What is AP Human Geography?
AP Human Geography studies the interaction between humans and the world. That’s why we call it “human geography.”The discipline of geography is the study of the world. There are two major branches of geography, physical and human. Physical geography studies the physical elements of the world, such as soil, plate tectonics, climate, etc. However, human geography studies what humans have done with the world, such as population, urbanization, culture, etc. Of course, there is overlap as they are just two wings of the same bird. The AP Human Geography course covers the following topics, and the exam tests not just your knowledge and understanding of those topics, but your ability to recognize the interactions between them.Introduction to Geography (globalization etc.) - how do humans relate with the world? Why study Geography?)Population and populations in transition - why do some countries have more people than others?Migration - why do humans move about?Culture - what really is “pop culture?” Why do some cultures spread more than others?Language - how did languages come about? Did English really evolve from German?Religion - why is religion practiced where it is? Why is Malaysia predominantly Muslim, but neighboring Thailand mainly Buddhist?Ethnicity - why are ethnicities where they are?Political geography - how many countries are there? Why do they have certain shapes?Development - why are some countries or areas more developed than others?Agriculture - why are crops grown where they are? What is the difference between farming in low-income countries vs. high-income countries?Industry - why are so many goods made in China? How do they get all over the world?Services - why are stores located where they are?Urban patterns - why are cities laid out the way they are?If you’re the type of person who enjoys watching YouTube videos such as those by Wendover Productions or Half as Interesting about fun geography, or playing games such as GeoGuessr, you will enjoy the AP Human Geography course.

What would you do if you were president?
Welcome to my Answer!Oh my, oh my. Definitely not all of the policies I’m about to mention would fall under this description, and almost all of the ones that fit it are at the very end of this answer, but I have quite a few bold, sometimes controversial, political proposals, and I’m being serious. *prepares for angry comments from angry trolls* Anyway, assuming I even make it past the Primaries, let alone win the Election itself, I don’t get assassinated for any of them within a month after my inauguration, here are some of the many political proposals that’d earn my firm endorsements.Eliminate the Electoral College and replace it with the national popular voteThe Electoral College is an all-around horrible system for choosing the President, no matter how you look at it, and no matter how hard you try to justify it’s perpetuation. Here are some reasons aside from the obvious (that it allows Presidential candidates to win without the national popular vote)Many would argue small states need representation, and said people do have a strong argument. However, in reality, the Electoral College gives an unfair advantage to those states without incentivizing politicians to listen to their needs. For example, when in recent political history have you seen presidential candidates hold massive campaigns in Vermont and Wyoming, the smallest of the small states? Don’t remember, right? Because it hasn’t happened. Rather, the Electoral College encourages politicians to focus on swing states of all sizes, which brings us to my second argument for eliminating the antiquated way we choose our President. This also means there’s no need to be concerned about the evil Globalist, Marxist, and anti-American Californians and New Yorkers gaining much more of an advantage than they already have (in case you couldn’t tell, I was being sarcastic with all those crazy adjectives)Second, most, if not all, state borders are extremely arbitrary from a cultural and political perspective, which makes the Electoral College a godawful arbitrary system of choosing Presidents by extension. Also, why should the importance of a vote from a person in say West Wendover, Nevada matter far more than a vote from a person in say Wendover, Utah? In my humble opinion, it must take some truly impressive mental gymnastics to explain that. The Electoral College is essentially state-level gerrymandering. Check out these cool links out if you’re interested in learning more:Clinton would have won if the United States looked like thisHow 13 Rejected States Would Have Changed The Electoral CollegeThird, I believe that your vote should matter when we pick our Presidents, even if you’re a Democrat in Wyoming or a Republican in Hawaii. I know, isn’t that a pretty extreme and radical idea that’s too much for mainstream politics? There are more registered Republicans in California than in Texas. There are more registered Democrats in Texas than in New York. I could go on.Amend the US Constitution to federally put an end to Congressional GerrymanderingThis shouldn’t be controversial to any self-respecting voter, especially if you believe that voters should pick their representatives, and not vice-versa. Partisan gerrymandering robs voters of their rightful power, and gives power-hungry politicians in the majority party of their state’s legislatures the ability to redistrict political opponents out of power. Now, how would I go about ending partisan gerrymandering, and what form of redistricting would I endorse as an alternative in this hypothetical constitutional amendment? Well, in the state of Colorado, the redistricting process is strictly independent, and districts