PDF Editor FAQ

Does New Zealand have a good job potential for M&E engineers (how foreigners can reach)?

Thanks for A2A.I would say yes. I currently work with 2 electrical engineers, 1 from India and 1 from Pakistan, both in their first roles after migrating. Both are doing fairly well, but both have some issues to cope with which I’ll come back to later.Firstly, the standards for qualifications vary from country to country, so there is often a requirement to have your qualifications assessed by and NZ governing body to ensure that the meet an appropriate standard. M&E qualification from India typically do meet the required standard. Then, with some work experience, which you appear to have, you are likely to qualify to lodge an expression of interest to the immigration department. So, lets assume that your qualifications and work experience are recognised, that your English skills are deemed to be good enough and that you have sufficient funds to travel to NZ and to support yourself until you can get a job, you will still have some challenges to face. Most employers prefer employees to have what is commonly termed as ‘local knowledge’. By that they generally mean an understanding on NZ standards and codes of practice. Volts, amps, ohms etc. are the same everywhere in the world, but how you are required to deal with them varies, and this can take a while to learn. It’s therefore common for new migrants to only be offered fairy junior positions until they have built up the required levels of experience. As to the issues I mentioned my colleagues having, this is more complex. Both are from very large cities and their lifestyle prior to emigrating revolved around big city activities. Both initially moved to Auckland and would have preferred to stay there, however, they simply could not get work in Auckland and have had to move to a relatively small rural town to get their current jobs and the lifestyle here has been difficult for them to adjust to. There are no shopping malls, most places close in the early evening and unless your into going to the pub, rugby club, playing golf, fishing, hunting or going for a walk in the hills etc, there’s not a great deal to do. This is the bit they struggle with most, but there’s also the fact that they are a very long way from friends and family so they are culturally quite isolated and lonely. My advice to them is to just stick it out and to take advantage of the relatively cheap cost of living in this fairly rural area while they build up their savings. At some point in the future they can then look for jobs in a bigger town or city.My point here that while you probably can migrate (post Covid) you really need to understand what you’re getting into and that there are up-sides and down-sides.Best of luck.
