Most people would say that the best way to learn a language is to immerse in it. That (alone) didn’t work for me. I believe immersion is only half the story, because if you only learn through immersion, you may (eventually) be able to understand and speak it, but you won't be able to read and write it.So in addition to immersion and practicing, I believe it is crucial to study with a teacher. And unless you are living in a country where you can take lessons in person, the best way is to take online language classes, with teachers who live in and speak the language native to that country.Let's get into what it's like, along with my favourite online language school.LIVE LINGUA – The Best Way to Learn How to Speak Spanish FluentlyIn my opinion, there’s no substitute for in-person (or online) language classes with a teacher. I watched my boyfriend spend a month learning French from scratch using an unpersonalized online course, and he doesn’t have much to show for it. The discipline to sit down daily and do the work of an online course with no accountability doesn’t work for many people.Working one-on-one with a language teacher is a whole different ballgame. They can answer your questions, no matter how trivial or advanced. They meet you at your level and move you forward in a style that will help you learn quickly and effectively. In my opinion, if you’re remotely serious about learning a language, you must take classes.Enter: Live Lingua. It’s an online language immersion school that offers Skype classes in a large collection of languages, including Spanish, English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. Learning Latin can be quick or take forever, depending on how much time per day you put into it. I am willing to bet that if someone focused themselves completely and had a good memory though, the following could happen in a month.If I were you, I’d go do the following things (these are the things that I did):Completely Master English GrammarI’d recommend a complex review of all of the parts of speech specifically: from what is an intensive pronoun, to a reflexive verb.Watch the “Basic Latin Essentials” playlist from LatinTutorial.This is a fantastic introduction into Latin grammar, which is the foundation from which everything learned afterwords will be based.Obtain and use one of the following textbooks: Wheelock’s Latin, Cambridge Latin Course, or Lingua Latina. Also, do #4 and #5 concurrently.Wheelock’s LatinThis is an introductory textbook that is fantastic for beginning Latin quickly and strongly. I recommend it fullheartedly and it is actually pretty cheap. Here’s the textbook, and here’s the workbook. (The third workbook edition aligns with the seventh textbook edition.) From a high school standpoint, it teaches Latin I and Latin II; and from a college standpoint, it teaches Beginning Latin I and (maybe?) Beginning Latin II.I would recommend you self-teach yourself from this textbook, doing as much as you can per day, and then that you give yourself daily vocabulary quizzes based on the words you learned in prior days at the beginning of each day, to keep them fresh.After you finish this textbook, you should continue your studies in Lingua Latina or Cambridge Latin Course (or some other textbook.)Cambridge Latin CourseThis is my primary textbook for learning Latin, and its North American edition (which I will be discussing) is divided into four different books to correspond to the different years of high school. This is unimportant and can be ignored, though the books should be studied in order.The format of the textbook is like a simplified Latin book. Each chapter, called a stage, has stories in Latin about Romans living in Pompeii, Britain, Alexandria, and Rome. This leads to large overarching story arcs that are very fun and educational for the student.If coming from Wheelock’s Latin, one should begin in Book III.Lingua LatinaThis is a great textbook, very similar to Cambridge Latin Course, except literally everything (from explanations to grammar) is in simplified Latin. It is still very clear though and the stories are great.Make lists of vocabulary from the textbooks as you go through, and study them. Perhaps you can use tools like Memrise.com or Quizlet.com to do so.Watch the rest of the playlists from LatinTutorial for grammar as necessary.
