PDF Editor FAQ
What is it like to be a train driver or a train guard in India?
My Dad served Indian Railways as a Guard for almost 20 yrs. I have had numerous hundred journeys in the guard's compartment with my Dad and his colleagues across several railway zones in mail express trains.Duties as goods guard are:a) Remain available at your headquarter residence as per First in First out register irrespective of any national holiday or any weather conditionb) Sign the call book which the call boy would bring 2 hrs before the goods train departure from headquarterc) Avoid "Not Found" situation wherein the department is assigning a goods train but you are not traceabled) Reach the goods train yard 15 minutes before the departure to take charge, fill kerosene for signal lamps etce) Remain in-charge of the goods train including all coaches, engine driver, assistant driver, its safety and security while in motiond) Maintain enroute station timings in the Guard's journal of worke) At the end of the goods train journey, prepare a 'ticket' listing all timings of all the stations and give it to the engine driverf) Sign in and Sign out the register at the headquarter station for the work trip. This enables mileage computation for the month. (NOTE: Guards and drivers receive mileage in their salaries apart from their regular pay)g) Submit the mileage sheet to the headquarter finance office for its approval so that the amount can be merged in the monthly salaryh) Carry all train safety measures within the black trunk on the trainDuties as passenger and mail express guard are similar to the above, with additional responsibilities like safety of passengers travelling on train, safe onboarding and offboarding of passengers at train halts. For passenger and mail trains, there is no call book and call boy system to wake the guards, guards and drivers follow their roster cycle at their headquarter. They may not need kerosene for lamps as they use the coach lighting system for the signals. A battery operated red/green signal is kept as standby in the trunk. Carrying two sets of identical glasses is a must for all running staff on trains. Carrying a First-Aid box is a must on passenger trains.Mail Express Guards have additional work for 'special trains'. After a Guard completes his duty and is relieved, he also needs to 'repeat the train timings' on phone to the section controller. There maybe questions asked as to why the train got late en route, or at a particular station. Valid reasons must exist which the guard notes down in his journal of work. Mail Express Guards also have couple of luggage compartments on the SLR coach which carry parcel/luggage. Receipts must be maintained along route, handed over to the guard relieving. Offloading parcel/luggage enroute and onloading new parcel/luggage depending on the weight limits is important task.Note: I will expand and improve this answer over the period of time after speaking with my Dad to see if I missed anything.
Do police officers have to put a certain amount of miles on their cruiser each day so the "higher ups" know they are not just hiding and they are patrolling?
We had a trip sheet that had to be turned in at the end of each shift. The starting and ending mileage had to be recorded. Additionally, the officer had to inspect the exterior of the vehicle for any damage. The final part of the form documented they checked all lights were working, and all assigned equipment was in the trunk. As a patrol sergeant, I didn't need to review these much—I was on the street with my officers. When I became the patrol division commander, the trip sheets became more critical. On an average midnight shift, I would expect at least fifty miles on the cruiser. If a sheet had less than twenty miles, I'd look at the reports to see if that explained why the miles were down. If that didn't explain it, I'd look at the last ten shifts to see if maybe the officer just had a bad night. If it were a pattern, I'd meet with the officer's sergeant and ask them to explain the lack of patrol miles. The worst answer I ever got from a sergeant was, "I don't know, but I'll look into it." That statement told volumes about why there was a lack of productivity. It was time to check the sergeant's trip sheets to see if he was out supervising his officers or sitting at the station.Officers do dumb things, like sleep on duty, when they know their sergeant is not going to check on them. We had one sergeant that followed all the rules to the extreme. One of our rules said patrol vehicles had to stay within the city's borders unless they advised dispatch over the radio. As a result, this sergeant would never cross the line and drive ten feet out of town. One of his lazy officers knew this and would disappear on the midnight shift. What he did was go a half-mile out of town, find a quiet place to park, and get a few hours of sleep. He was finally caught one night when the sergeant was off on vacation, and a more aggressive sergeant filled in. We’ll let you guess who that sergeant was. Once the cat was out of the bag, the officer had a sleep study and claimed a disability. The stunt saved him from punishment, but to accommodate his disability of falling asleep, he was transferred to a day time walking-beat, which he hated. The mileage alone that an officer put on the cruiser doesn't prove anything but sometimes warrants a closer look by a patrol commander. We later installed GPS and tracking devices on all patrol cars. The sergeant's vehicle had a laptop computer screen with a map of the city. The sergeant could watch all of the patrol cars moving around on the map in real-time. This made checking mileage obsolete, as a computer printout showed on a map every street the officer traveled on a shift. It also recorded the times and speed. These were great investigative tools I would later use during my years in internal affairs.Author of the 2020 book “One Cop’s Life” available on amazon
Don’t you think Maruti cars are bit over priced for the build quality and the features they offer?
I have previously owned quite a few maruti models in past as they were known to be best option for middle class and their value for money, which up to a large extent was true. Now after a gap of 5 years I again bought a new Maruti Swift hatchback, it was an obvious choice as I needed a small car for city drive which have a good mileage. The exact model of my new car is like this. Now what my new observations of this latest model is :The sheet of car is so very thin and delicate that even a young boy gives a small slap it will create a large dent into the body. I already have 4 dents in a month which were not caused due to any road accident but by small touching by two wheelers etc. My front bumper was changed in a week. I went to the dealer and complaint he said — Sir to increase the mileage the company has tried to low the car weight hence the sheet is very thin. You should have noticed during buying this car. I said I mean come on, how can such an old company do silly thing like this.I have heard that baleno’s condition is worse then swift. The company gives a standard condition mileage of about 29kmpl in diesel engine. The car even after third service has not given mileage more than 15kmpl.Guys these big corporations who have created life long brands are playing with our life and money. I suggest if you are planning to buy a car just don't go for Swift or Baleno.Cheers.
