Short of hiring Jerrod Kushner to liaise/collude with Vladimir Putin to spread the word of my queeritude…there is little more I could do to avoid accidentally coming out.However, most students, look at me and see a fairly bear-esque creature who is old enough to be their dad, and has a similar over affinity for golf polos with the institution's logo and khaki slacks. Because of my fear of needles, I am not pierced, tattooed or decorated in ways many of my peers are.In short, I think I come across as their dad or uncle might… This was brought home to me about two years ago… I was teaching a section of new student orientation and I made a comment in the course of giving directions for a survey that, ‘my husband says…’ then I left the room for them to answer the survey after assigning a student to collect and deliver the responses to the research team in a university office.Accidentally, two of my students in the class were ally members of my lgbt student group, so they knew about who I was and had actually met my husband at a group meeting 2 weeks previously. Both came to my office separately to let me know what happened after I left.About half of the class were shocked that I was gay, the other half were shocked that my husband was studying to be a minister. When one of the two students said something along the lines of how he knew that I was gay because I advised the student group his older sibling was one of the group’s officers in, they almost universally thought that it was ‘really cool.’Shockingly, even the class conservative said he was glad that I was married! By coming out, I had, suddenly, become cooler and easier to relate to. The number of my students who visited me in office hours went through the roof and the things they were willing talk about… whoa! Thank God I have a counseling degree!Both of my students who already knew, were shocked that this was so shocking to their peers. All in all though, it was an amazingly positive experience!

America? No. ‘Murica? Yes.The U.S. is a big place and every state sets their own separate gun laws and many cities within those states have laws that vary from those of the state itself. I live in Ohio. It is a legal open carry state. I could wear a gun in a holster legally in most places within Ohio. I certainly would not try it in Downton Columbus, Cincinnati, or Cleveland. It is fairly rare these days so you would likely get a lot of unwanted attention.Just remember…Out of sight…Out of mind.
