Should I prove everything in the section of honors & awards on my academic CV? I'm applying for graduate studies, and I had many honors during my previous studies, but I don't have the certificate for all of them.Do admission committees ask for them?

I can’t imagine anyone in the United States asking to see award certificates. Certificates are simply too easy to fake.On the other hand, if an otherwise-interesting PhD applicant claims an award from their home department, I am likely to scour the department’s web site for a list of award winners, or at least evidence that the specified award actually exists. Similarly, if an applicant claims an award from a conference or workshop, I will definitely scour the event’s web page for a list of award winners. Similarly, if an applicant claims to have earned “honors credit” in a class, or to have “graduated with honors”, I expect to see evidence of that in the applicant’s official transcript. If I can’t find an independent record of an award, I don’t conclude that the applicant is lying, but I also don’t give the award as much weight in evaluating the applicant.(Advice to department chairs, deans, and conference organizers: If you give out awards, and you want them to mean something, maintain an easily-googleable web page of award winners.)Same goes for research results. They help the most if I can read the actual paper myself for free, next if I can read the paper but only by paying for it, next if I can’t read the paper but I can at least see the title in a table of contents on some publisher’s web site, next if I can only see the title on a list of accepted papers or a local seminar schedule, and least if I can’t find external evidence of the results at all.(Hint: Put your papers on the web, and make sure google can find them. If your university doesn’t give you web space, there are lots of free web services.)tl;dr: No, don’t bother providing easily-faked evidence. Admissions committees should be able to find less-easily-faked evidence on their own.

I want to become a medical laboratory scientist. What are some things I should know about how to prepare and about the job?

Although most of their work is performed outside of the vision of their patients, medical laboratory scientists play an integral role in the medical field, one that assists both patients and their physicians collectively. Medical laboratory scientists (sometimes referred to as clinical laboratory scientists, or medical technologists) are, in effect, responsible for conducting a variety of tests on patient samples in an attempt to detect the absence or presence of a number of diseases. These medical professionals may examine a host of different types of samples, including various body fluids, feces, cells and tissues. Upon conclusion of a battery of tests, the medical laboratory scientist will then report back to the ordering physician and consult with him or her about the results. Some of these professionals may even be responsible for developing and evaluating new methods of testing, depending on their roles and positions. Those who work as medical laboratory scientists perform work that assists physicians in determining the correct course of action when treating patients; as such, these scientists have significant responsibilities and duties within the healthcare field. However, unlike physicians or other advanced healthcare professionals, medical laboratory scientists must only complete a four/five-year degree in order to practice in their field.Ultimately, a career as a medical laboratory scientist can be rewarding for a number of reasons.SKILLS AND TRAITS OF THE SUCCESSFUL MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTA medical laboratory scientist should possess certain key attributes in order to succeed in the field.Aptitude for basic sciences, laboratory instrumentation, and computers: A medical laboratory scientist will use a variety of different instruments and computer technology, and must utilize his or her knowledge of the sciences to perform tests correctly.Ability to perform tasks carefully and quickly: Tasks must be completed in an efficient and correct manner within specific time framesEmotional stability: Even though medical laboratory scientists deal with patients’ personal information, they must remain emotionally stable while conducting their work.Ability to think critically and problem solve: Answers to pressing questions may not always be readily apparent; as such, a medical laboratory scientist should be able to analyze the problem and come up with a legitimate solution.Ability to write well and communicate orally: Medical laboratory scientists may be required to write reports on their results, and often deliver information orally to physicians. Because of this, they should have excellent communication skills, both written and oral. These are only a handful of the useful skills possessed by medical laboratory scientists, as many others may be important throughout the course of work.STEPS TO BECOMING A MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTThere is no one set path that all individuals must pursue in order to become a certified medical laboratory scientist as that is dependent on the state or country of residence/training. However, in general, certain steps will ultimately remain the same for those interested in working in this field.Step One: To begin, students should obtain at least 5 credit passes in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology in ordinary level certificate in GCE, WAEC/NECO or what some countries call high school diploma. Because either of these is a requirement for admissions into virtually all four-year colleges or universities, they are, in turn, necessary for certification as a medical laboratory scientist. Furthermore, while not required explicitly, students in this period should familiarize themselves with a number of subjects, including chemistry, biology, and other life sciences.Step Two: Once a student has completed high school, he or she should enroll in a four/five-year accredited college or university and pursue a bachelor’s degree, one of the requirements of becoming a certified medical laboratory scientist.Step Three: During the four/five-year degree program, students should be willing to perform additional hands-on training, which may include hospital postings and internships with other medical laboratory scientists, or even volunteer programs at local labs or hospitals. This will provide a wealth of practical knowledge, and may ensure the student has ample connections in the medical field when it comes time to find a job after obtaining a certification.Step Four: Once the student graduates and has obtained the necessary work experience, he or she should begin the application process with the country's professional licensing board in order to become certified as a medical laboratory scientist.Step Five: Finally, once the individual obtains certification as a medical laboratory scientist, he or she should begin searching for relevant employment in a clinical laboratory. After obtaining a certain amount of additional work experience, the medical laboratory scientist may apply for additional specialties, including in blood banking, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, toxicology, or a multitude of other areas.
