Here is my two cents worth and I am going to stick my neck out here. This is of course my personal opinion based on my own experience in Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya over the last 30 years.To me a safari should be an experience first and foremost. In the bad old days the food was terrible, the accommodation most likely an old army tent but the experience incredible. It truly was an adventure. The focus was on the bush not the camp.Today's safari "camps" have enormous air-conditioned tents, huge swimming pools, cordon-bleu meals and bored jeep-jockeys as guides who race around like rally drivers looking for lions. The industry has been taken over by the hoteliers.If you would like to see lots of animals and stay in a magnificent five-star lodge then the best options are mainstream operators in Botswana, Kenya and South Africa.If you really want an adventure then a combined walking and canoeing safari or a horse riding safari in Zimbabwe are still the best despite the political situation. There are still "old-school" safari operators doing real multi-day walks and canoeing trips where you sleep under the stars and track lions, elephant, black rhinos and discuss everything from the butterflies to the edible plants. You also see nobody else. number of the old Zimbabwean Professional Guides have moved to Tanzania and are conducting safaris there too.Zimbabwe still has by far the highest minimum standards by far.
