Why do Nigerians live a Cosmetic lifestyle by renting apartments over 80 percent of their annual salary in Abuja?

There is no simple answer to this question so I will break my analysis to a few factors which contribute to this behaviour. Many people in Abuja are pretentious. They want to belong. Their proximity to wealthy people has made them deluded. They think if they can at least look like the rich people they see, then their poverty will disappear. But deep down, they really just don't want to be looked down on.It is also important to note that as a new city, a large percentage of Abuja residents are ‘new-comers’; wide-eyed young to middle-aged men and women hungry to climb the social ladder. In order, to get a taste of the National Cake, one must at least be inside the kitchen. Some Bujies,(that's what I call Abuja residents~I wish I could make it a thing) are not trying to prove anything, they honestly just want to be close to all the action. You cannot be a real estate agent for luxury apartments and be living in Gwagalada. OR Be a professional MUA living in Masaka. WHERE and HOW will you meet new clients? So even though, they are not making a lot of money, they see their rent as a form of investment, paying for the proximity to the right neighbours aka ‘good market’. It also helps to be less than an hour’s commute away from the city centre so that if any business comes up, you're easily available. It is difficult to put a definite figure to the annual salary of any individual Nigerian (especially a Bujy). I have a cousin who works for a mortgage bank with a salary of N50k a month. But he can easily afford a N600k flat. How? He makes some change via mortgage commissions. He does a lot of freelance selling of private land. He hustles! Today, he's selling shoes. Tomorrow, he's buying bitcoin. One ponzi scheme after another MLM network. To cap it all, my guy is an Uber warrior; I’m talking at least N5k a day. It's the same story for Abuja ladies, they always have some hustle aside from their ‘9–5’; working hard for extra income. I should also add that ‘sponsors’ or ‘mentors’ or ‘uncles’ abi ‘unkuus’ are really popular here; angel septuagenarians who take care of rent and car bills for solely philanthropic intent. If you try to rationalise a Bujy’s lifestyle by his/her salary, you’d be hopelessly lost.A lot of Abuja residents are civil servants that cart away public funds, their salaries are mere stipends compared to the real monies in their bank accounts. This is not so popular, but some tenants in Abuja pay a fraction of their actual rent. This is because there is ALOT of empty property in Abuja. Unscrupulous caretakers get tenants and start taking under the table baksheesh for property the landlord would rather leave empty. So sometimes, your friend is actually paying N500k and not the N1m he will have you believe. At the end of the day, I don't think this problem necessarily unique to only Abuja. I think it's what you should expect to see in any big city.‘Cosmetic lifestyle’ is such a funny expression. Lol.
