Grid TechniqueOne of the easiest ways to transfer your design onto the large wall surface is by using grid. It comes really handy to split your sketch into smaller parts and do your work one step at the time. You don’t want to lose yourselves in a big picture. It takes more time to be sure, but better safe than sorry, because when it comes to the large-scale projects the use of grid is the best way to ensure the perfection of your piece. If you decide to go with the grid method, the first thing you need to do is to split your sketch into the grid squares in proportion to the wall and planned surface of your future mural. Then you should replicate the squares from your referential drawing into corresponding squares on the wall surface. After your picture is set you can erase the lines and you’re ready to paint and bring some color into your design. Another useful method for really large projects is the use of a professional projector, which can be costly, so you might skip this option for a while and consider acquiring a projector once again when you are well known and preferably well-off.Stencil TechniqueStencils are one of the most popular technique of urban artists worldwide. Artists love stencils because they are fast and easy to use but the process of creating a stencil is neither quick nor simple.The creation of printable stencilsLet’s say you’ve been visited by the muse and have a pretty good idea about the design of your future stencil. The design depends mostly on your skills but it is recommend to cut down details to a minimum and to stick to black and white for better visibility. It’s important to remember that you must have an image that remains in one piece when everything that needs to be removed gets cut out. If you’re using an existing image make sure you first delete the background as it only gets in the way. It’s recommendable to make it in black and white and to sharpen the contrast of the image. Obviously, Photoshop is the favorite tool for image editing but you can use any imaging editor that has a Brightness/Contrast tools. The contrast must be set in a way that the image is still recognizable but there’s a distinctive difference between the colors. It’s all in the details, but make sure that while making a stencil you always keep the big picture in mind. Try to visualize the final result every step of the way. As humans computers aren’t perfect so make sure you recheck the image after printing and possibly outline the image areas in which the contrast remained ill-defined.Cut it Out and SprayNow you’ve got your design on regular printing paper. Looks great, but you’ll have to cut out the shapes before it can be properly used. In order to do that attach the design to a selected material. You can use a tape or spray adhesive to attach the paper on either cardboard, paper, laminate, plastic, clear acetate, etc. The choice is difficult but must be wise. Paper is easy to cut but a paper stencil can be used only once. Stiffer materials are harder to cut but they can be used multiple times before they deteriorate. While cutting make sure to cut the most difficult and most detailed parts first while the blade is the sharpest. X Acto knives are most commonly used for this purpose but any type of utility knife will do fine as long as it’s sharp. Never, never use a dull blade! A blunt knife needs to be pushed through the stencil which will eventually make you slip and cut something you didn’t mean to. Keep yourself focused and your hands steady and soon you’ll have a stencil ready to use. All you have to do now is get your stencil and a can of spray paint and hit the streets.Where to Find Printable Stencils?If you’re in a mood for painting walls but temporarily out of inspiration, don’t panic! And the main thing to have in mind if you’re painting a large wall surface is that choosing the right paints is equally important as calculating the right amount.Tools for Mural PaintingFirst of all you need to have something to apply paint with and this is a choice which depends on your method of work and again the size of your project and surface of the wall. If you don’t go with the stenciled murals and spray paint you will definitely need good quality brushes, paint sprayer even rollers and roller extensions. You also shouldn’t forget ladders for reaching those inaccessible places, additional water and some markers or a small brush to highlight the details.It is better to start painting background and large areas of color first, and leaving your paint to dry to avoid blending of the separate colors.
