What are the basic parameters on which scholarships are approved for an MS in construction management? How important is work experience?

Scholarships in MS in Construction management is rare. And for that you need to apply to mid level universities with a strong profile. The only other way that you can be funded for the period of your education is either working as a Teaching assistant to any professor in construction management department or any other department, or if the construction management department is doing any research. Currently at Purdue, I did not find any of them. So most of the construction management students like me are unfunded. The BCM people have TAs so they are supported. You will have to apply for fellowships that your university offers, and it requires you to have an all-round development. This means top notch academics, outstanding extra-curriculars and leadership skills. If anything among these three fits you then I would recommend you to apply to it. For this you should be sending your application as soon as the forms open for a particular semester, and then look for the deadline for fellowships. As is for experience, I did not have any advantage yet. My experience did not help me get an internship, maybe because of the irrelevance with respect to the work that most companies do there. Work experience would not be very beneficial in internships, but as my seniors say it would help me with placements. So lets see what happens. Otherwise all those guys (my seniors) were freshers so you would not be at a loss without experience.

What about NICMAR?

NICMAR i.e National Institute of Construction Management and Research has 4 branches(to best of my knowledge) PUNE main campus, Goa, Delhi and Hyderabad. It's one of the renowned and famous institute for civil engineer, mech. engineer and architect for management in construction and infrastructure. There are variety of courses here, for 1 and 2 years. One course is purely ment to continue one's family business and is of 1 year -this is something new in one's view.Remember one thing NICMAR is just a diploma course , you are not offered by any “degree” certificate. They basically have tie ups with MNCs and reputed firms and organizations ,thus one gets quite good placement here.Initally when it was formed fees was nominal and thus one used to get assured and strong package as limited seats were available.Present situation is different as there is huge intake in 4 campuses. Present fees is around 12-14 lakh INR.And average placement is around 5–7 lakh per anum.So its up to you, how you look at it.Campus life and other activities , traning programme, internships, practical knowledge is awsome. If your aim being a civil engineer is to get a good job(IN MANAGEMENT) than its best. But if you are just not sure to go in construction management career then I would recommend to get different idea rather than NICMAR.

How is the University of Windsor?

I have two social science degrees and two philosophy degrees from the University of Windsor, and I gained research assistant student employment experience in all my fields of study while I was an undergraduate student, which helped me to gain admission into graduate school and research employment appointments after I graduated.I especially enjoyed my philosophical studies at Windsor, and value the work experiences I gained during my studies which have helped me to obtain employment contracts after graduation. Every job I've had after my graduation was based on some sort of connection I had formed while a student. The Philosophy departments is one of the university's most reputable departments. The Philosophy professors are excellent, and highly reputable, internationally recognized experts in the field of argumentation theory, so it is a great place to take critical thinking, reasoning, and argumentation courses. The university has its own highly reputable academic journal Informal Logic, and its own Research Centre in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric. The university has various programs that allow students to work and gain experience before they graduate. I participated in the public service management internship program while I was a Political Science student; and I participated in the WorkStudy program for several years during my Psychology, Philosophy, and Political Science BA studies. One of the best work experience I got was for the academic Journal Informal Logic while I was a WorkStudy participant; this experience helped me to be admitted to a Master's program in Philosophy.Even after my undergraduate WorkStudy time limit ran out, the journal editor allowed me to continue working as a Research Associate under his research grant. And after I graduated with my MA in Philosophy, first one editor who I had previously worked for as an editorial assistant allowed me to work as a non-student in research, and another editor, who I had also previously worked for as an RA when I was an undergraduate student, later hired me to work in another non-student research appointment.I did both undergraduate and graduate RA and TA work, and I benefited from my studies at this university not only by developing strong academic and research skills, but also in terms of internships, work opportunities and employment. And, in my view that is one of the most important questions to consider when choosing a university - does it help students to gain work experience and form career connections? Many of the university programs are small enough to give students the chance to form connections through the student volunteer internship, and paid work programs such as WorkStudy, and through the TA/RA student work assisting professors. As well, the university gives tuition scholarships to Master's students for having an excellent grade average. So if one is able to excel at coursework and wants a Master's degree without having to go too much into debt, that is the university to go to.In sum, if one is a very good to excellent student the university of Windsor is the academic school to go to get student work experience that helps in being admitted to graduate school, and in forming connections that help with gaining employment after graduation.Another observation: I have 10 years of student experience at this university and I have seen and continue to see the university of Windsor is always constructing new buildings so it certainly does not give up on its aspiration to increase its ranking and to improve the study and work opportunities it offers its registered students. On a personal note: I would be unemployed right now, if I had not formed any connections while I was a student, connections which have helped me to obtain contract research work at this university. Of course, I am still hoping to attain permanent, full-time work, and am confident that the work experiences I gained in Windsor will help me to eventually realize my career goal. That is what a good student experience is all about.
