Do expecting parents really have no preference for the gender of their child?

I wanted a boy. Really badly. Instead I got a girl.I wanted a son to teach all the things my dad taught me (and the stuff he didn’t). I had a very old Victorian notion about my child carrying on my last name. A girl couldn’t do that! When we found out we were having a girl, I wasn’t exactly upset but… I was disappointed that my selfish wishes were not coming true.3 Years later, I laugh at how stupid it was of me to care at all about the gender of my child. My daughter is one of the best things to happen to me and my wife. This little girl has brought so much joy, I can’t imagine life without her. If seeing her born wasn’t enough to completely change my mind, the first time she said “I love you daddy” sealed the deal.I’d say many expecting parents DO have a gender preference, even if they refuse to admit it.Post birth, most parents couldn’t care less.EDIT: By the way, she loves dinosaurs, monster trucks, star wars/trek, singing, and playing the piano. Turns out there are plenty of things we can share. This is going to be a really fun life.Edit2: Ok grammar Nazis. I fixed it thanks to a suggested edit. It is “couldn’t care less.” I am a big fan of Weird Al’s “Word Crimes” and I committed the crime myself. I’m an engineer, not an English teacher :)Update 1 year later: She still loves swinging

How should I respond to people who criticize me for naming my child Peekaboo?

First of all congratulations on your newborn baby.Fair enough, your kid, you can name him whatever you want.I think you shouldn't respond to anyone, but ask yourself, is their criticism valid?Have you considered what your child's experience throughout their life will be like?I can think of a hundred ways to make fun of and insult that poor kid and I feel pity for him. What do you think I would do if I hated him?Your name starts with pee and ends with boo (poo) urine and shit? Peekaticuh shitting sound peeka peeka peekaboo. How many times does he have to hear the same joke peekaboo I see you? Can you imagine when he is an adult in the workforce and his boss calls him peekaboo? Who would take him seriously. This kid will be bullied throughout his life until he changes his name.A child will grow to live up to his name. It's the first clue to his identity. What's your child's name referring to?No one has any business telling you what to name your child, but it's your business to love him and to give him a name that won't make his life miserable.Dude, even my daughter's name is unconventional and new to our society. AlShamsah, from my clan’s name, means solar or solar goddess. Its unique, but it's full of pride and people started copying it.If you must be original then you must make it a good name for their entire life. Not just good for infancy, your child will grow out of his name.I wish you would reconsider, but it's your child and your choice. So you are responsible for it.

Why are so many Christians opposed to transgender people?

As a Christian Mama who is dealing with a transgender child - I can say that I don’t hate anyone, no matter what they are doing in their life. I am extremely hurt that my beautiful baby girl decided at the tender age of 20 to try and change herself into a male.I’m constantly being told that I don’t deserve having her as my child (of course, they also use the incorrect pronouns) when telling me such things. I’m called psychotic and toxic by my daughter’s significant other.I’m from the old school … God made us exactly the way He wanted us to be. I gave birth to a baby girl and regardless of what she does, she can never fully change that. She will always be a female. All I can do is love her and pray for her. I’m not sure if she understands that I love her … she has quit talking to me. All because I won’t use the name she chose for herself and pronouns of the opposite sex when I speak to her.I can’t change who I gave birth to …. And I cannot condone what she is doing to herself. It breaks my heart that she won’t talk to me anymore, but I cannot call her someone she isn’t.Parents should be allowed to have feelings and convictions of their own on anything that involves their children. Yet, I’m looked at as being a selfish, hateful person. I gave birth to this person and I raised her, loved her, protected her, helped her with any and everything, etc. She is who she is to Mama. Changing my child is not an option for me. I love her with every ounce of my being, and I always will.
