Most spies do not disguise as locals. It is very difficult to train somebody as a local. Imagine training somebody and their cover is blown by the first local kid. So what do the spies do? They don’t try to disguise that they are foreigners. So what common professions are they involved in? Whatever is allowed by local law. Typically countries issue several type of visas:Student & pedagogical visa: if you have a youngish spy, enroll him/her in a local university. Preferably elite one. Same with being a professor or researcher. You can recruit students and professors from elite universities.Business and Work visa: These ones are the best type of visa, as they have less restrictions than other visas. Most of the times you just need to work in a company that has special relationship with your country’s spy service. Even better if you can become investor and start your own business.Diplomat & International Organizations visa: Diplomats are self explanatory. Working for an international organization you get similar treatment as a diplomat. In many situations, you could get a diplomatic passport. This category, I would assume would be popular, but also has a lot of scrutiny.Volunteers: Volunteers are notorious for being spies. For example, Russia kicked out USAID volunteers several years back. They were branded as spies.Member of family: being married to a local has certain advantages as you can live in that country for a very long time.Retirement visa: I guess there is no such thing as a former spy.Religious Visa: this one is also a good possibilityJournalist visa: (thank you for reminding Ilker Kamadan) a person whose occupation is to go and meet different people is a great cover, but it also attract undue attention since it is so convenient.From all the above, I think a spy would be the most productive on Business and Member of Family visa. I believe US citizen (with US passport) can obtain a 30-day tourist visa (exemption stamp) upon arrival, and each stamp can be extended for another 30 day. I believe there’s a limit amount of time within one year that you can do that, though it’s still not a bad idea to come here and seek for other opportunities for your visa.You can obtain the tourist visa at any Thai embassy prior coming to Thailand. That should give you 60 days upon arrival, which can also be extended for another 30 days. I would suggest that you, at least, ask for 6 months tourist visa. If granted, within the 6 months period, every time you arrive in Thailand you’ll get a 60 days tourist visa, which is again, can be extended for another 30 days, but you can not stay in Thailand for longer than 90 days consecutively per each arrival (I think you can possibly ask for 7 days or more on top of the extension if you have a very good reason to stay, having to see a doctor, etc.).You can also try to get the education visa, which I believe would at least let you stay in Thailand for 1 year and no longer than 2, but you’ll have to renew the visa every 90 day within the 1 year period. Single re-entry permit will allow you to leave and come back to Thailand once, and multiple re-entry will allow for any numbers of leaving while the current visa is valid.Thai visa can be very confusing, even for me.
