreds of years. In addition to their economic value, seal products hold a significant cultural and traditional value to northern communities, which is of key importance to the Government of Canada. Indigenous peoples in Canada have a constitutionally-protected right to harvest marine mammals, including seals, as long as the harvest is consistent with conservation needs and other requirements. Why Canada supports the seal harvestThe Canadian government believes in the sustainable use of a renewable resource such as the harp seal. As with all Canadian fisheries, Fisheries and Oceans Canada supports and regulates the seal harvest and is committed to ensuring it is sustainable and conducted safely and humanely. The Canadian seal harvest is one of the world’s most highly regulated and monitored harvests of wild animals. It is an important economic and cultural activity in communities in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and the Arctic.

Why are so many Tamilians supporting Jallikattu?

I was one among several people who had strong feelings against Jalli Kattu. It used to be conducted until a decade ago in a haphazard manner. Men, trying to hang on to the bulls’ hump were hurt and sometimes gored fatally. I used to be sad for the guys and their families. Why one should take part in such dangerous sport and end up in tragedy on a joyous festival day. Our own people were for and against the sports to avoid death during festivals for nothing. Our courts in Tamilnadu banned the sport then allowed it after assurances from the organizers to regulate the sport with only one person to hold or stop the bull by hanging on to it’s hump at a time. And spectators to barricaded well in a certain distance to avoid accidental encounter. Every one knows well in Tamilnadu that it is purely a sport and nothing to do with bulls being tortured. Jalli Kattu itself is a colloquial word. It refers to prize money /gold coins wrapped around the bulky and untamed bulls’ horns. It is not possible to untie the prize money without bringing down the bull. Hence people used to try their luck. And later it was changed to only hanging on to the bulls’ hump for 30 seconds and the prize was distributed to the brave hearts. There was no torture involved. Pulling tail to divert the bulls’ attention was allowed when the players are at danger or the bulls run into men endangering their lives. When congress government was in power one Jairam Ramesh included bulls in the list of animals which should not be exhibited. It is illogical to add domestic bulls in the list of wild animals. No one in the world can deny the truth that cattle are live stock and they are used in farming and pulling carts. If cow is domestic animal how come bulls become wild animal. In Gujarat and Rajasthan Camels are used to transport goods. Can any one say that camels are domestic animals in India? Elephants are used in Assam,Kerala,Karnataka and Tamilnadu for many many centuries. Do we not know how these animals are trained to obey the orders to work. Horses are used in races, carrying goods and even tilling all over the world.Reindeer ,dogs , and stags are used by Eskimos and in the pole regions. Pongal is a festival of Tamils. People celebrate the harvesting of paddy for centuries. And Jalli Kattu/ Eru Thazhvudhal/ Embracing the bull is part of celebrations. It is also an identity of Tamil culture and pride. Some central government agencies declared without any reason that Pongal will not be a compulsory central government holiday in Tamilnadu. People of Tamilnadu were provoked by this sudden development and they doubt it as an attack on their cultural identity. Out of 137 variety of cattle (Cows and bulls) more than 100 variety of cattle is extinct due to import of cattle from Denmark,Australia and other countries. Agriculture in India was like renewable energy. Farming ,harvesting, paddy for people and hay for cattle. Cows for milking and Oxen for tilling. Hay for cattle fodder and cow dung for fertilizer and fuel. Can any one knows about rural India deny this. Attempts to pluck away the bulls or make it use less is seen as design to eradicate cattle population in India. PETA is not originally started for all animals. In western countries particularly in USA this organization kills hundreds of pets every day. How come this NGO is allowed as protectors of animal welfare. Who are they to encroach into Indian culture. How come our courts entertain them. Central government should be sensitive towards the rights and freedom of states’ in such issues. The central government brought in emergency ordinances to pacify other states against Tamilnadu ‘s interest. There are so many other issues too. Believe it or not Tamilnadu has almost lost entire cultivation land for want of Kaveri water. Did Central government enforce the State of Karnataka to release water from Kaveri which is also a mother to us. One must know that Kaveri was flowing in to Tamilnadu since more than 2000 years our ancient literature prove this and Tamilnadu was the Rice Barn of Southern India. My grandfathers and Mamas have lost their lively hood with out water. This year Tamilnadu is experiencing drought. Farmers are committing suicide everyday. To top it the struggle and loss of business in the state due to demonetization. Generally Tamilnadu is a peaceful state by all comparison with any state in India but simmering in anger and pain due to above reasons and they feel that they are let down by central government. Eru Thazhuvudhal/ Bull embracing is our pride. Central government could have easily let it happen. The government has been playing cat and mouse game. The present leader at the center has been projected as the greatest prime minister but reluctant to act quickly. People came out spontaneously. There can not any comparison with the discipline of the protesters. Raising slogans against the Prime minister is not a crime Or stating other failures of the government that hurt the state is a deadly sin.Even that was curtailed by the leading men and women in groups. I was told that police targeted those who gave water and biscuits and food to the peaceful protesters who stayed day and night. And I believe that they are labelled as anti nationals for some of them are non Hindus. It is every one’s democratic right to protest or support the peaceful protesters for a national cause. I think it is contemptuous or appeasing some one to label those citizens as anti nationals. Is this the democracy India is boasting to the world? The people today may have silenced but the entire humanity can assess about each individual who is at fault. The political leaders won’t be famous for their guilt. Most youngsters cried on hearing that the protesters were brutalized for nothing. The pictures of police setting fire to vehicles and fish vendors stalls are to be probed. I am Indian and a globalist I love humanity. I know about cattle for my forefathers were shepherds and farmers and I have seen cattle in hundreds at home. Believe it or not we used to milk one or two cows only. Entire bulls will be living free till they attain certain age and used in farming activities. We love cattle. We do not sell even the dead to any one and bury them in the back yards. No one from outside need to tell us what is animal rights. They are our pets. They are part of our life. Encroaching our culture or rights will amount to suppression.

