Supernatural atribution of midwives skills (i.e. accusations of witchcraft) were partially due to this use of ergot, which was difficult to dose because of natural variations in potency. Overdose could hasten the death of both mother and child, while marginally excessive doses sometimes induced convlusive ergotism, the same condition that precipitated what are commonly called “The Salem Witch Trials”. A midwife named Margaret Jones was the first person executed for witchcraft in Massachusetts in 1648.[2]However, in 1557, botanist Adam Lonicer[3] published a paper which actually examined the validity of ergot for those purposes and found that it was indeed valid. Despite the fact that Adam Lonicer was also a physician, ergot wasn't commonly accepted by medical science as anything other than a deadly toxin until 1777 when it finally entered medical literature as having experimentally validated value in obstetrics.[4] That delay, arguably contributed to the accusations of witchcraft in Massachusetts based on the theory that medical understanding of the midwives’ use of ergot could have countered the pejorative supernatural explanation.Ergot was then powdered and mixed in batches to equalize the active content throughout the batch until Ergometrine/Ergonovine, the active ingredient of ergot for obstetric use, was finally isolated in 1936. Both of which drastically decreased the risk of side effects. Ergometrine remained the only viable medication for inducing labor until 1953 when it was replaced by synthetic Oxytocin (Pitocin). It remains a viable medication to counteract postpartum hemorrhaging.Ergot was additionally found to be very effective in treating migraines during the mid 1800s due to it's vasoconstictive properties.
