My 9 year old daughter is addicted to her phone, won’t give me the password and will throw a fit if I try to take it away from her. What should I do?
She's nine… turn it off. You are the adult, she’s the child. You pay for the phone… simply shut the thing off.She doesn't have to give you the phone, without service and power, it becomes a meaningless paperweight.I'd let her throw her fits, as time goes on she will calm down. In the meanwhile I'd get her busy with extracurricular activities to keep her busy and redirect her energy.Cooking, dancing, painting, gymnastics, swimming, the YMCA, theater, camp, etc. Try stuff and stick with each for a month or two, something will stick. Get her passionate and interested in something else, she'll need the phone less and less.
Do people judge you because of your music taste?
Yes, fairly often.I have rather wide tastes. The first band I ever was ABBA, the second Queen and the third Judas Priest. So I got progressively heavier (although there’s a gay theme running here) over about 6 months. I like rock music. I like electronica. I like disco. I like punk. I like pop. I like ska. I grew up in the late 70s listening to new wave and post punk pop. My brother listened to metal and hard rock. My sister listened to punk and reggae. I grew up with very varied influences. My school band did Queen and Eagles covers, with the occasional Led Zep track thrown in. My suggestions of doing songs in a reggae style, or using disco beats never went down well. After I started putting covers by the Jam and the Cure into our repertoire I got accused of being into “weird music” and it killed the band.As an adult and gay man I often find people assume that I’ll be into cheesy pop. I find it odd that people should think I would like Steps or YMCA just because of my sexuality. But just because I don’t have every S Club 7 doesn’t mean I dislike anything a bit camp, and people seem a bit surprised to find I like Kylie and Erasure, which if course some straight friends find exactly what they expect.I have some friends who are heavily into house and clubbing music and I’ve been dragged to clubs a few times. A friend of mine, who knows I’m not into clubbing but like guitar music, can’t get the idea that, as I played in a rock band, I must be into Bon Jovi and Meatloaf, which is apparently what she thinks rock music is!So I’ve been judged for liking rock by clubbers; for liking disco by rock fans; for not liking camp music by gay people; and for liking typically gay music by straight people.I also really like The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams, but none of my friends have a clue what this is!Fortunately, I don’t care what people think about me.
