As a new, but late, participant in the Kindle ebook publishing world, I've been keeping a close eye on what is selling and what isn't, not only with my own books but with other authors too and now I'm going to share my insight with you.As I said, I've only recently started selling my ebooks on Amazon as Kindle ebooks, and I have met with modest success which I've been quite pleased with. I know that I could have done much better, but I'm pleased with my sales so far because, apart from emailing my subscribers and listing my books on my website, I haven't marketed them at all. So when sales started to roll in I was pleased.I wanted to market them but I've been so busy with my other writing work that I didn't get time (my bad, as they say). But one thing I do know is that once I start publishing more ebooks and marketing them all over the internet, I KNOW that I can make high sales. Marketing is a big part of my publishing plan for the future.I've published one horror novel and several how-to ebooks about writing and publishing, and my horror novel is my best seller (on Kindle). But this isn't surprising because one thing that I have noticed from writers all over the internet is that when it comes to Kindle ebooks, fiction far outsells non-fiction.This is really great news for fiction authors because when the only way to self publish ebooks was by selling PDF ebooks, no one wanted to buy downloadable PDF novels.But Kindle has completely turned things around and now there are many millionaire self published fiction writers, all publishing their work as Kindle ebooks.The best thing about publishing for the Kindle is that it's so quick and easy to do. Converting a Word manuscript to an HTML file is one-click easy. And uploading to Kindle is also one-click easy. The whole Kindle publishing process from converting and uploading your ebook file to clicking 'publish' takes less than 5 minutes. And, if your manuscript is written in English, it will be published on the Amazon website in less than 12 hours.That means you can have your book published before you go bed tonight (if you're reading this in the morning) :).But what type of Kindle ebooks sell more copies? And how can you sell more?There are several different genres of fiction and depending on what genre you write can affect the number of ebooks you sWell-known mystery writer, Joe Konrath has sold over half a million ebooks on Kindle. He mainly writes mystery thrillers but also writes horror (under a pseudonym) and collections of short stories. To date he has published 9 novels, 6 novellas and 5 short story collections.Ann Voss, who used to write romance books for Harlequin, began writing and publishing her own ebooks for Kindle in 2012. Her first ebook sold over 11,000 copies and combined with earnings for book loans, it netted her over $24,000 in just 6 weeks. Her Kindle novel was a mystery thriller.But she did have a following of readers already and she did market her novel and used BookBub to do it.And according to BookBub, the most sought after fiction is mystery thrillers. They market exclusively to ebook readers via email and according to their website (at time of writing this article) their list of subscribers for each type of ebook is as follows:Mystery/Thriller - 360,000+Romance - 270,000+Historical Fiction - 190,000+Biographies/Mémoires - 160,000+Literary Fiction - 150,000+Fantasy - 140,000+Religious/Inspirational - 14,000+Women's Fiction - 140,000+Cooking - 130,000+Science Fiction - 120,000+Teen/Young Adult - 110,000+Action/Adventure - 110,000+Horror - 100,000+Advice/How To - 90,000+And this is just the numbers for one website.With just this one list alone, it's easy to see that mystery thrillers far out-sell any other type of ebook.But one other thing that also became obvious to me about writing and publishing ebooks, is that all the authors that have enjoyed phenomenal success with high sales of their ebooks, have also written many books. They don't just write one novel and sit back and expect to make a fortune.Instead they are prolific writers who not only love what they do, they are also good writers.So if you've ever dreamed of working from home as a self published fiction author, with Kindle publishing being so quick and easy to do, now (today) is the perfect time to start working towards your dream.And by this time next year, who knows how far you will have come.

Paid:Blinkist: Seems to be the one of the most popular choice of the paid book summary websites. It has one of the highest number of book summarized (1500+) and the summaries are about 2500 words. They offer a free daily summary. From $50/year.GetAbstract: Another popular option, it has a similar format as the above. It has ~400 books summarized (around 2500 words) many of which is several languages. It also provides audio version and an introduction about the author, and review of book (1–10) in terms of applicability, innovation and style.BookVideoClub: This one is semi-paid. You can find the videos of hand-sketched summaries on youtube, but the written summaries are paid. Book summaries are kept short (~4min.)MeaningfullHQ: A mix of blog / book summaries with a paid option to get access to more content.Philosopher’s Notes: With 100+ books reviewed it offers a good compromise between quantity and detail. All book summaries come in a 6 page pdf and an audio. The summaries don’t consist of per-chapter summary but more a registry and the author of the website’s personal opinion of important concepts and interesting excerpts.GetFlashNotes: About 150 books summarized. 30$/month.Readitfor.me: They have 150 books summarized including video summary and document with actionable steps to implement the concepts of the book. Topics of the books are Marketing, Sales, Leadership and Self improvement. 30$/month;Soundview: The focus is on business books but it has plenty of self-improvement books as well. Their summaries are very detailed with about 6000 words. The price is on the high end ranging from 100$/year to 200$/year but they provide other services like webinars and book reviews.Knowlla: 10 minute video book summaries. $27/month or 250$/year.Amazon: Here you can purchase individual book summaries written by several different people.BizSum: It has one of the highest number of books summarized (2500+) including to languages other than english. $10 per book summary, or $100/year.TheBusinessSource: It has text (2000–3500 words) video and audio (<5 min.) only book summaries. From $130/year (for 2 summaries/month) to $700/year.Summaries.com: Lengthy detailed and well designed summaries of about 6000 words with a focus on business books (total number of books is 900+). Price ranges from $12 for 4 book summaries to $500 for 1000 summaries.Free:For the free options there seems to be an inverse relationship between book summary quantity and detail. The more detailed and lengthy the book summaries the less summaries that website has.Here are the best ones