In the priceless Simpsons short, “Time and Punishment,” Homer takes a defective toaster downstairs and accidentally creates a time machine. His inadvertent disturbance of a time line sends him careening from one alternate reality to the next, eventually landing him in a world that he accepts as “Ehh, close enough.”So let’s say precocious Lisa finds it, realizes what it is , and brings it to the attention of the scientific community.It violates conservation of mass and energy, all kinds of atomic symmetry rules, relativity, just a ton of laws. Plus you can go back in time and alter the present, so it violates logical principles as well.But it works. People try it and go back to observe dinosaurs and the building of the Pyramids. All those physical laws and logical principles count for nothing against the indisputable fact that it works. You have physical laws and logical principles that say it can’t work. It does work. Therefore your physical laws and logical principles are wrong.So empiricism without logical validation is a problem for the logicians. If it works, it works. Finding out why may be challenging, but empiricism rules.

Becoming aware most of the things I believed to be true are actually wrong was one of the most profound life-changing experiences for me. You heard it from someone? Because a lot of other people believe it? How confident are you in your belief? You're probably wrong.If you want to accurately get to the bottom of it, become an objective critical thinker. Gather evidence, look for sources of this evidence, throw out bogus or biased evidence (probably false evidence), don't let what you believe or want to believe influence (very hard to do). What direction does most of the real evidence lead to? This is probably the truth.Conclusion:- Research how tremendously flawed the human "believing brain" is at arriving at what's really true.- Research how to be a critical thinker.- Research scientific method (science really is the best method for figuring out what's probably going on, even if you don't "believe" it).