are drawn by geographers from both political parties. I believe this would be a good model for the entire USA to adoptDepoliticize and restructure the Supreme Court without amending the ConstitutionIn the USA, Supreme Court Justices are household names. Sandra Day O’Connor, Antonin Scalia, David Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, you-name-it. Why? No disrespect to any of the judges, but why would anyone be so obsessed with a few normal, unelected officials who happen to have exceptional expertise of the Constitution? Well, the judicial branch in this country is a nightmarishly partisan circus that anyone even remotely interested in politics pays extreme attention to. In some countries, such as Canada, the mere thought of a politician appointing judges based on predictions on how said appointees would rule is horrifying. Now, how would I go about fixing this mess, instead of whining about how horrible and messed up things are? Most obviously, I’d endorse mandatory retirements for old Supreme Court Justices, most likely anywhere between 70 and 80 years of age. This could be done without an amendment, because nothing in the Constitution explicitly and indisputably says that Supreme Court Justices have the right to serve for life. While they’d alleviate such issues, term limits wouldn’t completely eliminate partisan fights over Supreme Court nominations. How would I fix that? Well, fortunately enough for me, the Constitution doesn’t specify how many judges can serve on the Supreme Court, or any federal court for that matter. It also doesn’t specify how the courts must be structured. Anyway, I’d support something somewhat similar to what the UK already does, nominate judges using an independent commission, and confirm judges with the unanimous approval of the existing judges on the relevant court.Construct a high-speed rail system comprehensively connecting major cities in the USA, Canada, and MexicoImagine being able to go from say Mexico City to Montreal by high-speed train, instead of having to go on an arduous and expensive road trip or a stressful flight, while helping to save the environment in the process. Imagine bringing appropriately-populated regions of North America up to speed with the Old World in terms of passenger rail, as they deserve. This would all be possible in reality if the USA had high-speed rail, like most of the developed world and even a handful of developing countries. In the words of Pete Buttigieg “I just don't know why people in other countries ought to have better train service and more investment in high-speed train service than Americans." Why should Americans have to settle for less in terms of transportation? Now, some might argue that the USA doesn’t have the right population density, and that the terrain is unworkable in some areas. However, Japan has one of the most famous networks in the world. You know what else Japan is famous for? It’s rugged geography and terrain. And to address the population density, I’ll admit the truth, some of the more remote cities in the USA will probably never see high-speed rail for that exact reason. However, there are “megaregions” with relatively high levels of population density where high-speed rail could easily work.Something like the map above would be the endgame of my high-speed rail proposal (Source: Google Image Result for https://preview.redd.it/ybjv3ax3pdy41.png?auto=webp&s=2fe5a32ef1de803b8408654f8ae6fedeccb2c41d)Eliminate the PennyAs with ending partisan gerrymandering, I firmly believe that this proposal shouldn’t be controversial. (Who knows, maybe there’s a secretive, shady penny lobby that I’m totally unaware of…) Pennies cost more to produce than they’re worth, and their production causes great harm the environment. Furthermore, it’s not like the laws of physics mandate the existence of the penny; Canada has already gotten rid of the penny.Other Noteworthy ProposalsI have a few more proposals I’d endorse, and I can explain them in the comments or add detailed explanations for each of them if necessaryAbolish private prisonsAbolish the death penaltyFederally tax carbonRaise taxes on the extremely rich and lower taxes on the middle-class and the poorFederally legalize marijuanaGo through with the long overdue metrication process (see Ben Norton's answer to What is an unpopular opinion you hold?)Encourage more states to implement ranked-choice votingMake Election Day a national holidayPass a constitutional amendment overturning Citizens UnitedReallocate funding from retributive justice to rehabilitative forms of justiceResearch different forms of universal healthcare from abroadRestore net neutralityFootnotesDodson, Dave. “The US Should Amend the Constitution to Put an End to Gerrymandering and Protect Our Democracy.” Business Insider, Business Insider, 15 Sept. 2019, The US should amend the Constitution to put an end to gerrymandering and protect our democracy.Guzman, Joseph. “Newly Minted Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Wants US to Lead World in High-Speed Rail.” TheHill, 5 Feb. 2021, Newly minted Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg wants US to lead world in high-speed rail.Ingraham, Christopher. “How the Electoral College Gerrymanders the Presidential Vote.” The Washington Post, WP Company, 29 Apr. 2019, http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/11/29/how-the-electoral-college-gerrymanders-the-presidential-vote/.“Small States Are Not Helped by Current System.” National Popular Vote, 15 Nov. 2020, Small States Are Not Helped by Current System.Yang, Andrew. “The Penny Makes No Cents - Yang2020 - Andrew Yang for President.” Yang2020, 2020, The Penny Makes No Cents - Yang2020 - Andrew Yang for President.
