Perarivalan from Tamil Nadu, India was just 19 y.o when he was arrested in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assasination case on June 11, 1991. He was taken for a small interrogation and assured that he will be sent back the very next day, but the next day is yet to come for just buying 9V battery!The charge on Arivu was that he bought and supplied a 9-volt battery which was used to detonate the bomb that killed Rajiv Gandhi. A 9-volt battery is something that is commonly available in petty shops. And evidence on this charge was a testimony by a shopkeeper stating that Arivu bought the battery from his shop. The case was filed under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act [TADA]. Under this act a confessional statement recorded by a police officer is accepted as evidence. But we know what methods the police use to make those in custody act according to their wishes. Perarivalan too was subject to third degree physical and psychological abuses to sign already written papers as well as blank sheets. As per records, the confession statement that is in his name states that he bought the battery and gave it to the mastermind of the crime, Sivarasan. And it is based on this confession statement that he was given the death penalty.So how it was found that he’s innocent?After 26 years, on October 27, 2017, ex-CBI officer V. Thiagarajan (then SP, retired as ADGP) filed an affidavit in Supreme Court stating that he was the one who recorded the confession statement of Perarivalan and that he omitted a part of the confession statement. And what was that part? “I have absolutely no idea of the purpose for which the batteries he bought would be used for”. What is the importance of this part if it had been recorded? Thiagarajan himself states that if that portion had been recorded, a “mere act” of providing nine volt batteries would not make Perarivalan privy to the conspiracy to kill Rajiv Gandhi.His educational backgroundHe topped among all the prisoners who have ever appeared for the exam by scoring 91.33% in Class XII board exams. He secured a gold medal in a diploma course conducted by the Tamil Nadu Open University. He completed his Masters in Computer Applications. He runs a music band with his co-prisoners and entertains everyone which includes high ranked police officials to constables on duty, convicts with life sentence and those arrested for petty cases.Present scenarioHe may get released based on mastermind Sivarasan’s wireless message recorded on May 7, 1991 to LTTE top operative ‘Pottu Amman’ in which the former said “our intention is not known to anybody except we three” — himself, Subha and Dhanu, the suicide bomber which makes it clear that Perarivalan was not taken into confidence.He may get released, but can he get the life back which he has lost?Salute to our judiciary system which take so long to give verdict and few ostentatious officers who, under political pressure, tend to convict even innocent by subjecting them to physiological and psychological torture. This.I go to a liberal arts and science school in Central Ontario, which is based in a little city of just under 80,000 people. The local pro-life signs originally looked like this, with maybe 15 of them scattered around town.It includes a picture of a baby with the phrase, “Take my hand, not my life”, and a phone number for the local Peterborough Pregnancy and Support Services center for anyone who might want to chose another option other than abortion.That’s it.There are no graphic illustrations of torn up fetuses’, no accusatory attacking statements towards women, not even any urging to ask for donations. Literally just a sign saying, Hey! There is another choice! You don’t have to abort your baby!Regardless of these facts, every single one of these signs were graffitied across the entire downtown, in similar fashion to the first sign above.“Now why is this a social issue?” you might ask. “These are the actions of a minority, so why is society at large to blame?”.The answer lies in society's reaction to these vandal’s methods. No matter which side of the political spectrum you’re on, we can all agree that the destruction of public property is wrong. Yet this vandalism, and distortion of a message which is not even harmful, just contrary to popular university student opinion is being celebrated! Now I’m not one to make assumptions, but if I was going to bet about who spray painted, marked, and cut up these signs, you better believe my money is on a bunch of students from my university, (perhaps even from the gender studies department? but maybe I’m reading into it too much) and not the local permanent community.When these signs came up in a Facebook discussion among students my age, the vast majority of the students praised these acts of vandalism. Saying things like, “Any mention of abortion can trigger a women into mental breakdown”, and “This graphic message is unfit for the public. It’s right that it was covered up from the eyes of society!” and my favorite, “No one has the right to refuse the choice of women!”.Ironically, these people are missing the very obvious fact that by purposefully covering the phone number and message of these signs, they actually take away the mother’s choice to choose literally anything except abortion. Which was all the sign was promoting.Society’s problem today is that if anything is offensive, heck, if anyone disagrees with you, then they are a Nazi. And we are supposed to punch such Nazis.How about instead we have an open, honest and civilized conversation with our political opponents, rather than exclaiming, “They hate group X !”, and completely discounting what they have to say as hate speech and political heresy.
