Do the Girl Scouts of the USA have the same issues with scouts being abused while in their care as Scouts BSA?
I agree with Mark Leichty ‘s answer.A Google search for something like “girl scout leader charged with abuse” turns up a lot of advertisements for lawyers, a lot of articles that are actually about the Boy Scouts, and some hits inside the BSA Youth Protection policies and GSUSA’s similar policies, but I actually did find a few accused Girl Scout leaders:Albert Orjuela, in Westchester County, New York, sentenced in May 2019Steven C Faust, in Dane County, Wisconsin, charged in December 2018 (but found “not guilty” by a jury in March 2019)Audie Cooper, in Oregon, 2008. (Actually he wasn’t a “leader”, but his live-in girlfriend was, and he went with her to troop meetings when he was already a registered sex offender.)Ted Karnaczewski, in Cook County, Illinois, 1991.Keith Allen Tanner, in Roane County, West Virginia, 2018. (Apparently he claimed to police that he was a Girl Scout leader. GSUSA denied any affiliation with him, but admitted that his wife was a registered leader.)When my daughter was a Daisy, one of her troop’s activities was a pool party. My wife reported that some of the mothers brought wine to the event and consumed it. I guess you can draw a line between that and actually giving whiskey to 16-year-old boys (which is actually one of the allegations in at least one of the Ineligible Volunteer Files), but it didn’t improve my perception of the Girl Scouts that, apparently, no one else saw anything wrong with it.
Was the 41 mag more powerful than the 44 mag and not as many produced?
Before I go into comparisons, let’s have a little history. The .44 Magnum was an outgrowth of the earlier .44 Special, which was introduced in 1907 by Smith & Wesson.Just as the .357 Magnum was a longer, more powerful version of the .38 Special, the same thing was applied to the .44 Special. An Idahoan big game hunter, guide and gun writer named Elmer Keith was a longtime proponent of large, powerful revolvers capable of taking large game at very long ranges. Keith began experimenting with heavy handloads in the .44 Special using heavy-framed Colt New Service, and especially Smith & Wesson revolvers, particularly Smith’s big Triple Lock.Keith’s work began catching on in popularity, and despite heavy lobbying on the part of Keith and the rest of the gun press, gun and ammo manufacturers seemingly resisted the push toward developing a .44 Magnum until 1955, when Smith & Wesson, in cooperation with Remington, developed both gun and cartridge.Interestingly, a Ruger representative, while on a business trip to Remington’s production plant in mid-1955, found some empty cases lying around which bore an interesting head stamp reading “44 Rem Mag”. The Ruger rep supposedly pocketed a few of those cases and took them back to Connecticut to show to Bill Ruger. The Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum, later renamed the Model 29 in 1957, took the gun world by storm. And Ruger upset S&W’s apple cart to a great extent by introducing their own .44 Magnum in January, 1956, right on the heels of the big N-frame Smith. Ruger’s gun was their Blackhawk single action revolver. And the Ruger was considerably cheaper to manufacture and sell than Smith & Wesson’s deluxe double action revolver. In the meantime, a few intrepid law enforcement officers had grown disillusioned with the effectiveness of the .357 Magnum revolver, but they were soon to discover that the .44 Magnum was simply too much gun for law enforcement. The same Elmer Keith who had lobbied so hard for the .44 Magnum, began petitioning gun makers and the ammo folks to come up with a magnum cartridge that would be a perfect compromise between the .357 and .44 Magnum cartridges. In 1964, Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 57, a deluxe double action with target hammers, triggers and beautiful grips, and the Model 58, a fixed-sighted plain vanilla version of the K-frame, both in the brand-spanking new .41 Magnum. The cartridge was completely new. There had never been a “.41 Special.” In fact, the only cartridge in American history that fell between the .35 and .44 calibers was the old black powder cartridge .38–40 Win. Despite what many people think, that cartridge wasn’t a .38 caliber, it was a .40 caliber. After an initial surge in sales to law enforcement agencies across the country, it was soon discovered that the .41 Magnum was too much gun for cops as well. Instead of being the “perfect compromise” between the two previous magnum rounds, it was definitely closer to the .44 in every respect. (And the .41 was a true “.41,” measuring 0.410″.) There were two distinct factory loads for the .41: a 210 gr. JHP, intended for the handgun hunter, and loaded to 1,400 fps, and a heavier, 220 gr. lead semi-wadcutter, loaded to 1,150 fps, and meant for police use. But the “lighter” police load was still too much, especially for cops who weren’t great big guys with large hands.Ruger followed Smith again in a matter of weeks in getting its own .41 Magnum to market, and it, too, was in the big Blackhawk single action, and it outsold Smith’s offerings by a wide margin, just as they had with the .44 Magnum. However, sales for the .41 Magnum overall never took off. It was a complete failure in the law enforcement market. And hunters didn’t take to it, either. They had the .44 Magnum, and among American handgunners, bigger has always been better. The .41 Magnum was always produced in smaller numbers simply because demand for it was never as great as that for the slightly larger .44 caliber. It has languished for decades, but in recent years, it’s seen a mild resurgence as many handgunners are discovering what a really great cartridge the .41 really is.The .44 Magnum was more powerful than the .41, at least on paper. And not by much.As far as actual effectiveness, especially as a hunting round, and for use at long range, there are instances in which they were equals, and some in which the .41 actually outperformed its big brother.I know this is going to bring a crap storm down on me by all the .44 Maggie fans, but I’ve had extensive experience with both rounds for more than forty years, and I know what each cartridge is capable of..44 Magnum bullets are only 0.019″ larger than .41 caliber bullets, and that added diameter dictates that the .44 will fire heavier bullets, all things being equal. But given similar loadings in which ballistic coefficients are nearly identical, the .41 Magnum will deliver a flatter trajectory over distance, and that flatter trajectory translates into the .41 caliber bullet retaining velocity a little better than the .44. This makes shooting the .41 Magnum accurately over long distances and easier chore. This difference can be amplified with careful handloading because the .41 is capable of launching its bullets at higher velocities than those from a .44, while maintaining safe breech pressures.A case in point is with a pair of custom loads I have for each round in which the .41 Magnum uses a 170 gr. JHP, and the .44 is loaded with the closest identical bullet, a 180 gr. JHP.The .41 Magnum was fired from a 6–1/2″ Smith & Wesson Model 57.The .44 Magnum load was fired from a 6–1/2″ Smith & Wesson Model 29.Identical guns, except the Model 29 weighs a hair less due to a tad bit less metal to accommodate the minuscule size difference between the two rounds. My particular recipes both use CCI-350 Large Pistol Magnum primers, and 2400 powder. At what I consider as my personal maximum loads (which isn’t what my manuals list as maximum), the .41 loading delivers an average of 260 fps more than the .44 Magnum load. The .44’s additional 10 grains of bullet weight and superior sectional density doesn’t overcome the velocity advantage the .41 Magnum delivers.A sizable number of silhouette shooters from the 1980s discovered this difference, and the .41 Magnum enjoyed a brief resurgence in popularity while that particular sport was at the height of its popularity. All kinds of arguments can be made about kinetic energy, momentum and all kinds of other clap-trap to try to prove the .44 Magnum is undeniably superior, but it just isn’t so.Yeah, I’ll admit to the fact that I’ve been a .41 Magnum “fan boy” since I was a sophomore in high school in 1974. But it isn’t like I’m a party pooper over the .44. I like the .41 better because it gets the same jobs done the .44 will, all the while producing far less noise and muzzle blast, and it doesn’t buck quite as hard, either.
