I met an interviewee the day before an interview.I was a part time grad student while holding a professional position.One school day, dressed typical student, with a break in my class schedule I went to the Engineering Library to find a place to study. Although I was in the MBA program my undergrad is engineering and I needed to look up a book from the industrial engineering section.Most of the study desks were empty but had books piled on them. There are posted notices that the desks cannot be saved. Use them or lose them.I sat in one that had a pile of books and was there about 90 minutes when a guy comes up to me and demands the desk. It was “his”; he had “saved” it with his books.I pointed to the sign saying I would be finished in about 20 minutes. He went into full asshole mode. Called me names and was trying to be physically threatening.The librarian came over and removed him from the library telling him he was banned for the rest of the term.Next day was work day, suit and tie, interviewing summer students at the University in a meeting room across from the library.Same guy walks in, he does not recognize me at first.I asked if he had ever been banned from the university library. Now he recognized me.Interview over.

There are a multitude of reasons.Firstly, over the years, the ROI from an MBA degree has drastically come down. The cost of an MBA degree in India from one of the top IIMs is about INR 25L currently. It was about INR 14L seven years ago. And a paltry INR 4–5L a few years prior to that. At the same time, the overall placement figures haven’t kept pace with the same. The market right now is looking for cross-functional talent — people with the required domain knowledge, armed with decent technological acumen, and the ability to run multiple ships at the same time. Skills like project or product management, entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship, strategy formulation and implementation, managing global teams, Sales etc are still not in focus.Thirdly, the rise of alternative options that are both more accessible and economical has dulled the aura of an MBA degree. You can learn almost everything you would in an MBA program online, at a fraction of the cost and from the convenience of your living room. I believe that MOOCs are the future of education. At the same time, professional associations have sprung up for almost everything and their certifications have the required market visibility and acceptance — CFA/FRM for finance, PMP/PRINCEII/Scrum for Project Management, Six Sigma for Operations, SHRM for Human Resource Management, etc.Finally, technology is literally reshaping everything. You don’t need maths wizards to solve complex business problems; you have supercomputers for that. You don’t need the best financial analysts to carry out trading; there are self-learning algorithms. You don’t need people to run projects; tools can take care of most of them. The future belongs to the technocrats and MBA programs haven’t grasped this yet.“The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.”
