Wednesday, 22 April 2020Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22, is usually commemorated with outdoor activities demonstrating support for environmental protection. These include planting trees, collecting roadside or beach trash, and conducting, or participating in, recycling and conservation programs. While the coronavirus lockdowns will restrict some of the usual activities, organizations, educators, and activists worldwide have devised numerous ways to mark the 50th anniversary of this all-important holiday, which is dedicated to climate action this year, without leaving the comfort of your homes. The first thought would be that it was established to spread awareness of the importance of conservation of the planet.Upon further research, I discovered that this reason is correct, and celebration dates back to fairly recent times – 1970 to be exact. It was right then that people had started realizing the destruction that was and would be created by man's selfish ways.The foundation of Earth Day is mainly attributed to US Senator Gaylord Nelson, an environment activist, who was eager to focus the politicians’ attention to the environment and address related issues.The event that spurred him to act was a major oil spill in Wisconsin in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by campus activism, wherein students started the anti-war movement, he turned to people power. He proposed to allocate a day to spread awareness on the ecological issues by organizing a “national teach-in on the environment”, wherein people from all over the world would participate.His initiative met with immense success and the Earth Day plan was broadcast widely. Thus, on April 22, 1970, an estimated number of 20 million Americans assembled together at parks, on the streets, etc. to raise their voice to fight the environmental issues in cities, states, the country and the planet at large. They sought action on an individual level as well as from their elected representatives.As per Wikipedia, the origin is in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco wherein peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to celebrate and honour the Earth as well as the idea of peace. This day was to be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.While the beginning is in the US, it was Denis Hayes, founder of Earth Day Network and coordinator of the first Earth Day in 1970, who took the concept to a global level.

In 1970 nearly 20million population that is 10% of the total population started movement aiming the Climatic Protection. This is caused then by the oil spills, smog and deforestation and many forests caught fire.Image source : GoogleSince then every year they are making the movement and every country started accompanying them.
