The rules of a hangout movie, as set by former talent George Lucas, in my mind are as follows:It must happen over the course of 1-4 days.It should have an awesome soundtrack.It should happen at a high school, or a reunion of some sort.It should have a huge awesome cast who are now way totally famous.It should have some existential life crisis or review of one's current, past and future.Hopefully, there is some partying and unexpected hookups.High School Hangout Movies (we have one for every era):The granddaddy of them all, that sort of inspired, in my opinion, the entire genre, is my now arch nemesis, George Lucas's American Graffiti (1973 movie)Back when he was talented and had people who he would listen to constructively, being young and new to the game, he put together a fascinating character driven political and social expose. It had an amazing cast, and was about graduation night at the dawn of the Vietnam era when innocence was being lost to war. I believe it also was the first movie to have a rock soundtrack running from beginning to end. It also was his introduction to a young carpenter named Harrison Ford (actor) who had a small part as a legendary drag racer. Ron Howard (actor, director) got his first movie gig. It was the invention of the checklist mentioned above.Dazed & Confused (1993 movie)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106677/Richard Linklater is pretty masterful at this: The adventures of incoming high school and junior high students on the last day of school, in May of 1976.Matthew McConaughey (actor)'s best work. This movie keeps getting older, and he still looks the same aaaaage. (Half the cast ended up on Six Feet Under (TV series) at some point.) It too, has the soundtrack from beginning to end. It's a Multicharacter teenage comedy about high school graduates with different agenda of life on graduation night. He is sent on a mission to a small Detroit suburb, Grosse Pointe, and, by coincidence, his ten-year high school reunion party is taking place there at the same time. Dark, twisted, and awesome. A group of seven former college friends gather for a weekend reunion at a posh South Carolina winter house after the funeral of one of their friends. To get the cast to bond, he had them live in the house they were shooting in and bond for a couple weeks before any filming took place. The night before shooting they all stayed in character. This was the first movie to have a real soundtrack release that made movie producers realize the potential of soundtrack albums. Kevin Costner did his best work and got to be a dead body.Checklist: DOUBLE Epic Soundtrack, dead friend college reunion, 3 nights, partying, life analysis, EPIC cast, check. Bonus points for kinkiness.Peter's Friends (1992 movie)Six former college friends, with two new friends, gather for a New Years Eve weekend reunion at a large English countryside manor after ten years to reminisce about the good times now long gone.Think The Big Chill, with AIDS.
