PDF Editor FAQ
Have you ever walked into your home and known something wasn't right? What happened?
My wife and I returned from a long late spring weekend and there was a fairly large dead branch that looked like it had fallen and partially blocked our driveway. It was big and noticeable but not really blocking the access so it wasn’t a big concern just ugly and a nuisance and I was going to have to hire someone to clean it up. We drove around the branch and walked up to our front door. We have a deck in front of our house and my wife noticed some patio furniture had been moved slightly. I thought maybe some kids had been around while we were gone and wasn’t very concerned about it, there didn’t seem to be anything else disturbed. We found a contractors card stuck in the front door, that was a little surprising but I thought maybe he’d seen the branch and wanted to clear it away. I wasn’t at all concerned but my wife wouldn’t let it go and kept looking around. After about 30 minutes she called me out and pointed up at the underside of our roof, which overhung by a few feet, I looked up and saw daylight between the sheets of plywood underlayment “is that the way that’s supposed to be?” She asked. Now our house is on a hill and nobody can actually see the roof unless they walk uphill into our backyard, when I went up the hill to check I saw that the ENTIRE roof over the plywood WAS GONE. What the hell? Who would steal a roof? I wondered if there was a market for recycled shingles I didn’t know about. I guess I was lucky because we almost never walk very far up that hill and I would never even have known the roof was gone until winter, 5 months later (it basically never rains in summer in Sacramento,) if my wife hadn’t investigated. Somehow I put 2 and 2 together and figured out the contractor who left the card might have something to do with this. I wasn’t very happy and I called the guyMe: This is (me) and I live at (address) do you know why I’m calling you!Contractor: Yeah, I took your roof, Sorry.Me: (slightly stunned) Yeah! you took my f*ckin’ roof!! What am I supposed to do about that?Contractor: I’m really sorry but we’ll replace your roofMe: (somewhat mollified) What the hell happened, why would you take a roof!Contractor: (this was when text messaging was a completely new concept) I sent my guys a text message of the address where we’re replacing a roof and I was one digit off!Me: (amazed) Don’t you have to have some kind of confirmation?Contractor: (still unfazed) It just happens every once in a while.Me: (more amazed) Every once in a while? You’re kidding! How often?Contractor: Oh I don’t know once or twice a year.I couldn’t believe it, I still don’t know how big his company was but he must have been doing pretty well if he could afford to give a way 2 free roofs a year. At any rate they replaced my neighbors roof they originally contracted for (1 digit off!) and 2 days later replaced mine. No harm no foul I suppose and I ended up getting a new roof out of the deal, oh and he cleaned up the branch also, one of his trucks had knocked it down when they took the roof on their first visit
Should President Trump continue to tolerate California's defiance of his policies, or send troops to occupy Sacramento, and arrest Governor Brown, pending trial for sedition and treason?
Should President Trump continue to tolerate California's defiance of his policies, or send troops to occupy Sacramento, and arrest Governor Brown, pending trial for sedition and treason?Yes, he should. Because:The First Amendment. Read it;The Tenth Amendment. Read it;The Fourteenth Amendment. Read that, too, along with its case law;The Supreme Court’s 1957 decisions regarding the Smith Act, particularly Yates vs. United States, making talking about sedition in theory, without actively inciting it, harmless from the law;Trump does not have the power to have Governor Brown arrested, charged and tried. That’s the job of law enforcement and the Judicial Branch, neither of which reports to the President. Read up on the three branches of government;Troops are not law enforcement, except in times of martial law. In the absence of an effective act of war from California, or such massive uprising that local peace officers are unable to cope, martial law is unlikely to be declared. If Trump tried, without those triggers to justify the declaration, he would almost certainly be rebuffed by his own military, despite being nominally Commander in Chief: there would be, in effect, a military coup and Trump, not Brown, would be facing treason and sedition charges. Thus, sending troops to occupy Sacramento, much less to arrest its Governor, is very highly unlikely to occur. The question appears to assume that Trump is already effectively Dictator of the United States, and has powers to suppress free speech. Fortunately, its own Constitution and internal checks and balances should prevent this.If I, a Brit, know these things, why don’t you, anonymous questioner? Unless, of course, you hail from somewhere slightly to the east of Finland…
What are some US cities similar to Sacramento, CA?
I grew up in Sacramento and returned after I retired. I had a job where I had to travel a lot so I have seen many cities. Here's my list.Portland, Oregon. Why? It's a river city like Sacramento. Has a moderate climate. Has trendy downtown restaurants. It's liberal. It's a college town with 22 private and public universities, including the University of Portland and Portland State University.2. Austin, Texas. Why? It is liberal. It is also a State Capitol. It has a lovely riverside parkway like Sacramento and it is a university town. It is the home of the University of Texas at Austin.Technically, our local university, UC Davis, is just across the Sacramento River, but we have 3 community colleges. Sacramento State University, the UC Davis Medical Center, the University of the Pacific law school and branches of other institutions, such as the University of San Francisco.3. Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Why? Like Sacramento is a river town. A drive on roads along side or on top of levees feels like home. Like Sacramento and the other cities on this list, it has a racially diverse population. Like Sacramento, it is a college town. It is the home of the University of Louisiana and Southern University. It has great restaurants. And it is the State Capitol.