I've often been told that wild caught fish is superior to farmed raised. Is this true or is it too much of a generalization?

It is "generally true" in that just like any mass-produced animal product for human consumption there are trade-offs. Wild-caught fish even more so are something like "free-range" chickens in that they are left to their devices to feed and grow. Whereas the latter has a human backup to ensure they're maturing at a rate and capacity that'll make them marketable for consumption, a wild fish has survived the laws of nature (only the fittest) and dined on their natural food sources that they find. Depending on their habitat they are also freer of possible human-borne contaminants, food sources, antibiotics. The main complaint you'll hear about farm-raised fish is that "taste different" and that they're potentially less-noble a food source than what's caught in the wild. That said most any reputable sushi restaurant will not serve anything but wild-caught fish, whereas when you see sushi at bargain prices you can presume at least some of that is farm-raised or probably not of the highest quality. You may enjoy it equally as much and not become ill but like most everything in life: You get what you pay for.Farmed fish are most often raised in a closed environment or penned up in the open ocean, and they're often wholly dependent on humans whose goal is to grow them faster and bigger than they would normally in the same time period in nature for reasons of yield and economy. In their feed there's often fillers (think about beef cattle are often fed a mixture that includes corn, grain, AND antibiotics that they would never find naturally). And while it's a regulated industry here and elsewhere so there are food standards for safety, the argument goes that some may consider their living conditions less-than-humane, the end-product perhaps plumper, juicier, more tender, and perhaps not at naturally tasty but that's because they aren't in the wild struggling for survival. Is farm-raised any less healthy or unsafe to consume? Probably not to the average consumer who often is focused on price whether buying to prepare or eating out in a restaurant. It's a lot more costly and time-consuming to hunt down wild fish than take farm fish raised specifically for an economy of scale, as well as perhaps, for conservation and resource renewability. But that's why you'll see a non-significant difference in retail price at the market. To the trained palette the taste difference can be noticeable, but most won't even give a second thought so long as the product has been handled correctly according to food safety standards, smells fresh, and well-prepared.