I know of:Deconstructing Excellence: There’s 13 summaries of books, and the summaries are very detailed (~3000 words). The summary follows the structure of the book, each chapter is summarized.Sivers: The author has read a great a lot of books (I counted around 230) and on this website he provides some unorganized notes he took while reading them. So there’s basically some random phrases and bits he found interesting about each book.4MinuteBooks: With a similar objective of InQuasar but more compact/less detail. The author reads book summaries on Blinkist and writes a 4 minute text with the most useful insights from that summary. It’s the one with the most book summaries with 375 at the time of this post. However remember they are not summaries from reading the books but from reading summaries of them.Actionable Books: The free resource with the greatest number of books (1032 at the time of this post). Not as much summaries or notes, but mainly just a few important excerpts (they call gems) from books and an explanation of its importance.Youtube channels:I know you asked for websites, but I’ve watched book summaries by videos mainly on two youtube channels, which from what I’ve veen, are two of the best, and I enjoyed a lot. The channels are the Brian Johnson and FightMediocrity.Happy Learning :)

I’ve been through the process of self-publishing on Kindle and learnt a few things. Now, I can share my tips, so you don’t make the same mistakes!I’m a commercially published author now, but I understand the frustrations of trying to break into conventional publishing, because it took me ten years to get my big break. Before I got my publishing deal, I self-published a short story called Veronika, using Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) with modest success – it has been in the Amazon top 50. Self publishing does have the advantage of getting your work out there, which can lead to attracting attention and sales.Why Self Publish on Kindle?Amazon’s two main competitors, Apple and Barnes & Noble, both claim to have gained a 20+% market share of the eBook market, leaving Amazon with something like 60%. But surveys of self-published authors have shown that Amazon’s share of self-published eBook sales is much higher – more like 80-85%.Whether the true figure is 60% or as high as 85%, Amazon is the biggest market by a long way, and KDP makes the process of self publishing on Kindle relatively easy.Self publish on Kindle: Step 1 – Your BookFirst you’ll need to sign up for KDP.Then you start by clicking Add a Title. The important options to fill in are:Book nameDescription (up to 4,000 characters – use it to sell your book to the reader)Book contributors (you as the author)Categories (whichever genres you are writing in)Search keywords (up to 7, add the themes of the novel, don’t duplicate the categories)These other items can just be left blank/default: Subtitle, Series, Edition Number, Publisher, Language,Publication Date, ISBN.Verify Your Publishing RightsAs you are self-publishing your own work, and so you have copyright, select This is not a public domain work and I hold the necessary publishing rights.Convert your book to Kindle formatKDP accepts three main formats:Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)Ebook Formats (Html, Mobi, Epub)Adobe PDFIt is possible to send Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF documents direct to KDP, but the formatting is far from ideal if you do.If you want a really professional looking book then you should convert your book to Kindle’s HTML format yourself before uploading. I found the easiest solution was to convert the formatted manuscript into Kindle specific html. How to do this will be the subject of a separate answer.But, as we’re doing things the easy way for now, I suggest you just upload the manuscript and let Amazon reformat it for Kindle.Use Kindle PreviewerIf you have created an HTML format file then you can use Kindle Previewer, a downloadable Kindle emulator, to check how your book will look on various types of Kindle . What I found was that without careful tweaking, my book looked good on one type of Kindle but not on others. Kindle Previewer allows you to quickly switch between Kindle versions and see how the book will look on each type.Upload Your Book FileOnce you’re happy with the format, you can upload the file to KDP. The only option is Digital Rights Management. This is your choice. Choose Enable if you want to make it harder for people to copy your book, or Do Not Enable if you prefer to make your book available without restrictions.After you’ve uploaded, there’s an online previewer to check the text still looks right.Self publish on Kindle: Step 2 – Cover PhotoThere are two options, design your own cover or use the template-based Cover Creator. I recommend designing your own cover. The book cover is critical to attracting readers and a template based design is less likely to stand out from the crowd. The picture at the top shows what the cover I designed for Veronika looks like on the Kindle.Designing your own cover doesn’t have to be difficult. At the simplest, it’s just a question of finding a photo, making it the right size and adding the book’s title and your name to it.Find a Cover PhotoThere are two options: use an original photo or artwork of your own or download one from an image library. The cheapest and easiest option is to use your own photo.Make the Cover Photo the Right Size and Add the TitleYou’ll need some image editing software to make the cover the right size and to add the title and your name as the author. The free and easy to use image editing programs I recommend are iPiccy and Pixlr.Use the image editor to crop the photo so it is 1,563 x 2,500 pixels, as in the diagram below:The cover should also be in colour, despite the fact the most common Kindles only display black and white. This is because the Kindle Fire and the Kindle app on iPhone, Windows etc. can display colour.Both iPiccy and Pixlr have a variety of free to use fonts. Experiment with a few different ones until you find one you like.Upload the CoverThis is simply a matter of clicking Browse for Image… selecting the cover you’ve designed and then clicking Upload Image.Design a cover using the Cover CreatorAlternatively, if you just want a simple cover, use the Cover Creator.Step 3 – Rights and PricingVerify Your Publishing TerritoriesSelect Worldwide rights – all territories. Your book will then appear on all the different Amazon sites around the world.Choose Your RoyaltyI suggest you set your price so that you receive the 70% Royalty – which means a minimum of $2.99 / £1.49 after that it’s up to you.You can set prices worldwide automatically, based on the US price, or customise your prices for different territories. It might be worth setting prices manually to exploit psychological price points like £1.99.Self publish on Kindle: Final Step – Publish!Now just click Save and Publish.That’s it.
